Intro - Last week we discussed Propitiation and Limited Atonement.
What is a definition of Propitiation?
Propitiation means satisfaction or covering of a wrong.
Jesus is both the place where the covering is made (the Mercy Seat) and the covering or satisfaction itself.
What is Limited Atonement and why is it a flawed theological teaching?

John is interested in giving us proofs of our salvation and evidence of a real relationship with Christ.

Vs 3 - the word know in Greek is ginōskō and is in the PAI meaning continuous action.
So “By this we continually know that we continually know Him..”
So this a proof or measurement of your standing in Christ.
These proofs give us assurance.
Here in verse 3 the proof is keeping His commandments.
Keeping is in the (P-A-Subjunctive) as it is an if or conditional statement.

FYI - the idea here is that if our manner of life, or our habit of living, is keeping His commandments.
Verse 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Here the person is continually saying, I have a relationship with Christ - I intimately know Him, and continually does not keep His commandments, is what?
A liar… pseustēs where we get our prefix - pseudo or fake.
And the Truth ( Jesus is the Truth!) is not in him.
That is continually not in him.
It is possible to be deceived or self deceived...
Verse 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him.
By this we know that we are in Him.
Perfected means to make perfect, complete, to carry through completely, to accomplish, finish, bring to an end, and it is in what is called a passive voice.
Meaning it happens to you naturally, as a result of continually keeping His word.

Verse 6 - He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
Abides - is another word John uses a lot.
It means to live in or remain in.
Here John is saying he that says, I continually am living in Christ..”
Ought to continually walk - peripateō meaning: to walk, to make one's way, progress; to make due use of opportunities, to live.

So what we say is important, but what how we live and what we do is the proof that what we say is actually true.
