GOD TAKES US TO THE END OF OUR HOPES:
The place we least want to be…… but the place we most need to be!
Acts 27:20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.
2 Cor 1:8 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. [nlt – We were crushed and overwhelmed beyond our ability to endure, we thot we would never live thru it] 9 Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. 10 He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us,
Acts 23:6 Then PAUL, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, "My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. I stand on trial because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead."
Acts 24:15 and I have the same hope in God as these men, that there will be a resurrection of both the righteous and the wicked.
Acts 26:6 And now it is because of my hope in what God has promised our fathers that I am on trial today. 7 This is the promise our twelve tribes are hoping to see fulfilled as they earnestly serve God day and night. O king, it is because of this hope that the Jews are accusing me. 8 Why should any of you consider it incredible that God raises the dead?
Acts 28:20 For this reason I have asked to see you and talk with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain."
GOD TAKES US TO THE END OF OUR HOPES:
The place we least want to be but the place we most need to be!
Mark 4:37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. THE DISCIPLES woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
Mark 5:23 and [JAIRUS] pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher any more?”36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the synagogue ruler, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.” [Lk.8:50 and she will be healed]
John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies….38 Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. 39 “Take away the stone,” he said. “But, Lord,” said MARTHA, the sister of the dead man, “by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.” 40 Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?”
Isaiah 38:9 A writing of HEZEKIAH king of Judah after his illness and recovery: 10 I said, “In the prime of my life must I go through the gates of death and be robbed of the rest of my years?” 11 I said, “I will not again see the Lord, the Lord, in the land of the living; no longer will I look on mankind, or be with those who now dwell in this world. 12 Like a shepherd’s tent my house has been pulled down and taken from me. Like a weaver I have rolled up my life, and he has cut me off from the loom; day and night you made an end of me. 13 I waited patiently till dawn, but like a lion he broke all my bones; day and night you made an end of me.
JOB 6:8-9 “Oh, that I might have my request, that God would grant what I hope for, 9 that God would be willing to crush me, to let loose his hand and cut me off!
Job 14:19 as water wears away stones & torrents wash away the soil, so you destroy man's hope
Job 19:10 He tears me down on every side till I am gone; he uproots my hope like a tree.
Job 6:11 "What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient?
Job 7:6 "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.
Job 17:15 where then is my hope? Who can see any hope for me? [NTL - Can anyone find it?]
GOD TAKES US TO THE END OF OUR HOPES:
The place we least want to be but the place we most need to be!
Numbers 11:10 MOSES heard the people of every family wailing, each at the entrance to his tent. The Lord became exceedingly angry, and Moses was troubled. 11 He asked the Lord, “Why have you brought this trouble on your servant? What have I done to displease you that you put the burden of all these people on me? 12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers? 13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now—if I have found favor in your eyes—and do not let me face my own ruin.”
JEREMIAH 20:14Cursed be the day I was born! May the day my mother bore me not be blessed! 15 Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, who made him very glad, saying, “A child is born to you—a son!” 16 May that man be like the towns the Lord overthrew without pity. May he hear wailing in the morning, a battle cry at noon. 17 For he did not kill me in the womb, with my mother as my grave, her womb enlarged forever. 18 Why did I ever come out of the womb to see trouble and sorrow and to end my days in shame?
JONAH 4:3 Now, O Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”
1 Kings 19:3 ELIJAH was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there 4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the desert. He came to a broom tree, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.”
EZEKIEL 37:1 The hand of the Lord was upon me, and he brought me out by the Spirit of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. 2 He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “O Sovereign Lord, you alone know.”
11 Then he said to me: "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.'
God takes some to the end of their “hopes” …….
BUTSOME ARE PROACTIVE and TAKE THE INITIATIVE BY FAITH GO THE END OF THEIR “HOPES”
Matthew 26:39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Mark 15:34 And at the ninth hour JESUS cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?”—which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
Genesis 22:9 When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Hebrews 11:17 By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death.
Romans 4:18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, "So shall your offspring be." 19 Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.
Gen 16:16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.
Mark 12:42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. 43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. 44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
God takes some to the end of their “hopes” …….AND
SOME ARE PROACTIVE & BY FAITH GO THE END OF THEIR “HOPES”
Daniel 3:19-23 Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual 20 and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace. 21 So these men, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes, were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. 22 The king’s command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, 23 and these three men, firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace.
Daniel 6:7 The royal administrators, prefects, satraps, advisers and governors have all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or man during the next thirty days, except to you, O king, shall be thrown into the lions’ den. 8 Now, O king, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered—in accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 9 So King Darius put the decree in writing. 10 Now when Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before. 11 Then these men went as a group and found Daniel praying and asking God for help. 12 So they went to the king and spoke to him about his royal decree: “Did you not publish a decree that during the next thirty days anyone who prays to any god or man except to you, O king, would be thrown into the lions’ den?” The king answered, “The decree stands—in accordance with the laws of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed.” 13 Then they said to the king, “Daniel, who is one of the exiles from Judah, pays no attention to you, O king, or to the decree you put in writing. He still prays three times a day.” 14 When the king heard this, he was greatly distressed; he was determined to rescue Daniel and made every effort until sundown to save him. 15 Then the men went as a group to the king and said to him, “Remember, O king, that according to the law of the Medes and Persians no decree or edict that the king issues can be changed.” 16 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”

Hope is A DECISION OF THE WILL:
Ps 71:14 But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more.
Eccl 9:4 Anyone who is among the living has hope--even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!
Ruth 1:12 Return home, my daughters; I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me--even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to sons--
1 Chron 29:15 We are aliens and strangers in your sight, as were all our forefathers. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. [David’s prayer during building project]
Ezra 10:2 Then Shecaniah son of Jehiel, one of the descendants of Elam, said to Ezra, "We have been unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women from the peoples around us. But in spite of this, there is still hope for Israel. [the people’s confession of sin]
Job 4:6 Should not your piety be your confidence and your blameless ways your hope? [Eliphaz, now that all has gone wrong]
Job 5:16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts its mouth. [Job says because of God]
Job 6:19 The caravans of Tema look for water, the traveling merchants of Sheba look in hope. [20 They are distressed, because they had been confident; they arrive there, only to be disappointed 21 Now you too have proved to be of no help; you see something dreadful and are afraid]
Job 7:6 "My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and they come to an end without hope.
[7 Remember, O God, that my life is but a breath; my eyes will never see happiness again] * weaver’s loom, i.e., the frame or machine as a whole used for weaving, but not including the cloth or other implements attached to the frame (Jdg 16:14); 2. weaver’s shuttle, a specific device used in weaving, which passes the thread of the weft between the threads of the warp (Job 7:6), note: the shuttle moves back and forth quickly and repetitively. A vivid analogy is used here and in 9:25, 26 to describe the fleeting nature of life. The “weaver’s shuttle” moves with a rapidity almost impossible for the eye to follow. Verse 7 adds the analogy of “breath.” A similar metaphor is used by James (“vapor,” James 4:14). In 9:25, 26, Job changes the metaphor to that of a messenger running with an important communication. Further analogies of swift ships and swooping eagles all depict the brevity of life. * Job’s choice of the word hope in the context of the weaver’s shuttle may convey a double meaning (11:18). The Hebrew word for hope sounds like the Hebrew word that means “thread” or “cord” (Josh. 2:18, 21). Not only did Job believe his days were without hope but that he had not even a thread of hope left. As if he were regarding a thread in a weaver’s shuttle, Job could not see the design that God had for his life through the suffering that he was experiencing. Though sometimes we may question the Lord as Job did, we must realize that the Great Weaver has a design that we may not be able to see until He is finished with our lives. He was like a weaver’s shuttle, tossed back and forth.
Job 8:13 Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless. [Bildad]
Job 11:18 You will be secure, because there is hope; you will look about you and take your rest in safety. [Zophar 14 if you put away the sin that is in your hand and allow no evil to dwell in your tent]
Job 11:20 But the eyes of the wicked will fail, and escape will elude them; their hope will become a dying gasp." [Zophar]
Job 14:7 "At least there is hope for a tree: If it is cut down, it will sprout again, and its new shoots will not fail. [8 Its roots may grow old in the ground and its stump die in the soil, 9 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth shoots like a plant.10 But man dies and is laid low; he breathes his last and is no more]
Job 14:19 as water wears away stones & torrents wash away the soil, so you destroy man's hope
*18-20. Though Job anticipated that death would release him from life’s woes (v. 14), still he had no hope for reprieve before the grave. Like a crumbling mountain, like stones worn down by water, and like soil washed away by rainstorms, so the hope of man (’ěnôš, “weak, mortal man”) wears away. * Job lapses into a sad lack of hope (v. 18). Though he had expressed his desire for a way of salvation (vv. 13–17), God had not yet fully revealed His plan of redemption. Therefore, Job falls back upon his human wisdom and expresses the alienation from God that he deeply feels (v. 19).

2703 I. v.; ≡ Str 2470; TWOT 655—#1. be ill, weak, faint, diseased (Ge 48:1 Some time later Joseph was told, “Your father is ill.” So he took his two sons Manasseh and Ephraim along with him); be sick (Dan 8:27 I, Daniel, was exhausted and lay ill for several days. Then I got up and went about the king’s business. I was appalled by the vision; it was beyond understanding); afflict (Deut 29:22 Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it); cause illness (Hos 7:5 On the day of the festival of our king the princes become inflamed [sick, drunk] with wine, and he joins hands with the mockers); appear ill, feel sick (2Sa 13:2 2 Amnon became frustrated to the point of illness on account of his sister Tamar, for she was a virgin, and it seemed impossible for him to do anything to her); #2. be wounded, injured, be physically harmed (2Ki 1:2 Now Ahaziah had fallen through the lattice of his upper room in Samaria and injured himself. So he sent messengers, saying to them, “Go and consult Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron, to see if I will recover from this injury); internally wounded, so a very serious, even deadly wound (Jer 10:19 Woe to me because of my injury! My wound is “incurable”! Yet I said to myself, “This is my sickness, and I must endure it.); cause to suffer with wounds (Isa 53:10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to “suffer”, and though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand); be wounded (1Ki 22:34 But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king told his chariot driver, “Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I’ve been "wounded.”; 2Chron 35:23 Archers shot King Josiah, and he told his officers, “Take me away; I am badly “wounded”); #3. weak, i.e., pertaining to having normal health yet not have much power in comparison to another object (Judg 16:7 Samson answered her, “If anyone ties me with seven fresh thongs that have not been dried, I’ll become as weak as any other man); be weak (Eze 34:4 You have not strengthened the “weak” or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally); become weak (Isa 14:10 They will all respond, they will say to you, “You also have become weak, as we are; you have become like us.); #4. feel grief, formally, be ill, have an anxiety or feelings of concern, as a figurative extension of being physically ill (1Sa 22:8 Is that why you have all conspired against me? No one tells me when my son makes a covenant with the son of Jesse. None of you is “concerned” about me [sorry for me”] or tells me that my son has incited my servant to lie in wait for me, as he does today); be grieved (Am 6:6 You drink wine by the bowlful and use the finest lotions, but you do not grieve over the ruin of Joseph); cause to grieve (Pr 13:12+); #5. be tired, be worn out, i.e., be in need of rest and so tired, but not necessarily ill (Jer 12:13 They will sow wheat but reap thorns; they will “wear themselves out” but gain nothing. So bear the shame of your harvest because of the Lord’s fierce anger.)
*BKC It is good for a person to have hope, but if it is not fulfilled for a long time (deferred means “put off or long drawn out”) then he experiences disappointment (his heart becomes sick). But when a hope is fulfilled (vv. 4, 19), a person is refreshed. The gratification of hope gives encouragement like a tree that gives life (tree of life in 3:18; 11:30; 15:4). *13:12 The word “deferred” is literally “drawn out,” i.e., delayed in fulfillment. God’s harvest is slow in maturing (cf. James 5:7), and sometimes the delay “makes the heart sick.” Nevertheless, the harvest or fulfillment of the desire is as satisfying as “the tree of life,” a symbol of God’s renewal both physically and spiritually * 13:12 The tree of life (see 11:30) symbolizes the achievement of a deeply felt desire. It is like coming back to the Garden of Eden.* A common human experience: frustrated expectations cause a loss of morale and a sense of hopelessness.

Ecclesiastes 9:4 Anyone who is among the living has hope--even a live dog is better off than a dead lion!
4-6 despite the fact that all people, both righteous and wicked, are subject to the same inscrutable distribution of adversity and prosperity and ultimately join one another in death, they should not despair of life. Life has advantages over death. Comparing the lot of a live dog with that of a dead lion, Solomon affirmed that it is better to be alive and dishonored (1Sam.17:43; the dog was the most despised animal) than to be honored and dead (Prov. 30:30; the lion was the most honored beast). The living at least have consciousness and hope, things they can look forward to enjoying. But the dead have no consciousness (they know nothing) or hope of reward or enjoyment. Moreover, their passions—their love, their hate, and their jealousy—are stilled. As Ginsburg has noted, the concepts of consciousness and unconsciousness here are not in their barest forms as though these verses taught soul sleep. Instead they should be understood in the context of enjoying life (Ecc. 9:7-9) and possessing the capacities for enjoyment; the living have those capabilities but the dead do not. Thus the living have opportunities and capacities for fruitful labor but the dead do not (v. 10). The living have opportunities for reward from that labor, but the dead do not (v. 5; the word trans. “reward” refers to wages or earnings). The living have capacities for enjoyment (vv. 7-9), but the dead do not (v. 6). Solomon was not describing what the state of the dead is; he was stating what it is not. He did this to emphasize the lost opportunities of this present life, opportunities for serving God and enjoying His gifts. Solomon uses a proverb that says a living lowly creature is preferable to a dead exalted creature. The point is not that death is the absolute end of all things; instead, the point is that while there is life, there is hope of doing something to the glory of God.

Hosea 2:15 There I will give her back her vineyards, and will make the Valley of Achor a door of hope. There she will sing as in the days of he youth, as in the day she came up out of Egypt.
[ Valley of Achor. Lit. “Valley of Trouble,” near Jericho where Achan and his family were judged (Josh. 7:24). This reference alerts Israel that her discipline and judgment would not last forever because there is a “door of hope.” *When the Lord leads Israel out of the desert back into the Promised Land, He will restore her vineyards. The agricultural prosperity envisioned here will be in Israel (vv. 22-23; Dt. 30:4-5,9; Amos 9:13-15), not in the desert. When Israel enters the land she will again pass through the Valley of Achor (lit., “Valley of trouble”), the site of Achan’s heinous sin which jeopardized the success of the Conquest (Josh. 7). However, this time the valley will be a symbol of better things to come, a door of hope leading to repossession of the Promised Land (Isa. 65:10). The effects of the trouble caused by Israel’s past unfaithfulness will have disappeared. Instead she will respond favorably to the Lord as in the days immediately after the Exodus (Jer. 2:2).
Micah 7:7 But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me.
* In spite of his dire circumstances, Micah, as a watchman (v. 4) would intently look for evidence of God’s working, trusting God to act in His own time and way (Hab. 3:16–19). Speaking for himself and the godly remnant mentioned throughout the book, Micah said that even though the nation was in terrible shape he would continue to watch (”watchmen,“ v. 4) and wait in hope for the Lord. Yes, judgment would come, but he knew also that salvation would follow. God would be Israel’s Savior (Isa. 59:20).
Zechariah 9:5 Ashkelon will see it and fear; Gaza will writhe in agony, and Ekron too, for her hope will wither. Gaza will lose her king and Ashkelon will be deserted.
Zechariah 9:12 Return to your fortress, O prisoners of hope; even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
11-12. God’s faithfulness to His covenants with Israel is His basis for delivering her from worldwide dispersion. The immediate addressees in these verses may have been Jewish exiles still in Babylon, but the covenant-fulfillment theme suggests an ultimate reference to Israel’s end-time regathering. At least the nation’s future hope (messianic deliverance) was the basis for contemporary encouragement in Zechariah’s day. The blood of My covenant with you may refer to the sacrifices of the Mosaic Covenant (Ex. 24:8), but could as well relate back to the foundational Abrahamic Covenant which was confirmed with a blood sacrifice (Gen. 15:8-21). The waterless pit (an empty cistern used for a dungeon) is probably a figure for the place of exile. The fortress refers to Jerusalem. The exiles in Babylon were called prisoners of hope because they had God’s promise of being regathered. God will restore twice as much, that is, His blessings in the Millennium will far exceed anything Israel has ever known. *The release of prisoners announced here would serve as a great encouragement for the Jewish people still in exile. Even though the prisoners were living in a well-watered place in Persia (Ezek. 1:1), they were in a place akin to a waterless pit in terms of their opportunity for spiritual nourishment. They were exhorted to return to the stronghold Jerusalem.

[the hope of the promise. The coming of the Messiah and His kingdom. He stated that this hope involved the resurrection from the dead. This is why Christ quoted Moses (Ex. 3:6) to defend the doctrine of the Resurrection (Matt. 22:32). Because Yahweh is the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, people must be resurrected in order to receive the promise God made to them. Likewise the promises made to the Jews demand they be resurrected in the coming Messianic Age. The details of this situation are not known. despaired even of life. despaired = 1820 [exaporeomai; to be utterly at loss, be utterly destitute of measures or resources, to renounce all hope, be in despair. Paul faced something that was beyond human survival and was extremely discouraging because he believed it threatened to end his ministry prematurely. The Gr. word for “despaired” lit. means “no passage,” the total absence of an exit (2 Tim. 4:6). The Corinthians were aware of what had happened to Paul, but did not realize the utter severity of it, or what God was doing through those circumstances. 1:9 the sentence of death.
