Who is the Holy Spirit?
1.
He is my inner voice.
He is that small voice inside your head that tries to get you not to do some of the things you do and then tries to get you to do the right things.
2.
He is my teacher.
When Jesus was here on earth, many called him Rabbi = teacher.
He spend a lot of time with his disciples teaching them the truths of God and the scriptures.
He was developing them as pastors, teachers and leaders.
Can you imagine what it would have been like to actually have been with Jesus while he was teaching his disciples?
Pretty Awesome.
Obviously, we can’t have that moment again, but we can have that experience because the Holy Spirit teaches us.
HS teaches us the scriptures.
He reminds us of everything Jesus taught.
He is not saying that you should nor read commentaries and listen to teaching.
He is saying that HS will use all of that to teach us.
But we get to learn from Jesus’ Spirit, the HS.
The Holy Spirit is active in our lives when we are reading scripture, praying, listening to sermons, and worshipping…all the time.
If you will invite him to, he will constantly teach and develop us into the people he wants us to be.
3.
He is my Guide.
HS is our guide.
He guides us as to what decisions to make or not make.
If we will let him, HS will guide our lives.
It’s like having a built in GPS to steer us where we need to go.
He will direct every step God wants us to take.
I don’t know about you, but I need that.
Many times, I have found myself at an exit or crossroads where I have to make a decision… I need God to direct or guide me.
In those moments, the HS is ready, willing and able to guide me on the path that God wants me to take.
4.
He is my friend.
This is amazing.
he is actually my friend… yours too.
We are friends with God.
You may be blown away by this because many of us have been taught that God is so set apart, and he is, but he is also with us where we are.
He wants to be our best friend.
When we have an intimate friendship with the Holy Spirit we are never alone.
In the best moments of our lives He is cheering us on…in the hardest moments He comforts us.
What an amazing promise!
The Holy Spirit is our teacher, our guide, and our best friend!
I hope these three truths will help you understand the Holy Spirit and maybe for some of you clear up some confusion you have had for a long time.
More than anything I hope that this lesson and small group time will encourage you to ENGAGE the Holy Spirit in your life.
To go on your own journey of discovery!
He will be faithful every step of the way!
The Holy Spirit in Me
1. Holy Spirit show me.
The heart of this prayer is ...
This prayer was David’s way of inviting the Spirit of God into his life and giving him permission to expose areas where he had gone astray and give him the direction in which he should live.
We need that very same thing…ask the Holy Spirit every single day to operate in your life and you will begin to hear His voice and follow his lead
“Holy Spirit change me.”
2. Holy Sprit change me.
When we are saved our sins are forgiven and we receive the grace of God…all through the incredible sacrifice of Jesus.
What an incredible gift!
But what you will find out (and if you have been a Christian long you will agree) that even though our sins have been forgiven we still face temptation every single day!
So often we end up struggling with many of the same things we faced before we knew God!
It doesn’t have to be that way!
No Christian is perfect and we all need the grace of God but 2 Corinthians says that if we invite the Spirit into our lives we can have POWER!
Power to overcome temptations, to overcome sin in our lives… Power to live in freedom.
3. Holy Spirit Fill me.
Our access to the Holy Spirit can only come from salvation through Jesus Christ.
When we are saved receive the Holy Spirit but even so we face a daily decision to give control of our lives to the Holy Spirit!
We are commanded to be filled with HS.
They knew what I have come to find out…that this world and our enemy will never relent in his attempts to pull us away from God.
To try and get us to depend on something other than God.
Our response to this battle determines our experience with God!
By asking the Holy Spirit to fill us each and every day we keep our lives pointed towards God and dependent on Him!
We keep our life in God’s hands!
Holy Spirit show me, change me, and fill me!
Being filled with the Holy Spirit doesn’t make me better than you, it makes me better than me.
Never forget that God loves you and anything he has for us is GOOD!
Pursue the Holy Spirit and God will reveal just how beautiful a relationship with Him can be.
Before I send you into your group time let me pray for you….
Small Group time
What have you believed about the Holy Spirit?
Where do you think that came from?
Have you ever had an encounter with the Holy Spirit where he convicted you or guided you to action?
Did you feel a signal from God or hear his still small voice?
Did you listen and do what the Holy Spirit was leading you to do?
Did hearing about who the Holy Spirit is change how you think about Him?
If so, how will that new perspective change how you make decisions in the future?
How could you grow in your relationship with the Holy Spirit?
As a Christian, the Holy Spirit has given you gifts of the Spirit to use.
Discuss the spiritual gifts you have.
