These things are a blessing from God

God has allowed us the opportunity to study the human body and materials around us to create things that help heal us. A shot of this medicine did not exist in Jesus’ time.

Today we will look at Jesus being Lord over Illnesses- during his ministry as we said yesterday, Jesus did many miracles like calming the storm to give evidence that he was indeed God

Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother in Law

Luke 4:38

Luke 4:38 ESV

And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to him on her behalf.

Context

Jesus has done miracles before this and this is the beginning of his ministry.

Now they were in the town were Simon lives which Jesus spent a lot of time there during his ministry. This town was called Capernaum. after they left the synagogue they went to Simon’s house because they wanted Jesus to heal her.

Here we see a moment of faith in Jesus because they truly believed that he would be able to help her. They've seen other miracles before surely Jesus can do this.

Her illness was a high fever, now back then- she could have easily died from this. She didn't have something called NyQuil to help with her symptoms! So when they asked for help this was like a life or death situation.

Lets look at what Jesus does

Luke 4:39-40

Luke 4:39–40 ESV

And he stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them. Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him, and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.

Who remember’s something similar in this passage from the passage yesterday?

Focus on rebuked

Jesus Healing was Immediate

Medicine takes some time to enter into the body and its a process of getting better.

However, Jesus is Lord over it all! So as soon as he desires it to be gone- it was immediately gone and she got up and began to serve them.

News Spread

Look, whats crazy is that it doesnt stop there. Im sure people heard because its a small town. Once they all heard that Jesus was able to do these amazing miracles they came to be healed by him.

Jesus is the true Medicine

But want to hear something more amazing?

Jesus actually is the only medicine for a specific type of illness.

Your memory verse says this

Psalm 103:2–3 ESV

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases,

The Lord is the one who forgives iniquity which is another word for sin

Peter will come to understand this later listen to what he says

1 Peter 3:18 ESV

For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit,

The reason Jesus died on the cross is because He was the only medicine that could heal the problem of sin.

Because the problem with sin is that it doesnt allow for a right relationship with God- but when we believe in Jesus and turn away from our sin, Jesus heals us of our sin.

Remember when Simons mother in law was healed it says that she immediately got up and began to serve him?

Well Christians are people who have been healed by Jesus from our sin- and when that happens we should immediately have the desire to get up and serve him as our Lord.
