Introduction

The book of Revelation was written by the beloved Apostle John in his old age. During the Domitians persecutions, he was banished from the mainland to a little bleak island in the sea called Patmos. While banished on this little island, he was told to write the things which he saw and heard.

The book of Revelation contains special messages directed to churches in seven specific cities throughout the Province of Asia (Rev. 1:4).

John when he received the messages, he heard behind him a "great voice" as of a trumpet, and when he turned he saw seven golden candlesticks (lampstands), and in the midst one like unto the "Son of Man" who held in his right hand seven stars. He was told that the seven stars were the angels (messengers) of the seven churches. The seven candlesticks represented the seven churches. Some scholars say that these churches were chosen certain characteristics typical of the character of the Church of Christ from the end of the first century down to the time of Christ's return for His Church, and describes seven Church periods clearly defined in Church history.
