Why Aren’t Christians Like Jesus?
Story –
Moses swore.
I grew up in the Adventist Church, left, came back 5-6 years later. Coming back in, work one day, old guy. So slow. Blamed it on me. I was outraged and I just let this guy have it. You can imagine the sorts of words that came out of my mouth.
Everyone was running around saying things like Moses swore! Moses swore. Now, for some – this probably doesn’t seem like such a deal, I mean here I am finding my feet as new Christian – so to speak – still trying to get my life together, and I had a bad day, lost my temper. Some of you aren’t too worried about the whole thing.
Others, however, may be sitting back thinking to themselves, “typical”. Typical Christian leader, messing up, finding themselves in hot water, revealing the true colours of this whole Christianity thing.
Some people may be sitting back thinking to themselves, like Ghandi did, if it wasn’t for the Christians, I would be interested in this whole Christianity thing!
Here’s what Mahatma Gandhi said –
“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”
If I’m honest, he does make a case. There are so many times in life when Christians aren’t like Jesus. The big questions is why? Why aren’t Christians like Jesus? In the New Testament scriptures, we have this beautiful picture of Jesus Christ. A Man who is filled with compassion, with grace, with mercy, a man of total moral character and integrity, but when we look around, we see Christians that just don’t seem to be cutting it. We see moral failures amongst high profile Christian leaders – character flaws. Throughout history, we see violence being invoked in the name of Christianity, we see fanaticism among Christians, we see a group of people that claim to be “loving their neighbours” but it seems as if they have absolutely no regard for Social justice. For the people around the globe, some here in our own communities, that are struggling!

Christians - Why Aren’t they Like Jesus?
That’s the big question tonight. Tonight, we are going to answer this question in 4 sections.
1. We are going to talk about Character Flaws. Why is there so much of this going on?
2. Religion and Violence - Jesus said do unto others as you would have them do unto you, so what’s the go with religion and violence?
3. Fanaticism - why are so many Christians living in their own fanatical land?
4. Social Injustice - how come Christians often just don’t seem to care?
We are going to explore these areas and ask ourselves what’s happening with Christians? Let’s begin with Character Flaws.
1. Character Flaws –
2. Religion & Violence -
3. Fanatacism –
4. Social Injustice –
