The motivation - Jesus’ prayer life encouraged His disciples to want to learn to pray

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.”

Jesus prayed often and faithfully

And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed.

And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.
Before any distractions
Beyond any eyes
He modeled what He taught

5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Jesus’ prayed faithfully

And after he had taken leave of them, he went up on the mountain to pray.

And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed,

Jesus’ prayer life encouraged others to pray

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, “When you pray, say:

“Father, hallowed be your name.

Your kingdom come.

3  Give us each day our daily bread,

4  and forgive us our sins,

for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

And lead us not into temptation.”

Luke 11:1 NKJV
Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”
Luke 11:
Jesus had certain places designated for prayer
Jesus

And he came out and went, as was his custom, to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 And when he came to the place, he said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed,

Jesus commanded prayer

And he told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart.

The Model - Jesus’ instructions gives us a model to follow

Jesus gives to two attributes to avoid in prayer
PRIDE which leads to a desire to impress others with our prayers when we should be desiring intimacy with our Father
Matthew 6:5 NKJV
“And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

Pride is clearly detected by God producing empty prayers
Matthew 15:8 NKJV
‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.
Pride reaps its goal the applause of men
However pride should be replaced with humility

9 He also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and treated others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his house justified, rather than the other. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Private prayer gives us time alone with God
Removing from outside distractions
Seeking a one on one conversation with the Father
Prayers that are honest and sincere
Private prayer gains God’s listening ear and answers to our prayers according to the will of God
God looks inside that’s why we should always ask God to examine our hearts and be ready to repent

42 saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

23  Search me, O God, and know my heart!

Try me and know my thoughts!

24  And see if there be any grievous way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting!

12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.

14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

WORDINESS which we believe impresses God

7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

There is no substance to our words
They might be eloquent and impressive but God is viewing the heart of the mouth that speaks these words
Prayer is not about how many words we can use
Matthew 6:7 NKJV
And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.
God’s all-knowing attribute eliminates the need for wordy prayers
They might be eloquent and impressive but God is viewing the heart of the mouth that speaks these words
For both pride and wordiness we need to remember God looks inside that’s why we should always ask God to examine our hearts and be ready to repent

23  Search me, O God, and know my heart!

Try me and know my thoughts!

24  And see if there be any grievous way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting!

Prayer is being alone with God
Matthew 6:6 NKJV
But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.
Matthew 6:
Removing from outside distractions
Seeking a one on one conversation with the Father
Prayer is a reminder of the omniscience of God
Prayer is not about how many words we can use
Prayer is about mouthing to God what He already knows
God seeing us is more important than others seeing us
God knows the reason we pray
Jesus gives the content of prayer

Public prayer

9 Pray then like this:

“Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name.

10  Your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11  Give us this day our daily bread,

12  and forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13  And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.
