Evangelists

We are looking at the five fold ministry office of the church given by the Lord “for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry”
Ephesians 4:11–12 NKJV
And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,
The goal of which is the “unity of the faith” and “knowledge of God”
Ephesians 4:13 NKJV
till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
We have seen how the Office of Apostle and Prophet work together within the church structure, today we look at the Evangelist
The word Evangelist here is akin to a harolder - one who proclaims especially “good new” - Gospel
Remember that the Office of Apostle requires the operation of all 5 gifts for they are the ones establishing the work
The Evangelist is the one who has an unquenchable, ravenous desire to engage in wining the lost!
John the Baptist
John 1:6–7 NKJV
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe.
John had a message of good news and gave his life to deliver it!
Again we see that there is a demonstration of the office which then affirms the call in a persons life
Billy Grahm, Greg Laury, Angus Buchan, John Wesley, George Whitfield,
History marks the years 1880-1935 the Era of Evangelists
The most well know D.L. Moody, Founder of the YMCA traveled to London 1872 and was asked to pulpit fill. more than 400 people responded to at the close of his message. He returned in 1873 to what became a 2 year tour to England, Scotland, and Ireland. Thousands got saved.
Moody had a great concern for saving souls. He was quoted as saying “I look upon this world as a wrecked vessel. God has given me a lifeboat and said to me, “Moody, save all you can!”.
"It is not our strength we want. It is not our work to make them believe. That is the work of the Spirit. Our work is to give them the Word of God. I cannot convert men; I can only proclaim the Gospel."
His key? Preach the Word only - 3 R’s Ruined by sin; Redeemed by Christ; Regenerated by the Spirit.
The Welsh revival - G Campbel Morgan
In Wales, however, a revival occurred in 1904 which deeply affected the lives of the people, the church, and the society. In meetings throughout Wales, people came face to face with their sinfulness and the Lamb of God who alone could redeem them. Lives were transformed; drunkenness, idleness, and gambling decreased. Even criminal convictions declined, and judges had no cases to try. The coal miners in the villages were so changed that their horses became confused. Since the horses had always been given their commands in kicks and obscenities, they did not know what to do when they were given their orders by converted masters.
J. Edwin Orr (1912-1987) extensively studied revivals and wrote numerous histories of them. From his studies he concluded two things about revivals: they are intimately related to prayer, and they are always the sovereign work of the Holy Spirit, going beyond any denomination or man's design. Orr's hymn "Cleanse Me", can well become our prayer for the church today: O Holy Ghost, revival comes from Thee; send a revival, start the work in me.
Obviously, regeneration is the first step to discipleship
Jesus said in John 16:8
John 16:8 NKJV
And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Notice the pronoun “He”
The Holy Spirit isn’t a superpower you receive that responds upon command like superman jumping over tall building in a single bound!
The Holy Spirit is a person with which whom you have a relationship!
You cannot grieve the wind or the waves, but you can offend another person!
It is within that relationship that I learn to yield myself to the Spirit’s leading, desire, and words
The work of an evangelist is not easy
Paul told Timothy:
2 Timothy 4:1–5 NKJV
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
Acts 21:8 NKJV
On the next day we who were Paul’s companions departed and came to Caesarea, and entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him.

I want to take a moment to point out here that women
Acts 8:40 NKJV
But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.
Easton’s Bible Dictionary

EVANGELIST—a “publisher of glad tidings;” a missionary preacher of the gospel (Eph. 4:11). This title is applied to Philip (Acts 21:8), who appears to have gone from city to city preaching the word (8:4, 40). Judging from the case of Philip, evangelists had neither the authority of an apostle, nor the gift of prophecy, nor the responsibility of pastoral supervision over a portion of the flock. They were itinerant preachers, having it as their special function to carry the gospel to places where it was previously unknown. The writers of the four Gospels are known as the Evangelists.

Now we are all called to share the good news with others
Matthew 28:18–20 NKJV
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
It should be the primary function of all christians
Not everyone has the call of Evangelist, but everyone does have gifts that will assist the Apostle, Prophet and Evangelist complete the great comission
