LAST WEEK
LAST WEEK
We looked at the humanity of Paul the Apostle
We saw him struggle with the things that he was supposed to do
We saw him explain to us, that he sometimes gave in to the works of the flesh
At the end of Chapter 7 we saw his frustration with his sinfulness
He said
24 O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?
The answer is JESUS
Jesus, the one the Holy Spirit points us to
Jesus, the one who was tempted in all things and yet without sin
Jesus, the one who conquered the grave.
THIS WEEK WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE THAT THOUGHT WITH THE REALITY THAT FORGIVENESS NOT ONLY CAME AT A COST, BUT IT MOVES US TO A RESPONSE
Though Jesus presents himself as the ultimate solution for our sinfulness
What type of participation is God desiring of us who are in Christ?
If you have ever wrestled with a specific sin, continually
If you have yet to experience complete freedom from this particular sin
What does the Bible present as a starting point?
What is one practical thing we can do to begin the sanctification process?
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
PRAY
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.
PAUL GOES FROM EXPRESSING HOW FRUSTRATED HE IS WITH HIS SIN
TO GIVING US THE SOLUTION TO HIS FRUSTRATION
For those of us who are sinful
For those of us who mess up
For those of us who are in Christ
WE HAVE TO KNOW . . .
WE HAVE TO FALL BACK ON THE TRUTH FOUND IN
THERE IS NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE WHO ARE IN CHRIST JESUS
What does this mean?
For the Christian there is no source of condemnation that speaks with more authority than the blood of Christ
For the Christian, there is nothing that can nullify what Christ has done on the cross.
For their to be no condemnation, means that your sin, past, present, and future has been dealt with
There is now no penalty for your sin
There is no fee to pay
There is no consequence
There is no punishment on that side of death
However on this side of the Eternity, there might be some consequences
You may have to pay a fine
You may have to humble yourself
You may have to work
But not for God’s approval
But maybe for your good standing with people
This is where it gets messy
For Example:
You mess up
You sin against somebody
You ask for forgiveness
You make things right
They “Forgive You”
But they don’t want to have anything to do with you
You’ve lost their friendship
You might have to change churches
Even though both parties are still loved by God
Sin brings change
I’ll let you into a little secret
You will know that you have truly forgiven someone, when nothing changes.
When you can trust that person again
You know you have forgiven them
When that person doesn’t take advantage of you
You know you can trust them again
But with humans, this is very hard to accomplish
But with God, it is a whole different story
IT IS SO FREEING TO KNOW THAT THERE IS NO CONDEMNATION FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE IN CHRIST
SUCH FREEDOM IN THIS TRUTH
SUCH JOY TO KNOW THAT WE HAVE BEEN ETERNALLY FORGIVEN BECAUSE OF WHAT CHRIST DID ON THE CROSS.
THIS TRUTH SHOULD MOVE US
SIN BRINGS CHANGE, BUT DO DOES FORGIVENESS
IN FACT, PAUL PAINTS THE PICTURE FOR US . . .
There is a caveat . . .
A CAVEAT FOUND ONLY IN THE KJV AND NKJV
Something that the new manuscripts have left out
Something that is reiterated in verse 4
Paul continues that powerful sentence
There isn’t condemnation for those who belong to Jesus, Who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit
There isn’t condemnation for those who belong to Jesus, Who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit
I could see why some newer manuscripts exempt that last part
But I also believe it provides a way for us to avoid abusing grace
Yes, there isn’t condemnation for those who belong to Jesus
But that brings a responsibility for us
That freedom should cause us to do something
To walk according to the Spirit, and not according to the flesh
To be filled with the Holy Spirit
To be immersed with the power of the Holy Spirit
Walking according to His leading
That the flesh would be depleted of its power
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
I LOVE WHAT ENCOURAGES US WITH
1 Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.
IF WE ARE HAVING CONTINUAL ISSUES WITH SIN, WE MUST ASK GOD FOR POWER FROM ON HIGH
We must look to the mountains and know where our help comes from
THAT WHEN GOD ANSWERS
WHEN HE SENDS THE HOLY SPIRIT
THIS POWER WOULD ENABLE US TO CHANGE OUR BEHAVIORS
The problem isn’t ability, its mindset
Think about it for a second
Jesus could do whatever He wanted to do
Jesus was God in the flesh
Jesus could do whatever He wanted to do
Except Sin.
The Bible tells us that He was tempted in all things and yet without sin
That means that Christ had to tap into His eternal calling in order to overcome the temporal temptations.
Every time He was tempted
He had to think about the price He would pay on the cross
He had to think about the joy of seeing us with Him, ruling and reigning
He had to balance the temptation with the plans for Salvation that He and His father agreed on
Every time He was tempted
He had to starve the flesh, and tap into the Spiritual Equity of His Calling
This is the mindset that needs to overrule every temptation that surfaces
This is the mindset that we need to have on a day to day basis
The temporal satisfaction that is common for the old man to entertain
Must be done away with
Now that we are a new creation
Created for good works that we should walk in them.
We have a power source to tap into that will aide us in time of need
CHURCH, THE BEST RESPONSE TO THE FREEDOM WE HAVE IN CHRIST, IS TO WALK IN THE SPIRIT.
To explore what it means to walk in the Spirit.
To find out the awesome work that the Holy Spirit wants to lead us in
To not only be curious, but active in what Christ wants to do in our lives
IN ORDER FOR US TO DO SO, WE MUST BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT
WE MUST WALK IN THE SPIRIT
FOR IN DOING SO, THE FLESH WILL WILL BE DEPLETED OF ITS POWER.
IT’S A SWITCH OF ENERGY SOURCE
IT IS A DIFFERENT LAW
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
ROMANS 8:2-
WALKING IN THE SPIRIT HAS SO MANY BENEFITS
It brings the every day to life
It causes us to be freed from the requirements of the law
The requirement to offer up sacrifices of atonement
The requirement to pay for our sin
INSTEAD,
It frees us from something that has crippled our society, PERFORMANCE
For those of us who belong to Christ, there is no need to perform
There is no need to show off
There is no need to be gimmicky
We can just be who Christ has called us to be.
JESUS IS SATISFIED IN WHO WE ARE IN HIM
Performance is a reversal of what Jesus wants to accomplish.
Performance says I’m not enough in Christ, so I have to perform
Performance tells us that we are still under the bondage of the law.
PAUL IS GIVING US A BETTER OPTION
PAUL IS FREEING US FROM WHAT ONCE ENSLAVED US
NOW YOU MAY BE THINKING, ISN’T “WALKING IN THE SPIRIT” A FORM OF PERFORMANCE?
Honestly, I don’t think so
It is what the Christian is called to
It is the foundation of who we are
It is not something that we should strive to do, it is something that should come natural to us.
It is the best reaction to the Gospel
3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh,
3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
PAUL IS BRINGING TO LIGHT A REALITY THAT WILL FREE THE JEWS FROM THE MASTER OF PERFORMANCE
HE SAYS:
You’ve been trying so hard to gain approval
You’ve been trying to justify the flesh with the works of the Law
But the law was weak through the flesh
The law could not do what God did by sending His own Son
WHAT JESUS DID ON THE CROSS WAS NOT ONLY PAY FOR OUR SINS
BUT CONDEMNED SIN TO DEATH
IT PUT SIN IN ITS GRAVE
IT GAVE SIN SOME OF ITS OWN MEDICINE
IT RENDERED SIN POWERLESS
BRINGING AN END TO ITS UNDISPUTED STREAK
FOR WHAT REASON?
THAT THE RIGHTEOUSNESS THAT THE LAW REQUIRES
MIGHT BE FULFILLED IN US
WHO DO NOT WALK ACCORDING TO THE FLESH BUT ACCORDING TO THE SPIRIT
It all comes down to the Power of the Holy Spirit
This is the variable that changes everything
IT’S A MINDSET
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:5-
9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
