Intro- We are looking each evening at our ultimate example… Jesus, and how we need to be more like Him.
Before we start examining Him tonight, I want to first talk about something that Paul famously wrote. It is something that I want us to think about for a minute.
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
I want us to understand the depth of that statement. Paul had just gone through a list If I (speak in tongues, have prophetic powers, understand all mysteries, have all knowledge and faith that can move mountains) but don’t have love… I am nothing..
I want us to understand that “love” wasn’t Paul’s strong suit… (sometimes we may think that what we do really well is more important than other things that we aren’t good at)… Paul isn’t doing that here… Paul, who was formerly a persecutor of the church, did not have love as his strong suit… This message came from God… If you have not love… you are nothing...
Let’s look at how Jesus loved.
Love Caused Jesus to leave Heaven
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
Love caused Him to have compassion on those in need
36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Love caused Jesus to die
16 By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
Love caused him to care about those who killed him
34 And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.
