What is he saying?

John is writing to ones who are dear to him. He is encouraging them by giving them assurance.

Why is he saying this?

John is saying this because he wants to give them security, in their standing with the Father, because of the insecurity that has arisen due to the secessionists.
Why would John identify these things about these three addresses? Practically, they had stayed the course when the secessionist had withdrawn and cast doubt upon Jesus. Personally, they needed assurance that what they had believed was true. Corporately, they needed to be able to clearly identify those who were truly in relationship with the Father and those who were not.

What is the point?

Security can only be found in the finished work of one person.

How does it apply to being a fundamental Christian?

(1) Forgiveness [because of the substitutionary atonement) frees us from insecurities caused by other professing Christians (v. 12)

(App:) [a biblically, fundamental Christian] Doesn’t need to get their pound of flesh (v. 12) for security.

(2) Assurance in the divinity of Jesus Christ frees us from insecurities caused by the words of others (v. 13a)

(App:) [a biblically, fundamental Christian] Don’t need to be skeptical when ancient truths are freshly understood.

(3) Security in the finished work of Jesus over Satan frees us from the bondage of potential defeat caused by the detractors. (v. 13b)

(App:) [a biblically, fundamental Christian] Doesn’t live in hyper-anxiousness about loss.

(4) Relationship with the Father frees us from the insecurities of broken relationships (v. 14) - ,

(App:) [a biblically, fundamental Christian] Doesn’t need to gain security by seeking a following of people.

(5) Assurance of victory is because of the remaining, active, inerrant logos within us. (v. 14)

Young men, you are wondering of the word is in you? (, ).
I am writing to you to assure you that you are strong by God’s word that abides in you -- not by any effort of your own. It is this faith that has led to your victory over Satan.
(App:) [a biblically, fundamental Christian] Doesn’t rest in the past alone.

A biblically, fundamental Christian:

Positive Applications:

(1) Unbelievers, the kind of rest you find in Christ is exclusive to Jesus. Come to Jesus today!
As if they are owed a debt…because they’ve been graciously, mercifully forgiven.

(2) Christian adults, because your daily activities have a way of distracting you from where you identity lies, it is critical that you rest in the ONE you have known!
(3) Teenagers/Young Adults, because you are a victor in Christ, you can live victoriously by faith in the eternal logos.
(2)
(4) Children, God only forgives people who believe on Jesus Christ.
(5) antichrist(s), repent of your sinful rebellion against Jesus. Confess him as Lord.
