Title- Leader or Follower
Passage- 2 Samuel 2:1-4
Attention-
We hear a lot of discussion about leadership
In government
In schools
In the courts
In the church
Leadership is an important topic
Introduction
Moses was a great leader but so was Joshua and he followed Moses for about 40 years in the wilderness
Elisha served Elijah for about 10 years before he took up his master’s mantle and went on to perform even more miracles.
The Apostle Peter followed Jesus for three years—and made a lot of mistakes—before he and his fellow-disciples “turned the world upside down” (see ).
What is the main driving point (CPS)?
Friends, sometimes to be a good leader we need to start by being a great follower...
Why does the CPS matter, what is the consequence?
Obviously this morning we will be looking at who to follow biblically
In this passage we find three truths from the life of David that will help in establishing you in your walk with God.
In this passage we find three truths from the life of David that will help us see the necessity of following the Lord before we lead others
Whether it be in our church, workplace, or our home
Following the Lord fist is what makes a good leader
We are all leaders
Mom’s invest an immense amount of time leading their children
Dad’s invest in their families
Wherever you are in life you play some level of leadership role in the life of someone
It may not be a formal role with a title but we all have leadership influence on someone.
Transition
The first truth we see from Davis is that...
I. David sought God’s plan (2:1)
Explain
I believe that David, for now, has learned his lesson.
He tried going his own way
Remember David back in when he goes on in his own wisdom and with his own plan.
David begins strong in …then was tested and failed…now is back on the path of faith.
Bridge to today
It is no different for us today
The Lord convicts us, we repent…then we are discipled and grow
As we are growing and being stretched Satan starts his work as well
We submit to the Lord
We start walking
Then it gets more difficult
The circumstances move from black and white to shades of grey
We make a wrong choice…or maybe just not the best choice
We get discouraged
We can go from a simple trip to stumbling…or worse, falling
Relevance
Think back to the parable of the prodigal son...
David calls out in
Why does this matter?
We will make mistakes…we will stumble…we may even fall
The truth to remember here is that it is never too late to come come back
As long as you have breath in your lungs it is never too late to turn back
Transition
First David turned back, secondly....
II.
David submitted to God’s plan(2:2-3)
Explain
The Lord spoke to him and told him to go to Hebron.
You must remember that Ziklag was destroyed by the Amalakites.
The Lord did not direct David to wage war with the house of Saul, even though that is probably what Joab wanted.
The Lord did not tell David to plan a coronation party, the Lord did not tell David that he needed to build a palace.
God did not tell David that he should appoint his heads of state.
He just simply directed him to go to Hebron and David obeyed.
You must see, that God doesn’t reveal His total plan for us, if He did, we would not be able to walk by faith, we would instead be walking by what we could see and understand.
Bridge to today
My children are use to a fairly simple list of chores...
What if tomorrow I sat them down and told them that in 15 years they would have to.....and fill in the list of all the things an adult does during a day
Mom’s make a complete list of all you do in a week and on different days and give it to your daughters
Dad’s list out all that you do during the week na give it to your sons
They would look at that and be completely overwhelmed
We slowly give them chores
We slowly add to their responsibilities
Relevance
We are the children of God…and He wants to guide us and direct us to a mature Christian life.
He is not going to overwhelm us with everything all at once
We think this is what we want but in reality…He knows better
The Lord slowly gives us a little more at a time
He slowly adds to our responsibilities
It starts with the ability to submit even if we don’t see the next step.
I think even more often it needs to start even when we CAN see the next step
Why does this matter?
God has plans for each of us…
He is woking in and through each of us
When God is working and we are submitting then great things are happening
There is growth
There is encouragement of others
There is iron sharpening iron
When we resist we become dull and useless
Like a knife that never encounters the sharpening stone
We become dull and blunt and not fit for use
Submission of EVERY Christian is vital to the plan and purpose of God
Transition
The third area ties in a bit with the first two but....
III.
David was content in God’s plan (2:4)
Explain
Now remember, that David has been chosen by God, and anointed by Samuel to be king over all Israel.
David hears from God, then David obeys God and goes to Hebron.
While he is at Hebron, he is chosen as king over the house/tribe of Judah.
Now you know what a lot of people would have done.
