A. The Prerequisite for the Spirit (16:5–7): Jesus says unless he goes away, the Holy Spirit will not come.
Codependent on his physical presence
Walk by Faith and not by Sight II Cor 5:7
Total dependence on Jesus is by Faith
Saved by Grace through Faith Eph 2:8-9
B. The purpose (16:8–15): The Holy Spirit comes to accomplish a fourfold purpose.
1. To convict sinners & reveal righteous (16:8–10)
Reveal what is sin and what is righteousness
Some will believe and confess Jesus as Lord and become true believers
Others reject the truth and continue living in their Sin
True righteousness is revealed in Jesus and his death on the cross
Jesus was seen as unrighteous, but was really the righteous one
2. To condemn (Judge) Satan (16:11)
Jesus resurrection destroys the Sting of death and free us the Law which is the Power of Sin.
3. To counsel saints (16:12–13)
The Holy Spirit counsels and guide us into what is truth and right
He consoles us during difficult times
4. To champion the Savior (16:14–15)
The main goal of the Holy Spirit is to Exalt Christ, not himself
