GOOD PEOPLE AND HEAVEN
MARK 10:17-22
I. THE YOUNG MAN’S CHARACTER
A. THOUGH RICH, HE WAS HUMBLE
B. HE WAS MORALLY ABOVE REPROACH
C. HE HAD A KNOWLEDGE OF AND REVERENCE FOR GOD
II. THE YOUNG MAN’S HUNGER
A. FOR ALL HIS GOODNESS, HE FELT THAT HE WAS LACKING
B. FOR ALL OF HIS WEALTH, HE WAS STILL DISSATISFIED
C. DESPITE OF HIS KNOWLEDGE OF GOD HE WAS UNSURE OF HIS ABILITY TO ATTAIN HEAVEN
III. THE CHALLENGES OF JESUS
A. WHY DO YOU CALL ME GOOD, THERE IS NON GOOD BUT GOD
1. ALL OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS IS BUT FILTHY RAGS
2. “ALL HAVE SINNED AND HAVE FALLEN SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD”
3. YOU CALL ME “GOOD” DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHO I AM?
4. WILL I BE THE “MASTER” OF “YOUR” LIFE?
B. WILL YOU KEEP ALL OF MY COMMANDMENTS?
C. WILL YOU GIVE UP EVERYTHING, SURRENDER EVERYTHING, TO FOLLOW ME?
IV. THE FIRST REQUIREMENT OF DISCIPLESHIP
A. SELLING OUT COMPLETELY
1. GIVING IT ALL UP, NOT MATTER HOW VALUABLE IT IS TO US PERSONALLY
2. TRUSTING JESUS COMPLETELY
a. PLACING NO CONFIDENCE IN WEALTH
b. PLACING NO TRUST IN POSITION
B. TAKING UP OUR CROSS TO FOLLOW HIM
1. NO TURNING BACK
2. FOLLOWING HIM DOWN THE STREET
a. TO BE REVILED
b. TO BE SPIT ON
c. TO BE DESPISED
d. DEAD TO SELF, ALIVE IN JESUS
V. TWO GREAT PROMISES OF JESUS
A. YOU SHALL HAVE TREASURE IN HEAVEN
B. YOU SHALL INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE
VI. THE YOUNG MAN’S CONDEMNATION
A. HE CONSIDERED THE COST TO HIGH
B. HIS LOVE OF MONEY AND POSITION OUT WEIGHED HIS LOVE OF JESUS
C. HE ENJOYED THESE PRESENT JOYS MORE THAN THE ANTICIPATION OF HEAVEN
LESSONS:
1. BEING GOOD WILL NOT TAKE US TO HEAVEN
2. A KNOWLEDGE OF GOD WILL NOT OPEN THE HEAVENLY DOORS
3. ONLY SELLING OUT COMPLETELY WILL GAIN US TREASURE AND ETERNAL LIFE
