A. New Covenant Better than the Old (8:1-13)
1. Jesus’ Heavenly Priesthood Shows He is Mediator of a Better Covenant (8:1-6)
2. Prophecy of New Covenant Shows the Weakness of Old Covenant (8:7-13)
I. We Have a High Priest in Heaven (8:1)
Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
> Of importance- we see Jesus is at the Throne of God, for He is God. What is He doing? We begin that He is in the heavens at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty. (Keep that in mind)
1 Now the main point in what has been said is this: we have such a high priest, who has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,
II. The Place of Christ’s Ministry is an heavenly sanctuary (8:2)
a minister in the sanctuary and in the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, not man.
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
who does not need daily, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did once for all when He offered up Himself.
III. Jesus Cannot Minister on the Earth (8:4)
Now if He were on earth, He would not be a priest at all, since there are those who offer the gifts according to the Law;
IV . The Earthly Tabernacle is a Copy of the Heavenly (8:5)
who serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, just as Moses was warned by God when he was about to erect the tabernacle; for, “See,” He says, “that you make all things according to the pattern which was shown you on the mountain.”
“According to all that I am going to show you, as the pattern of the tabernacle and the pattern of all its furniture, just so you shall construct it.
“Then you shall erect the tabernacle according to its plan which you have been shown in the mountain.
“You shall make it hollow with planks; as it was shown to you in the mountain, so they shall make it.
F.F. Bruce: The tabernacle was intended to serve as a dwelling-place for God in the midst of his people on earth, and it would be completely in keeping with current practice that such an earthly dwelling-place should be a replica of God’s heavenly dwelling-place.
1. God was teaching them of their need of a mediator.
2. We Worship God on His Terms not ours
3. If We Worship God on Our Terms Then We Make Him a god of our Imagination
Point 2:
1689: 1689 Confession:
1689 Confession:
1. (1689) The light of nature shows that there is a God, who has lordship and sovereignty over all; is just, good and does good unto all; and is therefore to be feared, loved, praised, called upon, trusted in, and served, with all the heart and all the soul, and with all the might. But the acceptable way of worshipping the true God, is instituted by Himself, and so limited by His own revealed will, that He may not be worshipped according to the imagination and devices of men, nor the suggestions of Satan, under any visible representations, or any other way not prescribed in the Holy Scriptures.
2. (1689) Religious worship is to be given to God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and to Him alone; not to angels, saints, or any other creatures; and since the fall, not without a mediator, nor in the mediation of any other but Christ alone.
(1689) 5. The reading of the Scriptures, preaching, and hearing the Word of God, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in our hearts to the Lord; as also the administration of baptism, and the Lord’s supper, are all parts of religious worship of God, to be performed in obedience to Him, with understanding, faith, reverence, and godly fear; moreover, solemn humiliation, with fastings, and thanksgivings, upon special occasions, ought to be used in an holy and religious manner
