Gen 6
Noah is not the hero of this story, God is.
And on display is His great mercy.
5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.
6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.
7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”
8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
9 This is the account of Noah and his family. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God.
Genesis 5:
Finish story of flood
The Ark helped Noah escape the wrath of God
The Heart of man in verse 5 is contrasted with the heart of God in verse 6 (same word)
God created us in His image/likeness
When God regretted or was grieved making man, it was like a father who made His children in His very image of righteousness and now they have completely rejected their father.
How evil and unrepentant did they have to be?
Serial killer
25 (There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife.
26 He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols, like the Amorites the Lord drove out before Israel.)
27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around meekly.
28 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite:
God would have saved anyone who would hear His warning and believing that warning, turn.
Most people will hear this and think there is something special about Noah
(Every scheme of our hearts was perpetual evil)
Righteous, blameless, walked with God
God’s mercy
7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.
Heir means he inherited not earned his righteousness through faith
He heard
He believed
He was urgent
He Obeyed
5 Through him we received grace and apostleship to call all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith for his name’s sake.
Romans
Faith produces obedience
22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
5 And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.
His obedience proves his faith, and by faith he recieved God’s mercy and was called blameless
Jesus is a type of Ark that by faith we may escape the wrath of God for our rebellion
