I wonder how many times today,
I’ve gone to the door and looked out;
For that tow-headed boy with winning ways,
Playing round about.
So often I’ve heard him laugh and sing,
As he romped outside in the shade;
And I knew he was happy just being close by,
As hour after hour he played.
And lots of times he’d knock on the door,
I’d go – and there he’d stand;
Looking up at me with a beaming smile,
A bouquet tight in his hand.
And he’d stand and wait for his reward,
A kiss on top of his head;
And then, He’d give me his favorite surprise,
A flower of the brightest red.
Or he’s call me to come outside,
To see the bright blue jay,
Or perhaps a golden butterfly,
As it flitted on it’s way.
Or see a plane flying way down low,
Or the trail where a jet had sped,
Or the cloud in the sky that looked like a ship,
As it sailed through the blue overhead.
But its been so quiet here at home today,
An exception instead of a rule;
It all adds up to the simple fact,
My baby has started to school.
