The word “thanksgiving” can be defined as the expression of gratitude, especially to almighty God. One of the great commandments is to give thanks to God, for all he has done for us. According to
we are to “enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his Courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and bless his name”.
Christ, himself, was the perfect example of obeying this commandment.
It is also giving thanks to God for many blessings which should not be limited to only good times but also bad times thereby giving us the opportunity to demonstrate our faith in God. Thanksgiving will draw our hearts out to God and keep us engaged with him, it will take our attention from ourselves and give the Holy spirit room in our hearts.
We can show thanksgiving to God –
(1) By remembering him in our thoughts, words and deeds.
It is impossible to give gratitude to God if we never think or speak of him. We can also memorize the scriptures to remember his promises and show gratitude.
(2) By identifying his lordship over our lives-
Counting our blessings and realize that we are who and what we are because of God. .Reflecting on all God has done for us in all areas of our lives i.e spiritually, financially, physically etc. especially the sacrificing of our Lord Jesus Christ which is the greatest gift of all.
18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 thess 5:
(3) By giving thanks in prayer-
We should thank God as often as we pray that we should have his spirit in us to teach us to pray. We should bear it in mind that the prayer that begins with trustfulness and passes on into waiting, will always end in thankfulness, triumph and praise. We show our dependence on God through prayerful thanksgiving which should be done daily.
(4) By praise:
We should praise and thank God through songs with the use of musical instruments, clapping of hands etc.
19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,
, .
30 I will praise the name of God with a song,
And will magnify Him with thanksgiving.
19 Then out of them shall proceed thanksgiving
And the voice of those who make merry;
I will multiply them, and they shall not diminish;
I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.

A Song of Ascents.
1 Behold, bless the Lord,
All you servants of the Lord,
Who by night stand in the house of the Lord!
2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary,
And bless the Lord.
3 The Lord who made heaven and earth
Bless you from Zion!
A Psalm.
1 Oh, sing to the Lord a new song!
For He has done marvelous things;
His right hand and His holy arm have gained Him the victory.
2 The Lord has made known His salvation;
His righteousness He has revealed in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered His mercy and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
4 Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
Break forth in song, rejoice, and sing praises.
5 Sing to the Lord with the harp,
With the harp and the sound of a psalm,
6 With trumpets and the sound of a horn;
Shout joyfully before the Lord, the King.
7 Let the sea roar, and all its fullness,
The world and those who dwell in it;
8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
Let the hills be joyful together before the Lord,
9 For He is coming to judge the earth.
With righteousness He shall judge the world,
And the peoples with equity.
Many of us only praise God when He blesses us and sometime not even then, We get discouraged if times get hard if it feels as though he isn't listening to our prayers
God is no Gini in a bottle He does answers our prayers in accordance to His will
But even if times are tough one can always see Good in every situation there is always something to be grateful for.
We shall praise him will all of our heart, Not just because of blessings in your life but for the Glorious Gift He has given us the escape from Hell its self by the Sacrifice of His only Son
16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
This should be enough to praise Him always to run through the streets shouting

(5)By repentance-
Always being conscious of our wrongdoings and confessing our sins is a way of showing gratitude to God .Gratitude is also the foundation upon which repentance is built because it shows we acknowledge the mercy of God.
Repentance cleanses us of our sins and brings about additional blessings if done with a sincere heart and willingness to desist from such sins.
Thanksgiving to God is fundamental to a believer because it is the only means of communicating with God which is inclusive of worship, prayer, faith, holiness, giving and sacrifice.
