28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
ILL - Fear and shame when parents would come home vs. happy anticipation when my parents would come home.
28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming.
Abiding is for now, and important for children to do.
Abiding is the key to confidence
Familiarity is gained
Friendship develops
Trust is established
Interest is shared
Learning occurs
Confidence is what we long for most in our relationships.
A relationship with God is probably one of the most controversial relationships today. It is held in high suspicion by unchurched people.
To aid in this confidence we must know something of great importance…not how am I doing, but rather what is God like
29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.

If you push back on Christianity this is probably where you would push - I push back with you.
This is a knowledge that transcends our lives. There is not a more confident building reality than to know what God is like, and more specifically what He is like to you and for you.
Birth comes before behavior
ILL - baby being born
Don’t let the order of the verse dictate your theology. The tense flows opposite in the passage - birth leads to behavior.
If we get this backwards we don’t have Christianity, we don’t have relationship, we have religion. (Man’s best efforts to get God’s approval) or at worst we have a pretense of Christianity.
Christians do things, and they ought to do things that Jesus did, but so does anybody that associates or follows anything else - sports fans cheer for the team, gun people shoot guns, chess players love chess, vegans are trying to make you vegan…actions always follow what in our hearts, but Jesus isn’t out for your hands...
Heart has to come before the hands.

According to a British doctor, unloved babies do not grow normally. At an international conference of family doctors held in Toronto, Dr. G. C. Jenkins said nurses caring for unloved babies are taught to look at them and talk to them until the babies fix their eyes on the nurses’ faces. When the babies become aware of the nurses’ faces, they will start to gain weight and grow.
One reason unloved babies do not grow normally could be the effect their unhappiness has on the digestive system. Dr. Jenkins said that a happy baby’s stomach is producing the hydrochloric acid necessary for digestion, whereas the acid production is shut off if somebody upsets the baby.
