What are spiritual gifts for? verse 7

What is the purpose of spiritual gifts
How can pride enter a person because of these gifts
Purpose- what are they used for? before we dive into the purpose of Spiritual Gifts, let’s go to school and a set up a framework for Gifts.
define spiritual gifts (grudem definition and scripture examples)- a spiritual gift is any ability empowered by the Holy Spirit and used in the ministry of the Church. God has given us gifts: some appearing more natural (teaching, showing mercy, or administration). . . others appearing to be less natural (prophecy, healing and others).
Paul labors in different places to give lists of different gifts:
Purpose
Romans 12:6–8 ESV
Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
rom 12:
1 Corinthians 12:8–10 ESV
For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
1 cor 12:
1 Corinthians 12:28 ESV
And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
1 cor
we see these gifts used throughout the Old testament, the priest, prophets/prophetess utilized by God and we see the Gifts of the Spirit in full reality at the arrival of Jesus in the earth see luke 4:14
Luke 4:14 ESV
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a report about him went out through all the surrounding country.
Jesus unleashes his power and authority and empowers His disciples to operate in the gifts of the spirit.
Matthew 10:7–8 ESV
And proclaim as you go, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons. You received without paying; give without pay.
matthew 10:
So throughout God’s story, the Spirit of God has been at work in the lives of those God has called to be about the ministry of the Kingdom.
people have misused, misinterpreted, misapplied the reality of spiritual gifts in the life of believers. Spiritual gifts are not as mysterious as some have made them out to be. They are given by God, but we have the responsibility to steward and use them effectively.
Purpose- what are they used for? gifts are given to build up the church
gifts are given to build up the church
See 1 peter 4:10:
Practice
1 Peter 4:10 ESV
As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:
See 1 peter 4:10
God has given Spiritual gifts to the body to equip the church and and carry out the ministry of the church until Christ returns.
The next questions that comes up is how many gifts are there? I don’t know, and I am not afraid to say this. . we just don’t know. We have about six list in scripture with gifts; however Paul does not give us an exhaustive list of them.
1. apostle
2. prophet
3. teacher
4. miracles
5. kinds of healings
6. helps

whoever speaks (covering several gifts)
whoever renders service (covering several gifts)
This is just catalogs of gifts: notice Paul doesn’t include prayer, I believe prayer is spiritual gift given by God for us to communicate to Him. I hope I am in a room full of people who believe in the Power of Prayer. Anybody knows that prayer changes things, can anybody testify about God answering some of your prayers: some answered quicker than others. Nevertheless, as the saints of old would say “He may not come when you want Him, but whenever He comes he’s right on time. Prayer is a gift from God.
prayer was not on the list, praise and worship was not on the list. I believe God has given us praise and worship as a Spiritual gift. Do I have a witness? The Bible tells us “to enter into His gates with thanksgiving and into His courts with praise”, can I be honest with you. Can Jerome be honest with you? There have been times when I have come into the Lord’s house burdened, my heart has been overcome with grief, my body has been rocked with pain, my belly aching because of this Vegan lifestyle. I haven been overwhelmed by crazy politics, depressed because to some Black lives don’t matter, and the list goes on and on. Saddened because of the loss of a loved one. . . . and then all at once it happens.
the song during the deacon devotion begins to move me, The choir or praise team starts singing the Words of God and I can’t help but start singing, I can’t help but to start giving God the Glory, i can’t stop clapping my hands, my feet start to get light, and the praise and worship helps me see that God is my burden bearer, and my heavy load carrier, i become reminded that God is the strength of my life and my portion forever, The worship reminds me that when i am weak God is strong, I am an overcomer through Christ Jesus, and that no weapon formed against me will be able to prosper!!!!
Do all believers have gifts?
I believe God has given us Praise and Worship as a gift.
Gifts are given for the Building of the Church

Who has Gifts? verses 4-6

Possession
Do all believers have gifts?
How does one posses gifts
Who gives the gifts
Do all believers have gifts?
once a person comes into relationship with Jesus; and have been brought from death to light. and have been saved by the marvelous grace of God; THEN your spiritual gift is given to you. The Follower, Disciple of Jesus Christ!
1 Corinthians 12:7 ESV
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

in essence; all True Christians have been given a gift to utilize for the building of God’s kingdom: Not mine, Not Pastor Orr’s, Not Pastor Anderson’s, not for the Kingdom of Brown Baptist ; For the Kingdom of God.
in essence; all True Christians have been given a gift to utilize for the building of God’s kingdom: Not mine, Not Pastor Orr’s, Not Pastor Anderson’s, not for the Kingdom of Brown Baptist ; For the Kingdom of God.
the issues this raises is the reality of gifts not given because of one’s maturity in Christ. This is strange; God doesn’t wait until we are 5 years in our walk with Him to give us a gift; God doesn’t re-certify us after 20 years of service. Rather, He empowers us by His spirit at the point we surrender to His will.
So let me clear the air today, Receiving spiritual gifts has nothing to do with our maturity in Christ; rather God’s grace on our lives.
Many people have been held captive by some of the seasoned saints who create religious castes systems in the church: “you are new so just stand in the corner on one leg until you get some age on you; limitations have been placed on new believers because they don’t know certain Baptist traditions and have no clue on the the Old time way. . . . it doesn’t work like this in the kingdom of God! All of us who have been baptized and filled with the Holy Ghost has been gifted and empowered by God!
as we just recognized in the first point, these gifts are for the body of Christ, the building up of God’s people. Not for OUR OWN glory; Our boast should be in Christ and Christ alone; but you know how we are. . .God gives us a gift, we discover what it is. . and we forget who gave us the gift, why we have the gift. . and all things about ourselves. #Mane we get puffed up, we start feeling ourselves.
how do i know this? it surrounds our text, Paul is dealing with a young church at Corinth who are grappling with immaturity and the gifts God has given them.
1 Corinthians 3:1 ESV
But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ.
1 cor
Paul was talking to this church like it was a Baptist church; because as I read this I think about the modern church and church people. We start throwing our spiritual weight around because of our gifts. We become so special, we get all advanced in our Spiritual Theology and become so heavenly bound, and no earthly good. We have the worst attitudes, make silly demands:(PAUSE) i was at congress last week and heard folks making their starbucks orders “Tall caramel macchiato with 3 pumps of vanilla, 3 pumps of caramel, 3 circular rotations of caramel drizzle. . Hallelujah! and then had the nerve to have the barista bring the drink out to them from behind the counter.
all believers have been empowered by God with gifts, these gifts are not based on our maturity but because of God’s glorious grace; not for our glory but for the glory of God.
Are gifts permanent or not?
How does one posses gifts
Who gives the gifts

How are the gifts activated in us? verse 11 how do we use our gifts

The Holy spirit gives us these gifts and distributes as God desires.
can’t earn a gift, God gives them. can’t work hard for a gift, God distributes as He sees necessary.
Our responsibility is to work with what we got.
God has richly lavished His love on us, He saved us and reconciled us to Himself. He has prepared a place for all Believers who remain faithful in this life. As the songwriter said years ago: “ He’s done so much for me, I can not tell it all.” “over and over and over He keeps on blessing me”, and the list of praise to our God could go on and on. If we had 10,000 tongues, we could not praise Him enough.
Many of us in here and online can testify to the greatness of God. . . however, something happens to me when I see someone operating in their gift . . sometimes I ask: Lord, why not me? why did you not give me that gift Bro/Sis___ has? We begin to covet the gifts of others.
Ok, I must be the only one. I drive up in the parking lot and see the team doing their thing (rain, snow, hot) I got to thinking God I want to do that like them. Park the car and see the greeters at the door while those warm smiles, Lord if only I could smile and create a wonderful atmosphere like them. The Ushers navigating people through the chaos of finding seats, solving problems, and sending fans and tissue when people need it. I see the ERT and wish i had those gifts.
Anytime the praise team/choir is up leading us in worship, I start saying Lord if I had that I could. . . . .
God tells us in His word not to covet other people or their possessions. You remember the parable of the talents,
Matthew 25:15 ESV
To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away.
the brother with the one was like #mane, you gave them the talents i wanted and so i did nothing with what you gave me. . . (Jerome’s paraphrasing)
Brothers and Sisters we got to use what God has given us

look at what our text says: different kinds of gifts, different kinds of service and they work in different ways. We have these gifts to help each other, to build up the body of Christ and to edify the church. God gives us the gift that He has perfectly designed and crafted for me; and I want to live my life so God can use me anyway and anyhow. I don’t want to waste my time looking at other folks and wishing for God to give me what they have. . . i want work with what i got.
I am reminded of my 2 boys: Daniel and Dylan. Love my boys, i know my boys and I have to operate with this knowledge to handle daily situations. I don’t know if what I’m about to say is in accordance with Baptist doctrine but these events began before we became Baptist again. My Boys have ipads and they play various games on there and on the xBox. 2 games that come to mind (Roblox and Fortnite). Any young folks in the house? These games are tricky for me as a parent because I wrongly assumed that after you purchase the game it was a done deal.
i was wrong, the games has this feature called in-game-purchases were i can take my hard earned money and buy “V-Bucks and Robucks” to get swag, weapons and stuff. The problem is one son is conservative and the other son is the total opposite. One son can make his v-bucks last 1 week; my other son will spend all his Robucks in 1 minute. Because of this, I distribute the gift (my money) to them both but it just looks different. To one i can unload all the money at one time; and the other i have to ration his funds so he will not spend it too quickly.
same gift, from the same giver, for the same purpose- just looks a different way
Whatever God has for me, it’s for me! Someone in here needs to be encouraged today to stir up the Gift God has given you.
If you: list different gifts of the spirit- use examples from scripture
teach
serve
prophesy
give advice
discern
speak in tongues
