THE NEED FOR VICTORY IN THE CHURCH
THE NEED FOR VICTORY IN THE CHURCH
ROMANS 6:11–20
INTRODUCTION. There can never be victory in the church, until first the need is realized. When there is complacency, self-satisfaction, and self-emulation, there must follow a spiritual and moral degeneration. The Word of God warns us, “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.”
THERE IS A NEED FOR VICTORY BECAUSE OF:
I. THE AGGRESSIVENESS OF SATAN.
A. I believe in a personal devil. John 8:44; 1 John 3:8.
B. I believe that he is aggressive. 1 Peter 5:8; Eph. 6:10–12.
C. I believe that he stands back of every aggressive move of anti-christian endeavour. Eph. 2:22; 2 Cor. 4:4. (1) Communism; (2) Crime; (3) Cults, including Modernism; (4) Catholicism.
II. THE INCREASE OF WORLDLINESS IN THE CHURCH.
A. There is too much compromise with the world. James 4:4.
1. When the Word is preached, people say they are scolded, and resent it. Ezek. 2:1–8.
2. Some in the church would compromise the truth to gain the friendship of the world. James 4:4.
B. People need to understand that the preaching of the Cross is offensive to the world. 1 Peter 2:6–8.
C. Godly living will bring persecution from the world. 2 Tim. 3:12.
III. THE PREVALENCE OF INDIFFERENCE IN THE CHURCH
A. It is becoming more difficult to move people with the preaching of the Word. 2 Tim. 3:5–8; 4:1–5.
B. More difficult to get people to stand for God and His way. Ex. 32:26. Illustration: Elijah, 1 Kings 18:21; “They answer him not a word.” Note three things: (1) They did not oppose his program of revivalism; (2) They made no statement in favor of idolatry; (3) They stood unconcerned, not willing to stand for God.
IV. BECAUSE OF THE PRESENCE OF SPIRITUAL DEFEAT.
A. Believers: Slaves of worldly habits; puppets of evil lusts; sensual desires. 1 John 2:15–17; Col. 3:5; Matt. 5:27, 28.
B. Believers: poisoned by jealousy, retaining grievances, unforgiving spirit. Eph. 4:30–32; 2 Cor. 12:20.
C. We need a victory over the flesh that only the Holy Spirit can bring. Gal. 5:16.
V. BECAUSE OF THE ALARMING DEGREE OF FRUITLESSNESS AMONG CHRISTIANS.
A. Every Christian should be able to say, “I have witnessed, prayed, and cried for souls.”
B. We are saved not just to fill a pew; but to be a channel through which the Holy Spirit can win others to Christ. 2 Cor. 5:19, 20. John 16:7–9; Illustration: Acts 2:4–6 Filled v. 4; Witnessed v. 6.
C. True we are living in days of evil apostasy, but I believe that many sinners can say as David when chased by Saul, “No man cared for my soul.”
