Don’t Judge

Good morning! My name is Jason and I am one of the pastors here at Cowee. We are super excited that you are here this morning. Guests we welcome you! For those of you that have been with us for a few years, some of you remember that in  2017 we started a Series Called “Summer on the Mount”
Fall it turned to like “Harvest Season on the Hill”
Winter on the ridge…before we knew it Christmas was here! If you are new with us, the way we like to walk through scripture is verse by verse through books or sections of the scripture.
We are going to jump back into a place we stopped a season back… in the greatest sermon ever preached, preached by Jesus himself.
Most familiar verse for non Christians.  JUDGE NOT. Among young non-Christians, nine out of the top 12 perceptions of Christians were negative. Common negative perceptions include that present-day Christianity is judgmental (87%), hypocritical (85%)
IT is hypocritical self righteous condemning judgement that Jesus was warning against in this passage, not all judgement. I think HE would warn us of that same thing today…
Want to give us some fast context…
Jesus has been proclaiming the gospel of the Kingdom. Healing the sick…
Word is traveling fastmass email had gone out to the area…somebody put it on facebook -
News had traveled all the way to the Roman province of Syria…And Large Crowds have followed him from Galilee - From Decapolis - Ten Gentiles cities… Jerusalem. Judea… DIVERSE CROWD
Have you heard what he is saying???
Have you seen those he healed. The lame walk the sick are healed.
The worlds plan for a better way of living always falls short… but
2000 years ago there was a sermon preached.. Instructed us in A KINGDOM WAY OF LIVING> a better way…
Matthew 4:25 NASB95
Large crowds followed Him from Galilee and the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond the Jordan.
Saw the Crowds - went to the mountain… SAT DOWNThis meant something - in that day a rabbi or teacher who was going to teach and share would sit down… (natural ampith)
THE CROWDS KNOW HE IS GETTING READY TO TEACH… THE DISCIPLES CAME TO HIM…
My hope is that we could sit at the feet of Jesus… and soak in these truths. THAT we could read the words of Jesus as he teaches his disciples what it looks like to be a disciple. As he teaches them what it looks like to live as citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven… as part of Christ’s Kingdom!
He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
Jesus begins to teach his disciples
The message Jesus taught that day is meant for all of us as well. - For all of us who crown him KING today…
ONE IMPORTANT THINGS THAT WE MUST REMEMBER AS WE STUDY!
1- THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT REVEALS OUR NEED FOR THE GOSPEL - 1:21. Bear a son. Name Jesus. Save His People from sin. - Last several chapters… death -resurrection…
NOT SAYING DO THIS… AND YOU CAN BE SAVED. --
-read this and be like … really? NO WAY I CAN MEASURE UP… If this is what I have to do… I am sunk!
NO- Saying it is only through a changed heart that you can live this way…
ONLY THROUGH THE GOSPEL.
There is a better way. kingdom way. A new way of living right here in this world!
Contrasts the perspective of life as a Jesus follower with the hypocritical self righteousness of the pharisees.
They had a self-righteous, holier than th
Matthew 7:1 NASB95
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.
Jesus is the righteous judge.
Matthew 7:1 NASB95
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged.
John 5:22–23 NASB95
“For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son, so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
The will of the Father and of the son are in perfect harmony - judgement will be the same of that of the Father.
We are told to speak the truth in love.. this doesnt mean that we dont speak the truth. - Speak with a heart of restoration and not condemnation.
John 3:17 NASB95
“For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
John 5:22 NASB95
“For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,
Human standards, human understanding, human motives. Mess everything up.
Post modern world loves this verse, and mis-interpret it well. This is the rally cry of our world today. As long as a person is sincere about what they believe - don’t judge. We must be tolerant… Definition of tolerance has changed.
Your right and I am right. And we celebrate each other. The highest authority is me. NO judging.
Acts 17:31 NASB95
because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.”
In 2005 Adrian Rogers made this statement: today, the only sin in Americas is to call sin, sin.
AND HE WILL!
In 2005 Adrian Rogers made this statement: today, the only sin in Americas is to call sin, sin.
Jesus tells his followers to leave the sentencing to Him. AND HE WILL!
AND HE WILL!
2 Thessalonians 1:7–8 NASB95
and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
Jesus teaches judgement from a Kingdom perspective.
AND HE WILL!
Jesus teaches about judgement from a Kingdom perspective.
Matthew 7:1–2 NASB95
“Do not judge so that you will not be judged. “For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you.
And today, the only sin in Americas is to call sin, sin. ADrian Rogers 2005
Begins to cause us to look at ourselves. How do you want to be judged?
this week see… stop judging self - righteously.
Next week start loving.
Farmer that had a watermelon patch. Kids would get in there an get a watermelon and just cut it and eat it right there. Decided he would get them.

Found a sign that said - One of these watermelons has been poisoned.
Came back and found the sign with the one marked out and read - two of these watermelons are poisoned.
Judge” (krinō) - basic word with a wide range of meaning. - can imply to analyze or evaluate (to decide - look at a couple options two or more- Chocolate or vanilla) as well as to condemn or avenge.
jesus is clearly not saying forget all truth or morals. If you are growing as a disciple you are maturing in your faith and growing in the way you can make good decisions.
The former senses are clearly commanded of believers (e.g., ; ), but the latter are reserved for God. Even on those occasions when we render a negative evaluation of others, our purposes should be constructive and not retributive.
 Craig Blomberg
See in this passage, we are to distinguish between logs, hogs, and dogs.
Leviticus 19:17 NASB95
‘You shall not hate your fellow countryman in your heart; you may surely reprove your neighbor, but shall not incur sin because of him.
Matthew 7:3–4 NASB95
“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?
How often have we been critical of others shortcomings that have been made known, when in secret there may be far more serious shortcomings in our own life.
Been around people that are just waiting to be critical. They are hoping people will mess up. I read an illustration about an old codger who didn’t like Christians. And he heard the preacher was going to repair his roof so he went over to his house and pulled up a chair and just sat there and watched him. The pastor is nailing away. He says, “Friend did you come here to get some carpentry tips.” And the old codger said, “No. I am just waiting to see what you say when you that hammer hits your thumb.” He is waiting for him to mess up. And that is how people are a lot of times. They are waiting for us to slip up. Quick to jump to conclusions.
Love the Sinner, Hate the Sin.
Love the sinner, hate your sin. Mark Lowry
RUN TO THE CROSS! POINT OTHERS TO THE CROSS! LOVE people where THEY ARE! Love them too much to leave them that way…
Someone is in a mess… man… I understand that they may have a speck… realize I have a log…
Matthew 7:5 NASB95
“You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.
When you see the speck. Remember how much you need Jesus… Come dealing with your own sin… see clearly… to assist in speck removal… speck is removed delicately. Goal is not to gouge the persons eye out but to assist … to help…
Galatians 6:1 NASB95
Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
We see the speck easier than the log, because we are much more excited to see other people in a mess, than us. MAKES US FEEL BETTER ABOUT OURSELVES.
We can see the brokenness, but we do not condemn. Jesus doesnt condemn me! He loves me and gives me life through the power of the resurrection… Not that I come holier than thou… we come with our life changed by Jesus.
HOUSE OF JUDGEMENT - HOUSE OF PRAYER.
Because we know the log we had… we know the power of the Gospel… we know that God will work as we love our neighbor correctly.
God saves the worst… Paul -
He takes a long look at a man’s life…
He is the righteous judge, but took our place…
The beauty of the cross is that when Jesus went to Calvary, He did not just pay the price for our lusting, our lying, our cheating, or whatever sin that we do—He stood in our place. He took the holy hatred, holy judgment, and holy wrath of God that was not just due our sin but due us. Jesus stood in our place and He took it upon Himself. So let us be very careful not to lean on comfortable clichés that sound good to us and rob the cross of its power.
Jesus endured the penalty of sin and took the place of sinners. The essence of sin is that man substitutes himself for God. But the essence of salvation is that God substitutes Himself for man.
I come declaring… my life is so messed up that i needed someone else to live for me. To live through me.
Rather than condemning us, Jesus was condemned. He became sin so that I could become righteous through him.
