Sermon Text

John 4:27–45 ESV
27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him. 31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work. 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.” 39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.” 43 After the two days he departed for Galilee. 44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.) 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.

Introduction

Last week, we covered verses 1 to 27 of chapter 4.
One of the things we covered was the origins of the Samaritans.
We did this because Jesus would travel through Samaria, He spoke with a Samaritan woman and Samaritans would hear about Jesus.

Their origins stem from the captivity of the northern kingdom under Assyria in 721 BC. Jews of the northern kingdom intermarried with Assyrians after the captivity and produced the half-Jewish, half-Gentile Samaritan people who we now know as the Samaritans.Their practices were considered impure and their faith was labeled as a pagan religion. They are first mentioned in the Bible during the time of Nehemiah when the rebuilding of Jerusalem was taking place after the Babylonian captivity. We see this in Ezra and in the book of Nehemiah. The Samaritans held to the belief that they were the keepers of the Torah. They believed that they were the true descendants of Israel. Specifically from the tribes of Ephraim and Manasseh. They had a unique copy of the Pentateuch (the first five books of Moses). And they believed that they alone practiced the purest form of the Mosaic religion. They also thought of the Jerusalem temple and the Levitical priesthood as illegitimate and so they established their primary place of worship at the site of Mount Gerizim. They were avoided and seen as an impure people. That is why in the Jews there sought to offend Jesus by calling Him a demon possessed Samaritan. Which was suggesting that he was a half breed only. Accusing his mother of unfaithfulness and calling him demon possessed which showed you their feelings about Samaritans. This also brings to light Jesus’ use of the parable of the Good Samaritan which would have been extremely offensive. So Jesus traveled in a land that was considered to be full of unclean people.

They also thought of the Jerusalem temple and the Levitical priesthood as illegitimate and so they established their primary place of worship at the site of Mount Gerizim.
The Jews viewed them as an impure people.
We saw in , the Jews sought to offend Jesus by calling Him a demon possessed Samaritan.
The parable of the Good Samaritan would have been extremely offensive because of how they viewed the Samaritans who weren’t considered neighbors.
Jesus traveled through Samaria and there He spoke to a Samaritan women at the well.
In verses 7-10, we saw the woman being spoken to by Jesus.
He was evangelizing here and He was showing her, her need for salvation.
Verse 10 of chapter 4 Jesus reveals two things about her.
John 4:10 ESV
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”
First, Jesus in speaking with the woman asked her if she knew of the gift of God.
In , we saw that the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ.
And in , we saw that being saved by grace through faith is a Gift of God.
She didn’t have this. Therefore she didn’t know (couldn’t) who Jesus was.
Second, Jesus in speaking with the woman asked her if she knew of the gift of God “and who it is that is saying to you.”
Her not knowing who Jesus was showed us her condition.
She did not have grace and she did not have a saving knowledge of Jesus. Therefore she did not have living water. Which was the Holy Spirit.
Not kn
John 4:24 ESV
24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”
When one has living water (the Holy Spirit) and a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ (the truth) they can worship God. And it is those whom God seeks to worship Him.
She didn’t have this, the Samaritans didn’t have this and so Jesus began to show them what they needed in order to be true worshippers.
Jesus told the woman at the well of what she didn’t have and at the end of the conversation He revealed that He was the Messiah promised.
The Samaritan women was moved to the point that she would go and share what she had heard. Which is what our text is about today.

1. Coming to Jesus (v.27-30)

John 4:27–29 ESV
27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”
John 4:27–30 ESV
27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?” 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?” 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

Verse 27 Just then his disciples came back. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, “What do you seek?” or, “Why are you talking with her?”

In verse 27, we see that the disciples came back from buying food in the city there.
They marveled because of Jesus talking with the woman there.
To be marveled meant that they were astonished that Jesus was talking to a woman. Especially, a Samaritan women. But they didn’t say anything to Jesus.
What is amazing is the timing. His conversation was timely to the arrival of the disciples who would have probably interrupted them.

Verse 28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,

After their conversation the disciples arrived to the women leaving into town.
What is amazing is that the women went to the well to get water, but after hearing what Jesus said about Himself, she left her water jar there.
It says in verse 28, “So the woman left her water jar and went away into town”
John 4:28 ESV
28 So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people,
More urgent than her need for the water in the well was the need to go and tell others what Jesus said to her.
This is exactly what happens to us.
She was given simply the truth of who Jesus was.
The gospel is not about God and...
The gospel is about God!
It is about the gift He gives which is grace!
It’s about the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. The One who was raised from the dead.
It is about the Holy Spirit who regenerates and saves us from our thirst. Namely, our never-ending thirst for sin.
That’s really what Jesus exposed here. He revealed a thirst, not for God, but for sin. The women had five husbands and the one she was with was not her husband.
She was thirsty. But for sin. And this is the condition of every person without the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ which can only be escaped by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
I remember when I first came to Christ.
I wanted everyone to know of the profound love of God.
I shared the gospel and sought my friends to hear what has been given to me.
Sadly, many have lost this zeal. This women did not. She left to the town and said,

Verse 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”

John 4:29 ESV
29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”

Verse 29 “Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?”

Verse 30 They went out of the town and were coming to him.

The result of her sharing was that they went out of the town and were now coming to Him.
The sharing of the gospel preceded them coming to Jesus Christ.
The gospel is an invitation to come to Jesus and we see that those who were considered outsiders and unclean, came to Jesus because of the testimony of the women.
Notice that it wasn’t the testimony of the woman herself. It was what Jesus said about Himself to the woman.
Our testimonies do not save. Only the testimony of who Jesus is.
As Jesus told the woman of her need for living water, He would tell His disciples of food that they themselves did not know of.
It is who Jesus is and how He saves
As Jesus told the woman of her need for living water, He would tell His disciples of food that they themselves did not know of.

2. The food of Jesus (v.31-34)

Read
John 4:31–34 ESV
31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.” 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?” 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Verse 31 Meanwhile the disciples were urging him, saying, “Rabbi, eat.”

We can’t forget that Jesus was according to verse 6 of chapter 4, wearied.

Verse 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”

Which meant that Jesus was fatigued and worn out.
Maybe that is why the disciples were urging him to eat.
But just as with the Samaritan women and Nicodemus with the need to be born again, Jesus told them of something they did not know of.

Verse 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”

Read verse 32
John 4:32 ESV
32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”

Verse 32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you do not know about.”

Their reaction was no different from Nicodemus and the Samaritan women at the well.

Verse 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”

Nicodemus said in ,
John 3:4 ESV
4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
The Samaritan women said in
John 4:15 ESV
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water, so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.”

Verse 33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”

The disciples said in verse 33,
John 4:33 ESV
33 So the disciples said to one another, “Has anyone brought him something to eat?”
Remember why John was written.
John 20:30–31 ESV
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

God is showing us what it looks like not to believe.

When one does not have a genuine belief in Jesus Christ they only have desires and wants for this life only.

When one does not have a genuine belief in Jesus Christ they respond to what Jesus is speaking of eternal things was met with the earthy and temporal in mind
When one does not have a genuine belief in Jesus Christ they cannot see their need for being born again and for grace
One
When one does not have a genuine belief in Jesus Christ they are left with pursuits that are temporal and worldly
When one does not have a genuine belief in Jesus Christ they do not long for the eternal but are left with thirst and hunger for things other than God
Not having a saving faith in Christ leaves one to their own appetites and desires
That is why the gospel must be shared because it shows us our sin and our need for a Savior.
It shows us that we are not in the will of God and that we do not want the will of God.
Question: The living water is the Holy Spirit who gives us the means to worship God favorably. But what is the food that Jesus is speaking of here?

Verse 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Read verse 34,
John 4:34 ESV
34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Verse 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Verse 34 Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.

Question: Remember when Moses said something similar in 8:3?
Deuteronomy 8:3 ESV
3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 4:34 ESV
34 Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?
The water and food that Jesus had was enough which was the will of God.
This was enough. So much that even when He was terribly tired and worn out, He was full.
He didn’t rush to get water and even when the disciples urged Him to eat, He thought it more important to tell others of their need for what He had.
The will of the Father was His food.
It satisfied Him
It quenched His thirst
It was what He longed for
This should be the Christian!
Obedience and dependance upon God has to be what makes the Christian full. So much that earthly and carnal desires are no comparison.
The purpose of this gospel and the will of God are the same!
The purpose is so that one would believe!
Read John 6:38-40,
John 6:38–40 ESV
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. 39 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
The purpose of this book is so that one would believe!
The will of God is:
that Christ shall lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day
that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.
40 For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”
Question: Is this your preoccupation and joy?
Question: Is it to see the Lord Jesus exalted in the salvation of His people?
This satisfied Jesus to the point of giving this truth first over His need for water and food.
Here, we see Jesus working even though He was weary.

3. The work of Jesus (v.35-38)

Read John 4:35-38
John 4:35–38 ESV
35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest. 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together. 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’ 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

Verse 35 Do you not say, ‘There are yet four months, then comes the harvest’? Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.

Jesus uses the example of being able to know when the harvest is ready.

Crops were planted in Nov., and by Dec. or Jan. the grain would be sprouting up in vibrant green color.

Crops would be planted around November and by January the grain would be sprouting and would be ready for harvest.
Jesus knew that by talking to the woman at the well and revealing Himself as the Messiah, He knew that she would go and tell people in town.
Jesus is telling His disciples to look at the fields. Meaning look at the Samaritans who would believe! Which is a work of God!
We are again seeing how one comes to faith.
One comes to faith by hearing and believing in the truth of Jesus Christ! This is what they were hearing.
What is amazing about this is that God calls us to join Him. So much that we would also rejoice!

Verse 36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

Read verse 46,
John 4:36 ESV
36 Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life, so that sower and reaper may rejoice together.

Verse 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’

Notice in verse 36.

First, the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit

Verse 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’

Question: Who is the one who is reaping here in our text?
Answer: Verse 36 starts with “already.”
Already the one who reaps is receiving wages and gathering fruit for eternal life.

Jesus said in , “Look, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and see that the fields are white for harvest.”
He was speaking of the Samaritans coming to faith which happened because of Jesus initiating the conversation with the woman at the well and revealing Himself as the One promised.
Jesus initiated the conversation with the woman at the well.

He tells her that He is the Messiah and she goes and tells the town about Him.

Then in verse 30 they went out of the town and were coming to him.

This is Jesus gathering fruit. He is the one who sowed here and He was the One who would reap.
Jesus gets the credit for the harvest which simply means that He alone gets the glory for anyone who comes to faith because it is a work of God alone.
What is amazing is that we are called to work in His field also.
And the way we work is sharing the gospel as did the woman at the well.
We are called to share. But also we are called to rejoice.
That is why we rejoice with Him!

Second, when the reaper gathers, both the sower and reaper rejoice together

Paul understood this when He addressed divisions in the church of Corinth.
1 Corinthians 3:5–9 ESV
5 What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. 9 For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building.
We are God’s fellow workers who should rejoice over the work He does in regeneration.
God’s role in the harvest is the work of regeneration and election.
Our role is to simply to plant and water while God gives the growth. And to rejoice over the work He does in people’s lives.

Verse 37 For here the saying holds true, ‘One sows and another reaps.’

In the example of the Samaritans here, Jesus was the One who sowed and reaped.
He sowed the truth of who He was and now He would see the Samaritans believe!
What He does then is invite the disciples to enjoy gathering with Him those who come to saving faith!
This was an invitation to rejoice!
Question: When was the last time you rejoiced over the work of God in the lives of His people?
Question: Don’t you think that this is one of the reasons we gather together?
Question: To see the work of God in the lives of His people?
Read
John 4:38 ESV
38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

Verse 38 I sent you to reap that for which you did not labor. Others have labored, and you have entered into their labor.”

This may have included the work of the prophets before as some commentators pointed out. But in context I believe Jesus is speaking about the work He did while at the well.
Which is the work of sharing the truth about Himself, which is the work of coming to saving faith!

4. Belief in Jesus (v.39-42)

John 4:39–42 ESV
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 And many more believed because of his word. 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

Verse 39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”

Notice the cause of belief. It was the woman’s testimony about Jesus.
Verse 39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony.
John 4:39 ESV
39 Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, “He told me all that I ever did.”
Question: What was the woman’s testimony?
Answer: Verse 39 “He told me all that I ever did.” In other words, it was that He proved Himself to be the Messiah promised!
A genuine saving faith in Jesus Christ as who He said He was, saves!
The word, the testimony of Jesus Christ when believed, saves!
That is why we share the gospel! Because in believing it someone comes to salvation because of it!
Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of what Jesus said about Himself to the woman.

Verse 40 So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.

Jesus was asked by the Samaritans to stay with them and verse 40 says He stayed there for two days!
He stayed with those who were considered unclean, outsiders and unfit for fellowship.
But they were those in whom God called to come to Jesus and believe.
Read verse 41,
John 4:41 ESV
41 And many more believed because of his word.

Verse 41 And many more believed because of his word.

Many Samaritans believed and verse 41 tells us that many more believed because of His word.
This is the harvest. That people would come to saving faith!
This is what we should rejoice over!
2 Timothy 4:5 ESV
5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

Verse 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

I believe it is every Christian’s duty and desire to do the work of an evangelist.
It doesn’t mean we are an evangelist but that we should do the work of one and we are all called to rejoice because of it!
Read
John 4:42 ESV
42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

Verse 42 They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

The amazing result of the gospel when grace is given by God to understand and believe is the salvation of a soul!
They went from hearing the woman’s testimony to believing in Jesus Christ.
And they went from hearing and believing to knowing that Jesus was indeed the Savior of the world.
Question: When was the last time you rejoiced over the work of God in salvation?
Question: Have we lost the zeal and passion of God’s word?
Question: Do we share convinced that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation?
They said to the woman, “It is no longer because of what you said that we believe, for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.”

5. Conclusion (v.43-45)

Verse 43 After the two days he departed for Galilee.

Verse 44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)

Read
John 4:44 ESV
44 (For Jesus himself had testified that a prophet has no honor in his own hometown.)
Jesus says this in the other gospels about Himself.
In , and , we see that He wasn’t received there. And it was because of their unbelief.
In , the same
Their unbelief in these passages was proven in what they said about Jesus.
Himself. Meyer: “Not only other people in reference to Him. For the matter itself, comp. ; ; .”
Example, .
Mark 6:3 ESV
3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.
They took offense because they did not believe in the truth of Jesus as the Son of God. There were those in Judea who did not believe in the Messiah sent by God to take away the sins of the world!
John Peter Lange and Philip Schaff, A Commentary on the Holy Scriptures: John (Bellingham, WA: Logos Bible Software, 2008), 172.

Verse 45 So when he came to Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him, having seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the feast. For they too had gone to the feast.

The Samaritans came to Him.

the Galileans

The Galileans welcomed Him.
But His own rejected Him. Why? Because they did not believe!
That is why we share the gospel. To see people come to saving faith in Christ!
