Welcome to the Grand Opening - Bruce
Welcome to the Grand Opening of McKinney Fellowship Bible Church. I’m Bruce Miller, the Senior Pastor, and it is my privilege to give a special welcome to those of you who are worshipping with us for the first time. I hope you feel right at home. Today is a birthday for McKinney Fellowship Bible Church. Over the last 12 months, McFBC as we like to call it, has been in gestation preparing to be born and today is the day. Today is the birth of McKinney Fellowship Bible Church. [applause]
We are a daughter church, planted from Fellowship Bible Church North in Plano, pastored by Gene Getz, where I served on the staff for over 10 years. In the course of the last 12 months a core group of over 400 people has come together as a team to fulfill our mission: “To reach people with the gospel of Jesus Christ by establishing a Church in McKinney to impact our community and the world for the glory of God.” As a team our vision is “to cultivate a Christ-centered, Bible-based, Spirit-empowered community which dynamically draws people to trust in Jesus, worship God, build relationships, grow to maturity and serve Him.”
We welcome each one of you here today. Thank you for coming to celebrate with us the birth of McKinney Fellowship Bible Church. Please take the blue Response Card out of your program and fill it out. We want to have a record of each person here for the Grand Opening and we want to hear from you. Note that there is a front and back to the card. On the front you can let us know how to communicate with you and on the back you can communicate with us your interests, decisions and prayer requests. Later in the service when we take the offering, please place the Response Card in the Offering basket.
Let me ask Louis Miller to come forward at this time. Louis was born in McKinney. His family represents five generations in McKinney. In the 1960s Louis served as a the Mayor of McKinney. Over the years as the President of McKinney Title Company, Louis has helped to build McKinney, Texas to be what it is today. For at least the last 20 years Louis and his wife Syble have prayed for a Church like this in McKinney and God has heard their prayers. Please welcome Mr. Louis Miller. [applause]

Message
What would you preach on if you were speaking at a Grand Opening for a new church? If you were me what would you chose to speak about on the Grand Opening? What is the most important topic? Love, strong families, faith. What is most critical to a Church? To you sitting in these chairs? What is the hottest, most relevant topic of concern to most people today? Moral values, security, balance in our lives. Of every passage and person in the Bible, which is most important? What is the foundation of the Church? What is the foundation of your life, your marriage and your family?
[slide]
God is . . .
God. God is the most important. God is the most important topic. God is the foundation of the Church and should be the foundation of our families, marriages and lives. God is the most relevant and critical hot topic today, tomorrow and always.
Who is God? There are many competing ideas about who God is in our society today. God is a force. God is the love we all share. God is nature. We are all God. God is a heavenly ace in the hole. God is a vengeful judge. God is a loving Santa Claus. God is a figment of people’s imaginations; a nice idea as a crutch for weak people who can’t handle life as it is.
In America we put God’s Name everywhere. We say, ‘In God we Trust” on our money [hold up a dollar bill]. We say we are a nation “under God.” But what do we really mean by all that. Did God just create the world and now He has left us to run on our own. Does He really care? Does He hear prayers?
In our media we are bombarded with wildly different ideas about God: from Yoda in The Empire Strikes Back saying that the Force is God and the Force is in everything to Shirley McLaine looking out at the ocean screaming at the top of her lungs, “I am God.”
Mia Farrow [like arrow] in her recently published memoirs quotes Frank Sinatra as saying, “I have respect for life in any form. I believe in nature, in the birds, the sea, in everything I can see. If these things are what you mean by god, then I believe in God. But I don’t believe in a personal God to whom I look for comfort or for a natural on the next roll of the dice. I’m for anything that gets you through the night, be it prayer, tranquilizers or a bottle of Jack Daniels.”
What gets you through the night? What’s your foundation? Do you have a foundation?
Video Clip
God is real. He is not just a face in the clouds. He’s not just a warm bright light. I’m not saying He did not communicate to the woman in the video, but God is real. He is as real as you and I.
Who is God? Who is God? Who is God really? [pause] God is Jesus Christ. What? Let me repeat it. God is Jesus Christ. Now I know that biblically God is a trinity; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We baptize in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. And the Father, the Son and the Holy Sprit together are one God. The trinity is a deep mystery which I will be able to explore today because today we are going to focus on Jesus Christ. It is true that Jesus is fully God.
To many people Jesus Christ is a wonderful moral teacher, a religious leader to be admired and appreciated. But that is not Jesus Christ. To others Jesus is a kind and gentle man who loved children and showed us how to live by the golden rule. For still others, Jesus is a fraud, one more in a long line of people with a Messiah complex. To still others Jesus is whatever you want Him to be.
We have been presented with many pictures of Jesus in the media. The Greatest Story Ever told; Martin Scorcase’s, The Last Temptation of Christ; The Life of Brian, Jesus Christ Superstar and Godspell. We wrestle with different racial images of Jesus: the Hispanic Jesus, Asian Jesus, Middle Eastern Jesus. In New Jersey, people are upset right now because the actor playing Jesus in a Passion Play is black.
Still others would say, Jesus can be whoever you want him to be. Believe whatever you want, just don’t try to get me to buy into what works for you. Let me do my thing and I’ll let you do yours. Let’s respect each other’s beliefs without trying to convert each other. It doesn’t really matter what you believe about Jesus as long as you just believe something.
In contrast, I submit to you, that what you believe about Jesus is the most important determining factor in who you are and what you will be. I submit that how you relate to Jesus will determine your eternal destiny. I submit that what you believe about Jesus is the single most critical factor in determining the quality of your life on this earth. And how this Church deals with Jesus will be the single most influential factor in the future health of McKinney Fellowship Bible Church.
If Jesus is as important as I am claiming, who really is He?
Who is _________ really? [Jesus]
With all the different pictures and perspectives, who is Jesus really? He is the most remarkable person in history. The most unique person in the universe.
Jesus is God
Where did He come from? What is He like? How can we describe Jesus accurately? We can look to the Gospels, the first four books of the New Testament, to get a glimpse of who Jesus is. They were eye witnesses who walked and talked with Jesus.
The Apostle John describes Jesus in beginning of his gospel John 1:1:-5 in what was been called poetry because it is so tightly worded:
[SLIDE] “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.”
___________ is the eternal Creator God. [Jesus]
For some of you, this may be an arresting thought. Didn’t GOD create the universe? Isn’t God eternal? I thought Jesus was the guy here on earth on was born in Bethlehem and died on a cross? Yes, He is, but Jesus is also the eternal Creator God. Jesus was in the beginning. The Apostle John is saying that Jesus is literally God. He created the world. Jesus did not just help create the world or create a small part of it. John says, that through Jesus all things were made and that nothing has been made without Him.
Jesus is the eternal one and only God. This is a shocking thought. The Bible is not merely saying that Jesus has the characteristics of divinity, but that He is actually, literally God Himself, the one and only God. Jesus is God.
As I anticipated this day, I prayed for each one of you sitting here, not by name, but I prayed that God would bring the people He wanted to be here for the Grand Opening. And I’ve asked myself and asked God, what should I say to those who come on this one special day. You’ve come for various reasons: some to check out this new church, some of you have come to support me and the others starting the Church, some of you have come because you know you need to get on better terms with God, you need to get back in Church.
But I’ve had to ask myself, what is the most important, most helpful thing I could say to those who come today? I could talk about how to have a good marriage, how to balance life’s competing demands or how to succeed, and those are important topics which I will address in future messages, but today I have made the prayerful decision to speak to you about what could most dramatically change your life, about what will most directly impact your eternal destiny beyond this life, about what would most help you make sense of your life today, I have chosen to speak about Jesus Christ.
Some have said, don’t do that, because Jesus Christ is controversial, others say don’t do that because Jesus Christ is old hat; we all know about Him. Because Jesus Christ is not practical for my daily life. And of greatest concern: Jesus Christ may offend some of you here today and you may never come back to McKinney Fellowship Bible Church.
I don’t agree with every objection, but I do with the last one. Jesus Christ is offensive. The Bible says that Jesus is like a rock before which we have two responses: either He becomes the foundation stone of our entire life or He is the rock over which we stumble. Jesus is like a crossroads: you either follow him or reject Him. And this message will be like a crossroads: some of you will fall in love with Jesus and chose to follow Him; others will reject this message and chose to ignore Jesus. And others will be intrigued, but want more time to think things through. My hope for McKinney Fellowship Bible Church is that this church will be a safe place for you to come and investigate what God is all about. I pray that McFBC will be a place of love and acceptance for everyone no matter where they are. If you are an atheist, you are welcome here. We want you here. If you don’t know what you believe, we want you here. You are welcome. If you are struggling with major problems that life often brings, you are welcome. If you are dealing with the emptiness of financial success, you are welcome.
I hope that McKinney Fellowship Bible Church will be a loving and accepting safe place to hear a dangerous message. A message of hope and life, a message about the most incredible individual in the universe, a message about Jesus Christ.
Who is Jesus Christ? The Apostle Paul joins the Apostle John in describing who Jesus is, Paul describes Jesus in Colossians chapter one and verses 15 and following: [SLIDE] “He is the image of the invisible God, the first born over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities.; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”
Whether in heaven or on earth, visible and invisible, Jesus created every single tangible thing AND He also created powers and authorities: human and angelic. And every thing is created for Him. And everything that exists is held together by Him. Jesus Christ sustains the very existence of the universe. Without his sustaining power an atom would blow apart. Without Him sustaining the universe it would fold. Without Jesus sustaining your existence, you would not take another breath. Jesus is God who created and sustains everything. Jesus is the lifeblood of the universe.
Jesus is God. He sustains all things by His powerful Word because He is the Word which created all things and which now sustains all things. Jesus is the eternal creator God. Remember the mystery I mentioned earlier. Like we said, there is One triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
But the best part is that not only is Jesus God. What makes Him unique even from the God the Holy Spirit and God the Father, is the fact that Jesus became a man.
Jesus is a human
Paul says in Philippians chapter 2 verses 5-8,
[SLIDE] “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man.”
Although Jesus is absolutely and completely the one and only God Almighty, He chose to make himself nothing, to become a human being. Remember the old Sci Fi moves like King Kong and Godzilla with the giant fake apes and creatures before computer animation, and remember the recent movie, Congo with the fake apes that you knew were really actors dressed up in monkey suits. Well Jesus was not just God dressed up in a human suit. No, Jesus did not just look like a human being, He is a human being. He joined our human race. This does not mean that Jesus merely put on humanity like an overcoat which he could easily discard.
___________ is a real, concrete ___________. [Jesus; human]
Jesus was a fetus in Mary’s womb conceived in a supernatural way by the Holy Spirit. Jesus was born through Mary’s birth canal and had an umbilical cord which had to be cut. He bled and had to heal. He cried and was a helpless infant who nursed at Mary’s breast. Jesus was born in a stable where it smelled of animals and straw. Jesus was a little boy who had to learn like other infants how to walk and talk. Jesus was a real, concrete human. He fell when he was learning to walk; he talked what we call baby talk when he was learning to speak Aramaic.
Jesus was a boy. He went through adolescence and all the hormonal changes that we go through in those years. When he was 12 years old Jesus’ parents, Joseph and Mary, took Jesus on a trip to Jerusalem to a big festival and then accidentally left him there. And with having five kids myself it always makes me feel better to know that even Jesus’ parents forgot Him once.
Jesus lived through what we often call the Junior high years. He probably went to some kind of school for kids that age as well as learning carpentry from Joseph his earthly dad. Jesus was a Senior higher. If he had lived today he probably would have been thrilled to get his driver’s license when he was 16. In Nazareth, maybe he was thrilled to get his own donkey. I don’t know. Somehow a donkey doesn’t seem as exciting as a Mustang.
When he was learning carpentry from his dad, Jesus probably hit his thumb with a hammer. What he said when he hit has thumb may have been different from what we sometimes yell out, but he yelled out in pain and he lived with a swollen purple thumb. Jesus got splinters. Jesus is a real concrete human.
Jesus was hungry and thirsty. Jesus was tempted to sin. Jesus was not tempted just a little, but tempted to the maximum degree in every way. Satan was determined to get Jesus to fall and since he resisted, Satan kept upping the pressure of the temptation, but Jesus did not give in. He knows what it feels like to be tempted.
The author of Hebrews says, in chapter 4 verse 15, [SLIDE] “For we do not have a high priest (that is Jesus ) who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet without sin.”
Jesus was tempted to be unfaithful to God. Jesus was tempted to abuse power. Jesus was tempted in the area of bodily pleasure and gratification. Jesus was tempted to sin. Jesus was tempted to go against His Father. Most likely Jesus was tempted worse than you have every been. He knows what it feels like. He has been there. Jesus is a real concrete human.
Jesus knows pain. He cried. Jesus knows physical pain. He was beaten and bled. Jesus knows emotional pain. He was abandoned by his friends and rejected by his people. Jesus knows mental anguish. He knows what it is to suffer.
And perhaps most of all Jesus shares our humanity by sharing in the reality we all must face as fallen humans under God’s judgment. Jesus died. He shares in death which defines what it is to be a fallen human being. Jesus know what it feels like to die. He knows what it feels like to draw his last breath.
Jesus did not die a natural death. Jesus was killed in a public execution. He was on death row and was executed on a hill outside Jerusalem by crucifixion. Why did He do it? Why become a human in the first place? But more to the point, if He is really the eternal creator God, why did He let Himself be tortured and killed in such a cruel way?
Jesus did it for you. He did it out of love and compassion because He knew that apart from his sacrifice of Himself, you and I would be lost forever, condemned to separation from God in hell forever. He knew that the only way to overcome the curse of death was to take it on Himself as a human being. As God, Jesus is our judge who gives the sentence of death for our sin. As God, Jesus is also our Savior who pays the price we rightly deserve to pay. Jesus died for you and me because He loves us.
But what makes Jesus most unique and worthy of our worship is that He was not defeated by death. No, death could not hold him down. Jesus defeated death. Jesus rose from the dead victorious over death and Satan and evil.
Jesus in risen glory
After Jesus rose from the dead, he met with his followers for 50 days and then as He said He would, He ascended into heaven to be with God where He rules now from His throne. Jesus is the resurrected King of glory. And as the glorified and exalted One, He retains his humanity in a gloried form. Jesus is the one and only God-Man
___________ is the One and only _____________. [Jesus; God-Man]
Because Jesus took the incredible step of sacrificing Himself for us and then showed His awesome power by rising from the dead and conquering death, He is exalted to the highest place in the universe. All of heaven sings His praise.
Paul says in Philippians 2 finishing his poem in verses 9-11: [SLIDE] “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.”
Because of what He has done as God Himself, in becoming a man, dying for us and conquering death, Jesus has been given Him the name above every name. He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. One day at the Name of Jesus every knee will bow and every person will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.
In the last few years a number of people have claimed to have seen Jesus or God or have been to heaven and brought back a message from above. One of the latest is a book called Conversations with God, now number 6 in the Best Seller list.
But I know of one man who I know God gave the privilege of seeing Jesus now in heaven. God let the Apostle John see a vision of Jesus glorified in heaven. John records what He saw in Revelation chapter 1:12-18 He tried to find the best words he could, the best images he could, to paint a verbal picture of what Jesus Christ looks like now.
[SLIDE]
“I turned around,” John says, “to see the voice that was speaking to me. And when I turned I saw . . . someone like a son of man, dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance. When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.”
Jesus is alive and well. Jesus’ eyes blaze like fire and His voice is like the sound of rushing water. His face shines like the most brilliant sunlight. He is alive forever and He has the keys to death and to life everlasting.
This is Jesus now. Jesus is the Living One. Jesus is the risen Lord. Jesus is the King of all. He deserves to be honored and praised and worshipped. He deserves our full and complete devotion. He has called us to be his people, to serve Him.
We asked at the beginning of this message: What is the most important topic? What is most critical to a Church? To you sitting in these chairs? What is the hottest, most relevant topic of concern to most people today? What is the foundation of the Church? What should be the foundation of your life, your marriage and your family?
Jesus is the foundation. Jesus is the most important topic. He is most critical to the Church. The Church is His body. Jesus is the head of the Church. Jesus is the hottest, most relevant topic today. Jesus is the best and most practical help I can give you.
So you see, because of who He is and what He has done, Jesus has supremacy in everything. He is THE CEO of the universe. And as the CEO of the universe and the Head of the Church Jesus calls us to follow Him. He calls us follow Him in several specific ways. At McKinney Fellowship Bible Church, we are committed to following Jesus Christ in what He has called us to do. There are five basic things Jesus calls us to do:
As THE ______ [CEO] of the universe, Jesus leads us to
Trust in Him
Worship Him
Love each other
Grow to be like Him and
Serve in His Name
Jesus call us to trust in Him: God says if we will trust in Jesus, give our lives to Him, he will reconcile us to God. He will forgive us of our sins and we can join Jesus in His victory over death, Satan and hell. We can live forever with God in heaven.
Jesus calls us to worship Him as the worthy King, the CEO of the universe deserving of our full and total devotion.
Jesus calls us to love each other as His brothers and sisters. When we trust in Him, He adopts us into His family making us His brothers and sisters.
Jesus calls us to mature, to grow up to be like Him in our character. This is a call to obedience to become the people God want us to be.
Jesus calls us to serve in His Name. He is the greatest servant of all. He calls us to serve each other and our community in His Name.
Jesus once asked those who were around him, “Who do you say that I am?” I submit to you that the answer to that question is the most important answer to the most important question you will ever answer. “Who do you say that I am?”
I submit to you once more, that what you believe about Jesus is the most important determining factor in who you are and what you will be. I submit that how you relate to Jesus will determine your eternal destiny. I submit that what you believe about Jesus is the single most critical factor in determining the quality of your life on this earth. And I maintain that how this Church deals with Jesus Christ will be the single most influential factor in the future health of McKinney Fellowship Bible Church. Jesus Christ is the rock on which the Church is built.
Who is Jesus really? Would you recognize Him if you met Him today? Do you really know Jesus? [tie into the lyrics of the song]

Close of the message
Would you know Jesus? Do you know Jesus? You can know Him. Jesus asked the crowd, “Who do you say that I am?” Who do you say Jesus is? For many people perhaps most in our country, Jesus is simply a great religious leader, the founder of Christianity, a wonderful moral teacher, but that’s not it. You see Jesus did not leave us the option of viewing Him simply as a good moral religious leader. No, He claimed to be God Himself and claimed that He and only He is the way to God. Jesus says He is the way, the truth and the life. No one can get to God any other way. So we are each left with a simple choice: we can either worship Jesus as God or we can reject Him. You can know Him if you trust in Him. You can give your life to Him and He will show Himself to you. You can be reconciled to God through Jesus Christ. You can worship Him now and live with Him forever in heaven. Jesus knew that we would be lost without Him, so out of His incredible love and compassion, He stepped out of heaven to love us, to die for us. And God says we can be forgiven and life forever if we will simply confess our sin and trust in Jesus Christ alone. Simply join me in this brief prayer to express your new faith in Jesus Christ, “Dear God, I know I have done wrong things. I have sinned against you and our relationship is not right. I trust in Jesus Christ alone to forgive me and give me eternal life. I trust in Jesus to reconcile me to You. Thank you for forgiving me and giving me eternal life. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
If you have already trusted in Jesus Christ, maybe today you need to reconsider whether or not you are really following Him. Maybe you need to renew your commitment to Jesus Christ. How will you follow Him? Will you trust in Him, worship Him, love His brothers and sisters, grow to be like Him and serve Him? Maybe McKinney Fellowship Bible Church can be a place for you to renew your commitment to follow Jesus.
Please look at your Response Card in your program for a minute with me. You can use this card to express your commitment to trust in Jesus Christ or to renew your commitment to follow Him. On the front you can let us know how to get in touch with you and then on the back you have an opportunity to communicate with us. Please let me know if you have trusted in Jesus Christ today for the first time by checking that box and if you have renewed your commitment to Christ let me know that as well. In addition, write down any thing else you would like to communicate with me.
In just a moment we are going to take an offering. An offering is a tangible opportunity to show our commitment to follow Jesus with our finances. When the ushers come to take the offering, please remember to put your Response Card in the offering basket.
Let’s pray, “Lord Jesus, we praise your awesome, glorious Name which is above all Names. We worship you the King of kings and Lord of lords. There is no one like you in the entire universe. Please take these offerings we present to You as a token of our worship, an expression of our hearts filled with praise for You. May McKinney Fellowship Bible Church always put You first and honor You above all. In Jesus Name, Amen.”
