Intergenerational interaction
Mother’s Day
Titus 2:3-5
OBJECTIVE: It is my objective to show the way that intergenerational living is the best way. Titus shows that very well. On this mother’s day, we must have a commitment of the older to share with the younger and the younger to be willing to be shared with. The younger can also teach the older the new ways of life.
1. What is intergenerational interaction?
2. What does one generation teach the next?
3. Picture of 5 generations—Amy’s family
4. What does one generation teach the next?
5. 128 The people who influence us most are not those who buttonhole us and talk to us, but those who live their lives like the stars in heaven and the lilies in the field, perfectly simply and unaffectedly. Those are the lives that mould us. Be one of these people.
6. You can be right but Wrong at the top of Your Voice
From an old Tennessee Mountain man--Words that soak into your ears are whispered... not yelled.
I. Need for intergenerational living
A. Negative-The story when one generation did not teach the next--Judges
B. Positive-Ruth
II. Instruction concerning Women 3-5
Titus 2:3-5 ESV 3 Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
A. Aged women—Older Women—White hair, you can’t tell today--
1. Idea of those who are older-Even 60 +
2. Widows indeed
B. How should you live?
1. As years go by, there should be maturity
Bible talks about silly women who are swayed easily
2. Reverent in behavior
Reverent in their demeanor--Conduct as they are servants in God's temple.
a. Reverent—Becoming holiness
--Adornment
--Put on as you would put up decorations
1 Peter 3:2-6 ESV 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening.
Romans 16:2 ESV 2 that you may welcome her in the Lord in a way worthy of the saints, and help her in whatever she may need from you, for she has been a patron of many and of myself as well.
1 Timothy 2:9-10 ESV 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.
b. Behavior—Demeanor, proper disposition—Becomes holiness
--Your pattern of life
--Change your attitude—Pattern of thinking
3. Not slanders—Destroying someone’s good name
a. Slander-Name given to Satan
b. Gossip—One who is in others business
--Part of the problem or part of the solution
-- I can’t talk about others, I won’t have anything to say
--Not like the modern day politician
4. Not Slave to wine-drunkard
--Alcoholic
--How much alcohol is too much when driving?
--Bible does not specifically talk about alcohol as sin, drunkenness is sin
-You are not in control
-Had so much fun last weekend - can’t remember
5. Teacher of good things
Hebrews 5:12 ESV For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
--What should a young lady know when it comes to dating
--You are not married and do not have to submit to the date even if he paid
--Young moms. That stage will pass and you will get a full nights sleep again
III. What are good things the Older women to teach the younger?
A. What is more important than anything else to teach?
B. Practical teaching-train or school, to bring to ones senses
1. to be sober-serious minded-sound in mind
--Not giddy or silly but disciplined and correct
2. Love their husbands
--Watched the Barbara Walters interview by Charlie Gibson
--Terrible example of an older woman
--Different in those days
--Get married and then love
--Love and then get married
1 Timothy 5:14 ESV So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.
3. Love their children-fond of ones children
Children must be high priority in their lives
--Instinct
--“I love them too much to spank them.”
Jr. Hi English teacher
--Mom, you are to keep your family first
--Latch key kids
--Library become day care centers
4. Chaste--Pure
-Pure in thought
-Pure in dress
-Pure in life
-Pure in action
5. Keepers at home—Home is the priority, Some will stay home, some will work out, all will work
Proverbs 31:10-31 ESV 10 An excellent wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life. 13 She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands. 14 She is like the ships of the merchant; she brings her food from afar. 15 She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. 17 She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong. 18 She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle. 20 She opens her hand to the poor and reaches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household are clothed in scarlet. 22 She makes bed coverings for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them; she delivers sashes to the merchant. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. 26 She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. 28 Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 “Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.” 30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. 31 Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.
1 Timothy 5:13 ESV Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.
6. Kind-things that are good and beneficial
7. Submissive to their own husbands
OBEDIENT--hupotasso--to subordinate; reflexively, to obey: -be under obedience (obedient), put under, subdue unto, (be, make) subject (to, unto), be (put) in subjection (to, under), submit self unto.
THEIR OWN
1 Corinthians 11:3 ESV 3 But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.
Ephesians 5:22-24 ESV 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.
Ephesians 5:33 ESV However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Colossians 3:18 ESV Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
IV. REASON-So God and His Word are not reviled
--Purpose Clause—Late for Class, go to the office and get an excuse slip
--So that the Word of God be not blasphemed
--So that the Word of God be not reviled
--In order that the Word of God be honored
Romans 2:24 ESV For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
1 Timothy 5:14 ESV So I would have younger widows marry, bear children, manage their households, and give the adversary no occasion for slander.
1 Timothy 6:1 ESV Let all who are under a yoke as slaves regard their own masters as worthy of all honor, so that the name of God and the teaching may not be reviled.
