Romans
Paul has already went to great lengths to establish this, but he says it again.
Both Jews and Greek are all under sin.
Paul does this quite often.
Greeks are Gentiles.
He speaks of one Gentile nation to refer to the whole of Gentiles.
The point is this.
Regardless of ethnic heritage, the problem is the same.
Sin.
Law Breakage.
And he goes on to quote from seven Old Testament passages that tell us this.
Righteous.
What does that mean?
God’s definition of righteous and our definition are often different.
Our definition is often skewed because we have the tendency toward horizontal comparison.
I’m good compared to that person.
But God’s definition of righteous is related to his own holiness.
How do you stack to him?
In that regard, there is NONE righteous, not even one.
This speaks of our sin nature.
In our human nature, we do not understand.
We do not seek for God.
Its not in our nature to do so.
The natural thing for us to do is to chase our way.
To do what we want to do.
Following Christ is not a natural thing.
Following Christ involves self denial.
This is why some people don’t seem to care about the realities of Scripture.
Have you ever looked at someone and wondered why it is they have no desire?
Its because they are living as natural men and women who according to their nature do not accept the things of God.
They don’t seek for God.
Thats what Scripture says.
Thats why we must pray that God will penetrate their hearts.
That he will draw them to faith in Christ.
This passage should erase our idea of “good” people.
They are good people.
They may do things that we would call good and humanitarian, but God would not.
“Only the good die young?”
That only happened once.
We have to do a better job with articulating this.
This is biblical.
Human goodness does not equate to divine perfection.
We need Christ.
Paul goes on.
Romans 3:13
The whole of the sinful man is corrupt.
The throat, the tongue, the lips, the mouth, the feet, their eyes.
Everything contributes to evil.
and worst of all
We are completely and totally sinful, corrupt, wicked depraved.
Every person disqualified.
Their mouths shut.
No one has the ability to plead their case successfully.
By the works of Law, no flesh will be justified.
Justified- made righteous by God.
The Law doesn’t provide the remedy, it shoes the problem.
Its like a Mirror.
And again, as I said this morning, if all we had was the Law, we’d be in trouble.
BUT Christ.
Witnessed by the prophets… The idea of righteousness through faith was not a foreign idea to the Old Testament.
is all about this.
Righteousness is achieved through faith.
No distinction with sin, and no distinction with regard to faith.
Salvation comes through faith in Christ.
