We opened Philippians talking about Practical Christianity.  Paul used himself as a model. Chapter 2, we saw Paul provide Fatherly Advice and help steer us a Christians in the right direction.  This morning, we are going to talk about what do we value? What is important to us.  

Week 4 - Paul will give us more encouragement.

This morning, the question set before us is what do we value?

Last week, Brylee was in dance camp. At the end of the dance camp, she had a , performance and danced in three songs. The whole group did so well. As you can imagine, all the parents were there, taking pictures and clapping. At the end of the performance, they call out each name and the child goes up and gets a medal.

This was her first medal. She was so excited about it. She wore it most of the day. She was so proud.

I want us to think back at those trophy’s that we won. Maybe we won them for a sport or academic excellence. All the time, energy, money, blood, sweat, tears that went into getting those awards.

Application - We often find ourselves placing value in things that don’t have eternal value. Like acquiring the trophies or awards, we can work ourselves to death trying to be the best. We are the best at work, the best mom, the best wife, the best husband, the best dad, the best at church. We strive everyday to accomplish get everything we can. At some point, you realize that all these things that you have been chasing, don’t fill that void in your heart.

"We've always had a global mindset when it comes to getting the gospel out," Kaufman told Mercury News. "This is our home of operations, but we have a heart for the nations."

Philippians 3:1–11 ESV

Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you. Look out for the dogs, look out for the evildoers, look out for those who mutilate the flesh. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh— though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the law, a Pharisee; as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness under the law, blameless. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

1. What did Paul Value?

I want us to think back at those trophy’s that we won. Maybe we won them for a sport or academic excellence.

Paul recognizes this feeling. In , he says in verse 4 “though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more:” Why can he say this?

What is going on this chapter that requires such a harsh warning

He was circumcised on the 8th day

He was an Israelite, trip of Benjamin, Hebrew of Hebrews

He was a Pharisee, persecutor of the church

He was righteous and blameles

Paul was a good guy.

He valued what others thought was important

He had every reason to boast

Encounter with Christ

Philippians 3:7–11 ESV

Philippians

But.... But is a powerful word because it interrupts all this. Everything I gained. Everything I had. Paul says, I was good! He says BUT I count all that as lose. Everything!. It is like rubbish or garbage. After we encounter Jesus nothing else matters.

His life has changed because he lets go of what is behind him and focuses on whats ahead.

Some of us need to shed what is behinds us and move forward.

Paul presses on toward the goal. Understanding that the prize is the upward call in Christ. Do we think this way? Paul says let the mature think this way. Are we mature.
