Introduction

We come to chapter 12 today and things are intensifying and about what we are know about the prophetic nature of the future and what God is doing with the coming of the Messiah.
So lets get started
Zechariah 12:1–3 ESV
1 The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him: 2 “Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. 3 On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.
So right off the bat, verse 1 tell us the Lord is speaking, it is word of prophecy from the Lord himself and as a further evidence, the Lord described His work of creation.
He formed the heavens, the earth and man as well, even breathing into him and making him a living soul. How great is our God.
Verse 2. This verse is interesting, he says that he is about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering … it describes a cup of wine that because of its alcoholic state will cause people to be drunk, staggering. The surrounding nations will become like a stumbling man, a drunken man,
Listen to
Jeremiah 25:15–16 ESV
15 Thus the Lord, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. 16 They shall drink and stagger and be crazed because of the sword that I am sending among them.”
The seige of Jerusalem will also be against Judah… The nation Judah will also share the invasion of Jerusalem.
The idea here is that some of the citizens of Judah are forced to participate in the seige of Jerusalem by the enemy.
And finally here in this first section, verse 3
Zechariah begins with the thought, on that day…refers to the day when they will become a cup of staggering, the day of God’s judgment.
The heavy stone refers to a test of strength that the youth of the Palestine area often participated in, a heavy stone was the test, could they lift it.
The rock of offense, will be the savior, the Messiah and people will be broken as will the Antichrist, nothing can with stand the Lord himself.
Verses 4-5
Verses 4-5
Zechariah 12:4–5 ESV
4 On that day, declares the Lord, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness. 5 Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.’
So on the day the Lord has determined, the day with the staggering drink.. the Lord says He will do ....
Zech 12
strike every horse with panic… speaks to the idea of making them unable to ride into battle, they are uncontrollable. Horses are always a symbol of strength and power, but no more and all of this is rendered to Israel;s enemies. madness, blindness, confusion are curses that God will place upon the enemies of Israel.
and verse 5 God has chosen Jerusalem, they are the city of His affection. The clans will have God’s power and protection during this time. The Lord loves his people.
Verse 6
Zechariah 12:6 ESV
6 “On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem.
The blazing pot, speaks to a cooking vessel, or it could be a basin for water. But in the case of this pot it is filled with hot coals, coals that would burn the surrounding wood.
The picture takes us back to , verses 1-3 where the trees representing the kings are burned with fire. The flaming torch would burn the dry grain, it is a symbol of the Lord’s power and His ability to devour the enemies of the Lord and his people.
Even in the future days, the Lord will devour His enemies and those of his people as well
The Lord has said something to this fact to Zechariah already in chapter 5 verse 14,
Now lets move forward to verses 7-9
Zechariah 12:7–9 ESV
7 “And the Lord will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah. 8 On that day the Lord will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the Lord, going before them. 9 And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
The Lord will grant salvation first to the towns and villages that are around jerusalem in the country of Judah first. And it seems right because they were the first to be affected by the enemies of the Lord first.
it is some of them who have been forced to serve the enemies while jerusalem was being invaded and attacked.
This action will also demonstrate that the battle is the Lord’s and it is not won by military might and strength.
Verse 8 says that on that day, you keep hearing the mention of this and how the Lord will work on he day of his salvation. The Lord will make the even the feeblest of the people will be like King David and will be made strong and mighty.
Listen to
Isaiah 60:22 ESV
22 The least one shall become a clan, and the smallest one a mighty nation; I am the Lord; in its time I will hasten it.
The angel of the Lord going before them speaks to Messiah. The Messiah will be the strength of this people.
The angel of the Lord going before them speaks to
And if you consider a future time look, The Savior of the World, Jesus will defeat all the enemies of HIs people.
and verse 9 proclaims that the Lord will seek to destroy those who are against the Lord’s people, the push is again looking at the future… on that day.
Now lets look at the last section, look at verses 10-14
Zechariah 12:10–14 ESV
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn. 11 On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-rimmon in the plain of Megiddo. 12 The land shall mourn, each family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves; 14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves.
Verse 10 God’s favor, given freely and wonderfully will be given to his people, to His nation. he will pour this out freely upon the Lord’s people. He will act to save Israel. This was prophesied by other prophets as well.
Joel 2:28–32 ESV
28 “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even on the male and female servants in those days I will pour out my Spirit. 30 “And I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. 32 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
Ezekiel 39:29 ESV
29 And I will not hide my face anymore from them, when I pour out my Spirit upon the house of Israel, declares the Lord God.”
but then the second portion of verse 10 speaks to the one whom they pierced, we know without a doubt who that refers too, it speaks to Jesus.
When they see Jesus on this day they will lament for they crucified the son of God. The future generations on that day will know the wrong their ancestors committed and they will mourn for they understand their guilt.
Romans 11:25–27 ESV
25 Lest you be wise in your own sight, I do not want you to be unaware of this mystery, brothers: a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. 26 And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, “The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob”; 27 “and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.”
Verse 11 says their mourning will be likened to the death of their righteousness King Josiah, on the plain of Megiddo. This event was in 609 BC, and he was the last godly king of judah.
We see this event listed in ....
Verse 12-13
Zechariah 12:12 ESV
12 The land shall mourn, each family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves;
Zechariah 12:12–13 ESV
12 The land shall mourn, each family by itself: the family of the house of David by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the house of Nathan by itself, and their wives by themselves; 13 the family of the house of Levi by itself, and their wives by themselves; the family of the Shimeites by itself, and their wives by themselves;
speaks to
You see the lines of the kings, royal lines and the levitical lines as well, each family shall mourn for the way their evil generations acted, not allthe kings and not all the priests were good and righteous.. some were evil.
Verse 14
Zechariah 12:14 ESV
14 and all the families that are left, each by itself, and their wives by themselves.
They are mourning, they are repentant, as they see Jesus… from the least to the greatest…
They will know who jesus is will be humbled in HIs presence.
