THE PURPOSE:

 

Rom 15:6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 

1Cor.10:31 So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God  RVR Si, pues, coméis o bebéis, o hacéis otra cosa, hacedlo todo para la gloria de Dios. John 1:14  The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

2:11 This, the first of his miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in him.

17:1 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven & prayed: Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began. 10 All I have is yours, and all you have is mine. And glory has come to me through them.  22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one 24 Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am & to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world

Num 14:21.. as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the Lord fills the whole earth

1 Chron 29:11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, O Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all. 

Ps 57:5,11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens; let your glory be over all the earth. 

Ps 72:19 Praise be to his glorious name forever; may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

Ps 108:5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth. 

Isa 6:3 And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”

THE COMMAND: make disciples

 

Matthew 28:18-20 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” RVR - Y Jesús se acercó y les habló diciendo: Toda potestad me es dada en el cielo y en la tierra.  19 Por tanto, id, y haced discípulos a todas las naciones, bautizándolos en el nombre del Padre, y del Hijo, y del Espíritu Santo; 20 enseñándoles que guarden todas las cosas que os he mandado; y he aquí yo estoy con vosotros todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo. John 4:1 Therefore when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John  2 (although Jesus Himself was not baptizing, but His disciples were) RVR - Cuando, pues, el Señor entendió que los fariseos habían oído decir: Jesús hace y bautiza más discípulos que Juan. What is a “Disciple”:

Mathēté̄s means more in the NT than a mere “learner or pupil”.

An adherent who accepts the instruction given to him and makes it his rule of conduct

 

Acts 11:26  and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called

Christians first at Antioch.

Lk 6:13 [genuine & false disciples] And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:  (RVR) Y cuando era de día, llamó a sus discípulos, y escogió a doce de ellos, a los cuales también llamó apóstoles: (VP)  Cuando se hizo de día, llamó a sus discípulos, y escogió a doce de ellos, a quienes llamó apóstoles

Acts 9:26 When he came to Jerusalem, he was trying to associate with the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple.

Other Terminology for a “disciple”:

 

Ephesians 4:12-13 to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. We are commanded to make Disciples ….….that strive to be like their Master

Matthew 10:24-25 “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a slave above his master. 25 “It is enough for the disciple that he become like his teacher, and the slave like his master. If they have called the head of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign the members of his household! (RVR) El discípulo no es más que su maestro, ni el siervo más que su señor. 25 Bástale al discípulo ser como su maestro, y al siervo como su señor. Si al padre de familia llamaron Beelzebú, ¿cuánto más a los de su casa? (VP) “Ningún discípulo es más que su maestro, y ningún criado es más que su amo. 25 El discípulo debe conformarse con llegar a ser como su maestro, y el criado como su amo. We are commanded to make Disciples……… that deny themselves and carry their cross daily

Luke 9:23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. (RVR) Y decía a todos: Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz cada día, y sígame.  (VP) Después les dijo a todos: —Si alguno quiere ser discípulo mío, olvídese de sí mismo, cargue con su cruz cada día y sígame.

Luke 14:27 And anyone who does not carry his [own - NASB] cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.  (RVR) Y el que no lleva su cruz y viene en pos de mí, no puede ser mi discípulo.  (VP) Y el que no toma su propia cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo.

We are commanded to make Disciples ……..that love Jesus more than their family or own life

Luke 14:26  “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. (RVR) Si alguno viene a mí, y no aborrece a su padre, y madre, y mujer, e hijos, y hermanos, y hermanas, y aun también su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo. (VP) Y el que no toma su propia cruz y me sigue, no puede ser mi discípulo.

We are commanded to make Disciples  ………that surrenders all possessions to Jesus

Luke 14:33 “So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions. (RVR) Así, pues, cualquiera de vosotros que no renuncia a todo lo que posee, no puede ser mi discípulo. (VP) Así pues, cualquiera de ustedes que no deje todo lo que tiene, no puede ser mi discípulo

We are commanded to make Disciples ………... that continue in His Word

John 8:31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. We are commanded to make Disciples …..…. that bear much fruit

John 15:8  This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. Increase of:

Acts 6:1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.   

Acts 6:7 The word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith

Acts 14:21 After they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch,   

Strengthening of:

Acts 14:22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.”   

Acts 18:23 And having spent some time there, he left and passed successively through the Galatian region and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

Matt 26:1 When Jesus had finished all these words, He said to His disciples,  G3101

Matt 26:8 But the disciples were indignant when they saw this, and said, “Why this waste? 

Matt 26:17 Now on the first day of Unleavened Bread the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Where do You want us to prepare for You to eat the Passover?”  G3101

Matt 26:18 And He said, “Go into the city to a certain man, and say to him, ‘The Teacher says, “My time is near; I am to keep the Passover at your house with My disciples.” ’ ” 

Matt 26:19 The disciples did as Jesus had directed them; and they prepared the Passover.  G3101

Matt 26:20 Now when evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve disciples. 

Matt 26:26 While they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.”  G3101

Matt 26:35 Peter *said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.  G3101

Matt 26:36 Then Jesus *came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and *said to His disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.”  G3101

Matt 26:40 And He *came to the disciples and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “So, you men could not keep watch with Me for one hour?  G3101

Matt 26:45 Then He *came to the disciples and *said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Behold, the hour is at hand and the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners.  G3101

Matt 26:56 “But all this has taken place to fulfill the Scriptures of the prophets.” Then all the disciples left Him and fled.  G3101

Matt 27:57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who himself had also become a disciple of Jesus.  G3100

Matt 27:64 “Therefore, give orders for the grave to be made secure until the third day, otherwise His disciples may come and steal Him away and say to the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last deception will be worse than the first.”  G3101

Matt 28:7 “Go quickly and tell His disciples that He has risen from the dead; and behold, He is going ahead of you into Galilee, there you will see Him; behold, I have told you.”  G3101

Matt 28:8 And they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy and ran to report it to His disciples.  G3101

Matt 28:13 and said, “You are to say, ‘His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’  G3101

Matt 28:16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated.  G3101

Matt 28:19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,  G3100

Mark 2:15 And it *happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.  G3101

Mark 2:16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?”  G3101

Mark 2:18 John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and they *came and *said to Him, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” 

Mark 2:23 And it happened that He was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain.  G3101

Mark 3:7 Jesus withdrew to the sea with His disciples; and a great multitude from Galilee followed; and also from Judea,  G3101

Mark 3:9 And He told His disciples that a boat should stand ready for Him because of the crowd, so that they would not crowd Him;  G3101

Mark 6:45 Immediately Jesus made His disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side to Bethsaida, while He Himself was sending the crowd away.  G3101

Mark 7:2 and had seen that some of His disciples were eating their bread with impure hands, that is, unwashed.  G3101

Mark 7:5 The Pharisees and the scribes *asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?”  G3101

Mark 7:17 When he had left the crowd and entered the house, His disciples questioned Him about the parable.  G3101

Mark 8:1 In those days, when there was again a large crowd and they had nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples and *said to them,  G3101

Mark 8:4 And His disciples answered Him, “Where will anyone be able to find enough bread here in this desolate place to satisfy these people?” 

Mark 8:6 And He *directed the people to sit down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks and broke them, and started giving them to His disciples to serve to them, and they served them to the people.  G3101

Mark 8:10 And immediately He entered the boat with His disciples and came to the district of Dalmanutha.  G3101

Mark 8:27 Jesus went out, along with His disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way He questioned His disciples, saying to them, “Who do people say that I am?”  G3101

Mark 8:33 But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and *said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”  G3101

Mark 8:34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.  G3101

Mark 9:14 When they came back to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them, and some scribes arguing with them.  G3101

Mark 9:18 and whenever it seizes him, it slams him to the ground and he foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth and stiffens out. I told Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not do it.”

Mark 9:28 When He came into the house, His disciples began questioning Him privately, “Why could we not drive it out?”  G3101

Mark 9:31 For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.”  G3101

Mark 10:10 In the house the disciples began questioning Him about this again.  G3101

Mark 10:13 And they were bringing children to Him so that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked them.  G3101

Mark 10:23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, “How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!”  G3101

Mark 10:24 The disciples were amazed at His words. But Jesus *answered again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God!  G3101

Mark 10:46 Then they *came to Jericho. And as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. 

Mark 11:1 As they *approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He *sent two of His disciples,  G3101

Mark 11:14 He said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again!” And His disciples were listening.  G3101

Mark 12:43 Calling His disciples to Him, He said to them, “Truly I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the contributors to the treasury;  G3101

Mark 13:1 As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples *said to Him, “Teacher, behold what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!”  G3101

Luke 10:23 Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see,  G3101

Luke 11:1 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”  G3101, G3101

Luke 12:1 Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together that they were stepping on one another, He began saying to His disciples first of all, “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.  G3101

Luke 12:22 And He said to His disciples, “For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on.  G3101

Luke 14:26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.  G3101

Luke 14:27 “Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.  G3101

Luke 14:33 “So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.  G3101

Luke 16:1 Now He was also saying to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and this manager was reported to him as squandering his possessions.  G3101

Luke 17:1 He said to His disciples, “It is inevitable that stumbling blocks come, but woe to him through whom they come!  G3101

Luke 17:22 And He said to the disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, and you will not see it.  G3101

Luke 18:15 And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them.  G3101

Luke 18:34 But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.  –

Luke 19:29 When He approached Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount that is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,  G3101

Luke 19:37 As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen,  G3101

John 4:27 At this point His disciples came, and they were amazed that He had been speaking with a woman, yet no one said, “What do You seek?” or, “Why do You speak with her?”  G3101

John 4:33 So the disciples were saying to one another, “No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?”  G3101

John 6:22 The next day the crowd that stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was no other small boat there, except one, and that Jesus had not entered with His disciples into the boat, but that His disciples had gone away alone.  G3101, G3101

John 18:16 but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the doorkeeper, and brought Peter in.  G3101

John 18:17 Then the slave-girl who kept the door *said to Peter, “You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?” He *said, “I am not.”  G3101

John 18:19 The high priest then questioned Jesus about His disciples, and about His teaching.

John 18:25 Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You are not also one of His disciples, are you?” He denied it, and said, “I am not.”  G3101

John 19:26 When Jesus then saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing nearby, He *said to His mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”  G3101

John 19:27 Then He *said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” From that hour the disciple took her into his own household.  G3101, G3101

John 19:38 After these things Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate granted permission. So he came and took away His body.  G3101

John 20:2 So she *ran and *came to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and *said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him.”  G3101

John 20:4 The two were running together; and the other disciple ran ahead faster than Peter and came to the tomb first;  G3101

John 20:8 So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb then also entered, and he saw and believed.  G3101

John 20:10 So the disciples went away again to their own homes.  G3101

John 20:18 Mary Magdalene *came, announcing to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord,” and that He had said these things to her.  G3101

John 20:19 So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and when the doors were shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be with you.”  G3101

John 20:20 And when He had said this, He showed them both His hands and His side. The disciples then rejoiced when they saw the Lord.  G3101

John 20:25 So the other disciples were saying to him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe.”  G3101

John 20:26 After eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus *came, the doors having been shut, and stood in their midst and said, “Peace be with you.”  G3101

John 20:30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book;  G3101

John 21:1 After these things Jesus manifested Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and He manifested Himself in this way.  G3101

John 21:2 Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together.  G3101

John 21:4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.  G3101

John 21:7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved *said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.  G3101

John 21:8 But the other disciples came in the little boat, for they were not far from the land, but about one hundred yards away, dragging the net full of fish.  G3101

John 21:12 Jesus *said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” None of the disciples ventured to question Him, “Who are You?” knowing that it was the Lord.  G3101

John 21:14 This is now the third time that Jesus was manifested to the disciples, after He was raised from the dead.  G3101

John 21:20 Peter, turning around, *saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?”  G3101

John 21:23 Therefore this saying went out among the brethren that that disciple would not die; yet Jesus did not say to him that he would not die, but only, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you?”  G3101

John 21:24 This is the disciple who is testifying to these things and wrote these things, and we know that his testimony is true.  G3101

 

Acts 6:1 Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food.  G3101

Acts 6:2 So the twelve summoned the congregation of the disciples and said, “It is not desirable for us to neglect the word of God in order to serve tables.  G3101

Acts 6:7 The word of God kept on spreading; and the number of the disciples continued to increase greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were becoming obedient to the faith.  G3101

Acts 9:1 Now Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest,  G3101

Acts 9:10 Now there was a disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.”  G3101

Acts 9:19 and he took food and was strengthened. Now for several days he was with the disciples who were at Damascus,  G3101

Acts 9:25 but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket.  G3101

Acts 9:36 Now in Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which translated in Greek is called Dorcas); this woman was abounding with deeds of kindness and charity which she continually did.  G3102

Acts 9:38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, having heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him, imploring him, “Do not delay in coming to us.”  G3101

3100. μαθητεύω mathēteúō; fut. mathēteúsō, from mathēté̄s (3101), disciple. As governing a dat., to be a disciple or follower of another’s doctrine (Matt. 27:57); governing an acc., to make a disciple (Matt. 28:19; Acts 14:21); to instruct (Matt. 13:52) with the purpose of making a disciple. Mathēteúō must be distinguished from the verb mathéō (n.f.) or manthánō (3129) which simply mean to learn without any attachment to the teacher who teaches. Mathēteúō means not only to learn, but to become attached to one’s teacher and to become his follower in doctrine and conduct of life. It is really not sufficient to translate this verb as “learn” but as “making a disciple,” in the NT sense of mathēté̄s.  Syn.: katēchéō (2727), to teach orally, instruct, catechize; didáskō (1321), to give instruction, teach; paideúō (3811), to instruct and train; heterodidaskaléō (2085), to teach a different doctrine; muéō (3453), to learn.

3101. μαθητής mathēté̄s; gen. mathētoú, masc. noun from manthánō (3129), to learn, to understand. A learner, pupil. (I) Mathēté̄s means more in the NT than a mere pupil or learner. It is an adherent who accepts the instruction given to him and makes it his rule of conduct, e.g., the disciples of John (Matt. 11:2; Mark 2:18; Luke 5:33; 7:18; John 3:25); the disciples of the Pharisees (Mark 2:18). In John 9:28, the Pharisees told the healed blind man, “Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses’ disciples.” Jesus had disciples in the sense that they believed and made His teaching the basis of their conduct. (Matt. 5:1; 9:19; 14:22; Luke 14:26, 27, 33; John 9:27; 15:8).  (II) Besides these believers, however, there was a smaller select group of twelve apostles whom Jesus chose out of the general group of His followers (Matt. 8:21; Luke 6:13, 17; 7:11; John 6:60, 66). They were to teach and exercise power in performing miracles in substantiation of His authority transferred to them. Thus, “the twelve” are so designated in Matt. 26:14 and called “the eleven” after Judas betrayed Jesus (Mark 16:14). These were not ordinary disciples, but those who remained with Him and followed Him (Matt. 5:1; 8:23, 25 [TR]; 9:10; 11:1; 14:22). (III) The general designation of mathēté̄s was given to those who believed on Christ (John 8:31). They were disciples but not the disciples (Matt. 10:42; John 8:31; Acts 6:2; 19:9). The name mathētaí (pl. of mathēté̄s) was applied to John’s disciples at Ephesus due to the relationship of John the Baptist to the Messiah (Acts 19:1). These disciples were ignorant of the fact that Jesus was the Messiah (Acts 19:4). Generally speaking, however, the term mathētaí, disciples, denoted just the followers of Christ, the Messiah. DISCIPLE

A. Nouns.

1. MATHĒTĒS (μαθητής , (3101)), lit., a learner (from manthanō, to learn, from a root math—, indicating thought accompanied by endeavour), in contrast to didaskalos, a teacher; hence it denotes one who follows one’s teaching, as the disciples of John, Matt. 9:14; of the Pharisees, Matt. 22:16; of Moses, John 9:28; it is used of the disciples of Jesus (a) in a wide sense, of Jews who became His adherents, John 6:66; Luke 6:17, some being secretly so, John 19:38; (b) especially of the twelve Apostles, Matt. 10:1; Luke 22:11, e.g.; (c) of all who manifest that they are His disciples by abiding in His Word, John 8:31; cp. 13:35; 15:8; (d) in the Acts, of those who believed upon Him and confessed Him, 6:1, 2, 7; 14:20, 22, 28; 15:10; 19:1. MATHĒTEUŌ (μαθητεύω , (3100)) is used in the Active Voice, intransitively, in some mss., in Matt. 27:57, in the sense of being the disciple of a person; here, however, the best mss. have the Passive Voice, lit., ‘had been made a disciple,’ as in Matt. 13:52,  “who hath been made a disciple.” It is used in this transitive sense in the Active Voice in 28:19 and Acts 14:21.

BKC - 28:16-20. Matthew did not record the meeting of Jesus with the 10 disciples later that same day (John 20:19-23) or the appearance 8 days later to the 11 disciples (John 20:24-29). But he did record an appearance occurring some time later in Galilee, where He promised He would meet them (Matt. 26:32; 28:7, 10) at a mountain. Which mountain He specified is unknown. When Jesus appeared they worshiped Him, but some doubted. Since Jesus had appeared to them earlier and verified Himself to them, they were not doubting the Resurrection. There was probably simply a brief question among some of them as to whether this was truly Jesus appearing to them. There was no indication that any miraculous element was involved in His being there and since unusual circumstances had occurred with previous visits, perhaps they wondered. Their doubts were quickly dispelled, for Jesus spoke to them claiming all authority in heaven and on earth. This authority (exousia, “official right or power”) had been given to Jesus by the Father and now He was instructing the disciples to go on the basis of that authority. Their field was to include all nations, not just Israel (10:5-6). They were to make disciples by proclaiming the truth concerning Jesus. Their hearers were to be evangelized and enlisted as Jesus’ followers. Those who believed were to be baptized in water in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Such an act would associate a believer with the person of Jesus Christ and with the Triune God. The God whom they served is one God and yet is three Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Those who respond are also to be taught the truths Jesus had specifically communicated to the Eleven. Not all that Jesus taught the disciples was communicated by them but they did teach specific truths for the new Church Age as they went abroad. Jesus’ commission, applicable to all His followers, involved one command, “Make disciples,” which is accompanied by three participles in the Greek: “going,” baptizing, and teaching.  The final words of the Lord recorded by Matthew were a promise that He would be with them always until the very end of the Age. Though the Lord did not remain physically with the Eleven, His spiritual presence was with them until their tasks on earth were finished. These final words of the Lord were carried out by the apostles as they went everywhere, proclaiming the story of their Messiah, Jesus Christ, the King of the Jews.

JM - 28:19 therefore. I.e., on the basis of His authority, the disciples were sent to “make disciples of all nations.” The sweeping scope of their commission is consummate with His unlimited authority. in the name of the Father … Son and … Holy Spirit. The formula is a strong affirmation of trinitarianism. 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you. The kind of evangelism called for in this commission does not end with the conversion of the unbeliever. I am with you. There’s a touching echo of the beginning of Matthew’s gospel here. Immanuel (1:23) “which is translated, ‘God with us’”—remains “with” us “even to the end of the age”—i.e., until He returns bodily to judge the world and establish His earthly kingdom.

Nelson - Therefore shows that the Great Commission rests on the authority of Christ. Because He has authority over all, everyone needs to hear His gospel. While vv. 18–20 are commonly known as the Great Commission, they should not be thought of as the first call for world evangelism. See Gen. 12:1–3 for God’s command that Abraham and his descendants should be a blessing to all nations. make disciples: Making disciples involves three steps: going, baptizing, and teaching. It was assumed that when a person trusted in the Lord Jesus, he or she would be baptized. The word name is singular, although it is the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together. This verse is another indication that God is one in three Persons. I am with you always demonstrates that Jesus is the true Immanuel, “God with us” (1:23; Heb. 13:5, 6; Rev. 21:3)

Open - 28:19 Sharing Our Faith: Why?—There are at least six compelling reasons for sharing our faith in Christ with those who have not experienced new life in Christ.

     a.     Because God has commanded us to do so. The final words of Jesus while on earth (Acts 1:8) and also the Bible (Rev. 22:17) speak concerning this.

     b.     Because it demonstrates our love for God. Christ said that if we truly loved Him we would keep His commandments (John 14:15).

     c.     Because all are lost (Rom. 3:10, 23).

     d.     Because our sharing is God’s chosen method to tell all people. He could have used angels, but He didn’t. Only redeemed sinners can tell lost sinners about Christ. Rom. 10:14–17; Acts 8:3.

     e.     Because God desires to save all people (Acts 4:12; 2 Pet. 3:9; 1 Tim. 2:4).

     f.     Because someone once shared his faith with us. It may have been a faithful Bible teacher, or a godly pastor, or a praying parent. In other words, they have the right to expect that we will do for others what they have done for us.

Baker - 19, 20a. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in(to) the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. We might say that this passage is of such fundamental significance that something should be said about each word or combination of words.

WIERSBE - They Shared the Good News with Others (Matt. 28:16–20) Some Bible scholars equate this “mountain meeting” in Galilee with the appearance of the Lord to “more than 500 brethren at one time” (1 Cor. 15:6). The fact that some of the people present doubted His resurrection would suggest that more than the eleven Apostles were present, for these men were now confirmed believers. Our Lord’s ascension did not take place at this time, but later, after He had ministered to His disciples in Jerusalem (Luke 24:44–53).  Matthew 28:18–20 is usually called “the Great Commission,” though this statement is no greater than that in any of the other Gospels, nor is it the last statement Jesus made before He returned to heaven. However, this declaration does apply to us as believers, so we should understand the factors that are involved. An authority (v. 18). In this verse, the word power means “authority,” the right to use power. The entire Gospel of Matthew stresses the authority of Jesus Christ. There was authority to His teaching (Matt. 7:29). He exercised authority in healing (Matt. 8:1–13), and even in forgiving sins (Matt. 9:6). He had authority over Satan, and He delegated that authority to His Apostles (Matt. 10:1). At the close of his Gospel, Matthew made it clear that Jesus has ALL authority. Since Jesus Christ today has all authority, we may obey Him without fear. No matter where He leads us, no matter what circumstances we face, He is in control. By His death and resurrection, Jesus defeated all enemies and won for Himself all authority. Christianity is a missionary faith. The very nature of God demands this, for God is love and God is not willing that any should perish (2 Peter 3:9). Our Lord’s death on the cross was for the whole world. If we are the children of God and share His nature, then we will want to tell the good news to the lost world. When we read the Book of Acts, we see that the early church operated on the basis of the Lord’s sovereign authority. They ministered in His name. They depended on His power and guidance. They did not face a lost world on the basis of their own authority, but on the authority of Jesus Christ. An activity (vv. 19–20a). The Greek verb translated go is actually not a command but a present participle (going). The only command in the entire Great Commission is “make disciples” (“teach all nations”). Jesus said, “While you are going, make disciples of all the nations.” No matter where we are, we should be witnesses for Jesus Christ and seek to win others to Him (Acts 11:19–21). The term “disciples” was the most popular name for the early believers. Being a disciple meant more than being a convert or a church member. Apprentice might be an equivalent term. A disciple attached himself to a teacher, identified with him, learned from him, and lived with him. He learned, not simply by listening, but also by doing. Our Lord called twelve disciples and taught them so that they might be able to teach others (Mark 3:13ff).  A disciple, then, is one who has believed on Jesus Christ and expressed this faith by being baptized. He remains in the fellowship of the believers that he might be taught the truths of the faith (Acts 2:41–47). He is then able to go out and win others and teach them. This was the pattern of the New Testament church (2 Tim. 2:1–2). In many respects, we have departed from this pattern. In most churches, the congregation pays the pastor to preach, win the lost, and build up the saved—while the church members function as cheerleaders (if they are enthusiastic) or spectators. The “converts” are won, baptized, and given the right hand of fellowship, then they join the other spectators. How much faster our churches would grow, and how much stronger and happier our church members would be, if each one were discipling another believer. The only way a local church can “be fruitful and multiply” (instead of growing by “additions”) is with a systematic discipleship program. This is the responsibility of every believer, and not just a small group who have been “called to go.”  Jesus had opened the minds of His disciples to understand the Scriptures (Luke 24:44–45). They knew what He wanted them to teach to their own converts. It is not enough to win people to the Saviour; we must also teach them the Word of God. This is also a part of the Great Commission. An ability (v. 20b). Jesus is not only “in the midst” when His people gather together (Matt. 18:20), but He is also present with them as they scatter into the world to witness. Had He remained on earth, Jesus could not have fulfilled this promise. It was when the Spirit came that Jesus could be with His people no matter where they were. Dr. G. Campbell Morgan told about an experience in his life that involved this statement. Early in his Christian life, Morgan used to visit several ladies once a week to read the Bible to them. When he came to the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Morgan read, “Lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of this age.” He added, “Isn’t that a wonderful promise?” One of the ladies quickly replied, “Young man, that is not a promise—it is a fact!” There are no conditions for us to meet, or even to believe; for Jesus Christ is with us. Paul discovered this to be true when he was seeking to establish a church in the difficult city of Corinth. Obeying this commission, Paul came to the city (Acts 18:1), won people to Christ and baptized them (Acts 18:8) and taught them the word (Acts 18:11). When the going was tough, Paul had a special visit from the Lord: “Be not afraid... for I am with thee” (Acts 18:9–10). The phrase “the end of the age” indicates that our Lord has a plan; He is the Lord of history. As the churches follow His leading and obey His Word, they fulfill His purposes in the world. It will all come to a climax one day; meanwhile, we must all be faithful.

“Go”This stands in rather sharp contrast to “Go not” of 10:5. Cf. 15:24. It is clear that the particularism of the pre-resurrection period has now definitely made place for universalism. Not as if Jesus has changed his mind. It is very clear from the story of the non-Jewish wise men (2:1–12), who came to worship the newborn King, and from such other passages as 8:11, 12; 15:28; 21:43; 22:8–10, that from the very beginning the evangelization of the world was included in the purpose of God. See also John 3:16; 10:16. Matthew too, as has been pointed out, had nothing less than this in mind. But as was stated in connection with 10:5, “In God’s plan it was from Jerusalem that the gospel must spread out among the nations.” Cf. Acts 1:8. Therefore the divinely instituted order was, “To the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Rom. 1:16). The time to make earnest preparations for the propagation of the gospel throughout the world had now arrived. “Go” also implies that the disciples—and this holds for God’s children in general—must not concentrate all their thought on “coming” to church. They must also “go” to bring the precious tidings to others. Of course, they cannot “go” unless they have first of all “come,” and unless they keep coming as well as going. They cannot give unless they are willing to receive. “Therefore”This has already been explained in connection with “The Great Claim.” Briefly it means: Go, a. because your Lord has so ordered; b. because he has promised to impart all the needed strength; and c. because he is worthy of the homage, faith, and obedience of all men. “Make Disciples” Literally the original says, “Having gone, therefore, make disciples.…” In such cases the participle as well as the verb that follows it can be—in the present case must be—interpreted as having imperative force. “Make disciples” is by itself an imperative. It is a brisk command, an order. But just what is meant by “make disciples”? It is not exactly the same as “make converts,” though the latter is surely implied. See above on 3:2; 4:17. The term “make disciples” places somewhat more stress on the fact that the mind, as well as the heart and the will, must be won for God. A disciple is a pupil, a learner. See on 13:52. Also, see on 11:29 for words related to it in the English language. The apostle, then, must proclaim the truth and the will of God to the world. It is necessary that sinners learn about their own lost condition, God, his plan of redemption, his love, his law, etc. This however, is not enough. True discipleship implies much more. Mere mental understanding does not as yet make one a disciple. It is part of the picture, in fact an important part, but only a part. The truth learned must be practiced. It must be appropriated by heart, mind, and will, so that one remains or abides in the truth. Only then is one truly Christ’s “disciple” (John 8:31). Not every person who presents himself as a candidate for church membership should immediately be accorded all the rights and privileges pertaining to such membership. There are expositors who place all the emphasis on “The wedding-hall was filled with guests” (Matt. 22:10). They forget verses 11–14. “Of All the Nations” See above, under the heading “Go.” “Baptizing Them in(to) the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” The main verb is “Make disciples.” Subordinate to this are: a. baptizing them, and b. teaching them. In such a construction it would be completely wrong to say that because the word baptizing precedes the word teaching, therefore people must be baptized before they are taught. It is rather natural that baptizing is mentioned first, for while a person is baptized once (ordinarily), he continues throughout his life to be taught. The concepts “baptizing” and “teaching” are simply two activities, in co-ordination with each other, but both subordinate to “make disciples.” In other words, by means of being baptized and being taught a person becomes a disciple, with the understanding, of course, that this individual is ready for baptism and is willing to appropriate the teaching. —The context makes very clear that Jesus is here speaking about those who are old enough to be considered the objects of preaching. He is not here speaking about infants. To be ready for baptism requires repentance (Acts 2:38, 41). It requires “receiving the word” (Acts 2:41). This also shows that a certain amount of teaching must precede being baptized. The baptizing must be into the name—note the singular: one name; hence one God—of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. A name, as indicated previously—see on 6:9; 7:22; 10:22, 41, 42; 12:21—represents the one who bears it. “Being baptized into the name of,” therefore means “being brought into vital relationship with” that One, viewed as he has revealed himself. Should we baptize “in” or “into”? The debate on this has already lasted many years. Now since even in English—at least in conversational style—“in” frequently has the sense of “into”—“Children, come in the house”—a decision on this point may not be quite as important as some try to make it. Nevertheless, all things considered, I believe “into” is defensible. Neither “into” nor “in” is necessarily wrong. A good case can be made for either. But when we say, “I baptize … in the name of,” this could be understood to mean, “I baptize at the command of,” or “on the authority of,” which certainly is not what is meant. I Cor. 1:13 seems to mean, “Were you baptized into the name of Paul?” Similarly verse 15, “ … baptized into my name.” Cf. I Cor. 10:2. And so here in Matt. 28:19, “into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” makes good sense. Not as if the rite of baptism as such brings a person into vital union with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But, according to Scripture the following are true: a. circumcision was a sign and a seal of the righteousness of Christ accepted by faith (see Rom. 4:11 in its context); b. baptism took the place of circumcision (Col. 2:11, 12); c. therefore baptism, too, must be regarded as a sign and a seal of the righteousness of Christ accepted by faith. Accordingly, when through the preaching of the Word a person has been brought from darkness into light, and confesses the Triune God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, to be the one Object of his faith, hope, and love, then the sacrament of baptism is the sign and seal that God the Father adopts him as his son and heir; that God the Son washes his sins away by his precious blood; and that God the Holy Spirit dwells in him, and will sanctify him; actually imparting to him that which objectively he already has in Christ, and at last bringing him from the Church Militant into the Church Triumphant. Baptism, therefore, is very important. The one who submits to it, if sincere, is proclaiming that he has broken with the world and has been brought into union with the Triune God, to whom he intends to devote his life.—For “Infant Baptism” see on 19:15. “And Teaching Them to Observe All That I Have Commanded You” As already remarked, this teaching both precedes and follows baptizing. The early church insisted that before the person to whom the gospel had been proclaimed be admitted to membership he give evidence of genuine repentance and of knowledge of the basics of Christianity. “The early church was interested in edification as well as evangelism, in sanctification as well as conversion, in church government as well as preaching.” That such teaching should not stop when a person has been baptized is clear from the words, “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” Think of: a. All of Christ’s marvelous discourses.b. All of his parables; both a. and b. including ever so many “commands,” whether implied or expressed. Among them are: c. Precious “sayings,” such as: “Abide in me … love each other … also bear witness” (John 15:4, 12, 27); “Love your enemies” (Matt. 5:44); “Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow me” (Luke 9:23). d. Specific predictions and promises or assurances: “He who comes to me will in no way get hungry, and he who believes in me will in no way get thirsty” (John 6:35); “In the world you have tribulation; but be of good courage. I have conquered the world.” Notice the implied directives for Christian conduct. e. Add to this: the lessons on the cross, hypocrisy, proclaiming the gospel; on prayer, humility, trust, the forgiving spirit, the law. f. And is not even the narrative of Christ’s sojourn on earth—the account of his healing, traveling, suffering, death, resurrection, etc.—full of implied “commands”? “Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you,” what an order! First of all for the eleven and for all ordained teachers; but certainly in a sense also for the entire church, the whole membership. Every true member is a witness-bearer. In view of the fact that after Christ’s ascension there was some hesitancy on the part of Christian leaders to proclaim the gospel to the Gentiles (see Acts 10:14, 28; 11:1–3, 19; Gal. 2:11–13), there are those who believe that either the Great Commission is itself a myth, or else the church quickly forgot about it. They contend that in the book of Acts, the epistles, and the book of Revelation no trace of its influence can be detected.How can we be so sure of this? Do not the following passages testify to the possible influence of, among other factors, the Great Commission? See Acts 2:38, 39; 3:25; 4:12; 10:45; 11:1, 18; 13:46–49; 14:27; 15:7–11, 12, 13–19; 17:30; 19:10; 21:19, 20a; 22:15, 21; 26:15–20; 28:28; Rom. 1:5, 14–16; 11:32; Gal. 2:9; 3:28; Eph. 3:8, 9; Col. 3:11; I Tim. 1:15; Rev. 7:9, 10; 22:17. The Great Comfort 20b. and remember, I am with you day in day out until the close of the age. Cf. John 14:23; Acts 18:10. There is no vagueness about this assurance. It has been called a promise; it is a fact. Note the emphatic introduction: “Remember,” or “Take note,” “Pay close attention,” “Look.” The pronoun “I,” included in the verb, is also written as a separate word and is very emphatic, as if to say, “No one less than I myself am with you.” “With you” not just “forever” but “all the days,” or “day in day out.” Think of these days following each other one by one, each with its own trials, troubles, and difficulties, but each day also accompanied by the assurance, “My grace is sufficient for you. I will never leave you or forsake you.” This continues on and on until the close or consummation of the age. And even then there is nothing to fear; see Matt. 25:31–40.At the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus Christ assures the church of his constant and comforting presence: 1:23 See p. 133 “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and give birth to a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel, which, translated, is ‘God with us.’ ” 18:20 See p. 702 “For where two or three are gathered in my name there am I in the midst of them.” 28:20 “And remember, I am with you day in day out until the close of the age.”
