Exegesis vs. Eisegesis
Exegesis = Letting the text speak for itself
From the Greek preposition - ek (out)
Extracting the objective meaning out of the text.
Eisegesis
From the Greek preposition - eis (in)
Imposing the reader’s meaning into the text.
Infusing my meaning into the text
Asking the right questions
Author - Who was this written by?
Author - Who was this written by?
Recipient - Who was this written to?
Context - What were the circumstances?
Why does context matter?
Famous Example: The Random Man
A man who decided to flip to a random page and point his finger randomly on a page and wherever his finger fell, that was God’s message for him.
Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself.
And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”
Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
You want to be fair to the author.
How would you like it if you wrote something and somebody took it way out of context?
People in the news do this often, they will grab a “sound bite” all by itself and that can often be misleading.
By the way, this is what a lot of critics do. You’ll come across this as young people.
You may hear “oh the Bible contradicts itself” or the Bible endorses slavery or murder or you’ll hear all sorts of accusations about the Bible.
But as Deep Bible Students, now you know that context matters! Don’t just believe everything you hear. Look it up for yourself and study the context.
If we’re not careful, we can do this too

Pericope - Where does the idea begin and end?
What is the unit of thought?
“A pericope is a set of verses that forms one coherent unit or thought, suitable for public reading from a text.” - Wikipedia
Why is that important? Well you want to be fair to the author.
How would you like it if you wrote something
