Theology of Election
Theology of Election
37 All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.
For mature discussion
Deeper doctrine is important.. not just emotional matter that we keep in our heart
The sovereignty of God in salvation
Election
1.Election - “All that the Father gives me will come to me..”
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
Jesus 6:39
God must give people to the Son.
God must give people to the Son.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
It is God...
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love
According to His own good pleasure, according to His sovereign will
12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Paul: not by the will of the flesh, but by the will of God.
Let us not forget God’s role in our becoming His children:
13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
God’s love is unconditional in that God loves us no matter what. Election is also unconditional that God chooses men unto salvation on the basis of His sovereign will alone.
God’s love is unconditional in that God loves us no matter what. Election is also unconditional that God chooses men unto salvation in the basis of His sovereign will alone.
Background of .
This is the “Bread of Life” discourse.
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Jesus did not sweat out that these people rejected Him.
36 But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe.
Jesus did not sweat out that these people rejected Him.
2. Effective Call.
“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me..”
In other words, God’s choosing and call of someone compels Him to salvation.
Jumping to
44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.
Jihn 6:44
No one can come to me, what does this say, by His own free will? No, unless the Father draws Him..
This may sound that salvation is very restrictive. It is restrictive only if we think that we are the primary agents of our salvation. When we surrender to the truth that it is God Who had the right to choose and to save then we would not be so concerned about the doctrine of election..
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
The right understanding of salvation is significant in the way we live our lives us CHristians:
“Pastor Ramon didn’t the Bible say somewhere that we should work out our salvation with fear and trembling?”
12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,
see..
but don’t miss the next verse:
:!3
13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.
John 10
6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. 7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. 13 He flees because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” 19 There was again a division among the Jews because of these words. 20 Many of them said, “He has a demon, and is insane; why listen to him?” 21 Others said, “These are not the words of one who is oppressed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?” 22 At that time the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem. It was winter, 23 and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the colonnade of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered around him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father’s name bear witness about me, 26 but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.” 31 The Jews picked up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus answered them, “I have shown you many good works from the Father; for which of them are you going to stone me?” 33 The Jews answered him, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.” 34 Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your Law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—and Scripture cannot be broken— 36 do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’? 37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me; 38 but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father.” 39 Again they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. 40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing at first, and there he remained. 41 And many came to him. And they said, “John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true.” 42 And many believed in him there.
9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
This is why Jesus does not sweat about those who reject Him..
Background of John 6.
Jesus’ blood was shed to save mankind and it was totally not potentially effective.
Salvation is the work of a sovereign God.
For someone to come to Jesus, the Father will first give him to the Son..
Then there is the work of the Holy Spirit in the man’s heart that prompts him to receive Jesus.
It makes sense because the Bible says the natural man cannot receive nor understand ths spiritual
14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
For someone to come to the foot of the cross, the spirit of God does the work to turn that natural heart and make it open to receive spiritual things..
A lot of people will disagree, well I qualified myself by doing all these good works. I have not hurt anyone, I am a loving person, etc etc
Listen to this, the Biblical doctrine that gives credit to God and diminishes man puts us in our right place!
A doctrine that makes man small and God big is a wonderful thing, so unworthy are we!
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
Pride
Praise the Lord that it tells us that it is the blood of Jesus that saved us, it is not our own doing, but let us also be thankful that God even chose us unto salvation.
Would it be wrong for God to be the One Who qualifies?
Would it be wrong for God to be the One Who qualifies?
Don’t be upset that God does not save all. Be thankful that God saves at all!
We are so unworthy and God is all praise-worthy!
God does not call the qualified. He qualifies the called.
With this kind of knowledge of the sovereignty of God, that He chose you and me from the foundation of the world. It becomes very humbling to us and it raises our gratitude and appreciation of Him.
Our knowledge then drives our affection and with that kind of affection we will tend to live our lives for His glory.
Our knowledge then drives our affection and with that kind of affection we will tend to live our lives for His glory.
3. Effective Salvation
4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
Two things happen when the Father draws man,
Spiritual blindness is removed. Suddenly we see our desperate need for the Savior, and also we see the vileness of our sin.
It is like a light bulb turns on, all
So we run to Jesus!
It is like a light bulb turns on, all
Jesus said:
“and whoever comes to me I will never cast out”.
Second thing:
When Jesus died for us, it it not just the potential of saving us. Jesus’ death is totally effective in saving us.
“Jesus took names to the Cross”
6 “I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word.
9 I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.
Jesus knew you by name when He died for you on the cross.
This is why Jesus does not sweat about those who reject Him..
Background of .
29 Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.”
Question is “If election is of God, the why evangelize?”
If God made the pre-determination of who among mankind will be saved, then why exert any effort in evangelism at all?
This is an extreme stand among some denominations, there are Christian denominations who are not so keen on evangelism because they took the doctrine of election to an extreme that somewhere they have made a wrong turn.
We will crush this hyper belief and this mistake simply by this..
This truth about God’s election and call does not crush evangelism, it ignites evangelism..
God is passionate about Evangelism!
13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
14 How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? 15 And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
37 On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink.
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
God does not choose all but it is our responsibility to call all.
We do not know Whom God has chosen but we know that God has a general call.
Why do we have to evangelize?
Because God commanded us to do so and it is our responsibility to be the means by which God calls all.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
There is a general call, but there is also an effectual call..
Jesus Himself said many are called
We have a responsibility to run to Jesus
We have a responsibility as a church to make the call..
The highlight of this verse:
“… and whoever comes to me I will never cast out.”
4. Effective Security.
“I will not cast out”.
39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day.
From that first of act of God’s saving grace to our final moment on earth, Jesus will not lose anyone.
This is the best news..
People challenge this belief, what if we sin.. it is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when..
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
But I have a habitual sin,
We should be dead in sin..
Eternal security is not hard to accept, if we accept that it is the pure sovereign act of God that saved you, it is also the sovereign act of God that secured you.
If you know in your heart that you came to Jesus and that you have been changed, don’t listen to anyone who tells you that you may have lost your salvation..
God the Father - Elects
God the Son - Who redeems
God the Holy Spirit - Who seals and secures.
In ROmans 8, Bible tells us Whom He predestined (Election) He also called (Effective call), those whom he called he also justified (effective salvation), and those he justified He also glorifed (effective security).
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
John 10:27
Would you thank Jesus today?
