Introduction
Last year there was a British lady, who was on a cruise ship 60 miles off the coast of Croatia.
She was on the back of the boat when she fell off and she was stranded in the water for 10 hours.
Thankfully she was rescued by the coast guards and taken to safety.
I’m sure she was extrememly relieved to see the coast guards and when they were lifting her into the boat she didn’t refuse their help.
She had a great need, she had the offer of being saved and she did what we would have all naturally done, let the coast guard rescue her.
she did not refuse their help.
Just like how the coast guard’s provided safety to the lady so the Lord Jesus Christ offers safety to those who come to him.
He says in “Come to me, all you who labour, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
There are three points that I want us to briefly notice from this verse.
Firstly we notice the one who calls

The one who calls
The Lord Jesus says come to me.
This sounds simple enough but many through out history have missed this point entirely.
He does not say come to a particular church, or an organisation or to a preist or a pope.
He says come to me.
We are called to a person.
That is Jesus Christ.
WHen he says come he means believe in him, trust in his death and resurrection to take away your sin.
Trust him to be your Lord and Saviour.
Jesus says come to me.
Come by Faith.
The Bible says “Look unto me all the ends of the earth and be saved.”
The one who calls.
Jesus Christ says come to me.
The second point we notice is about the people who are called.
II.
The people who are called
The Lord Jesus says “Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden...”
Here the Lord Jesus addresses those who are in need and are aware of that need.
He calls those who are aware of their guilt before God, the greatness of their sin and their need of divine forgiveness.
Those who are afflicted and convicted, Jesus says come to me.
Not those who are self righteous, not those who think they are good enough by themselves, not those who think they have all they need apart from Christ.
But those who know they need a Saviour.
Those who know their need of mercy, those who long for forgiveness and peace with God.
Jesus Christ says come to me.
Believe in me, turn from your sin and turn to me.
Put your trust in me, come to me for forgiveness.
Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden .
The one who calls- Jesus says come to me.
The ones who are called- those who labour and are heavy laden.
The third and final point we notice is the purpose of the call.
III.
The purpose of the call
The Lord Jesus says “Come to me all you who labour and are heavy laden and I will give you rest.”
Jesus says come that you may find rest in him.
He gives rest for your souls.
Are you heavy laden with guilt?
He removes guilt.
Are you heavy laden with sin?
He forgives sin, he sets free from sin.
Are you heavy laden with sorrow?
He gives true joy
Are you heavy laden with despair?
He gives hope and a future
The Lord Jesus says “come and find rest in me.”
You don’t need to labour, put your faith in the finished work of Jesus.
His death and resurrection to deal with your sin and make you right with God.
The hymn says “Jesus Paid it all, All to him I owe, sin had left a crimson stain, he washed me white as snow.”
The Lord Jesus gives rest now and he also gives eternal rest in heaven.
Conclusion
Have you come to him?
Will you come to him?
The lady who spent 10 hours in the sea would have been foolish to refuse the help of the coast guards.
Here we have a far greater Saviour who can save from a far greater problem.
And he says come to me.
If you haven’t yet come to the Lord Jesus by faith, will you do so?
