1 Samuel 19:1–7 NLT
Saul now urged his servants and his son Jonathan to assassinate David. But Jonathan, because of his strong affection for David, told him what his father was planning. “Tomorrow morning,” he warned him, “you must find a hiding place out in the fields. I’ll ask my father to go out there with me, and I’ll talk to him about you. Then I’ll tell you everything I can find out.” The next morning Jonathan spoke with his father about David, saying many good things about him. “The king must not sin against his servant David,” Jonathan said. “He’s never done anything to harm you. He has always helped you in any way he could. Have you forgotten about the time he risked his life to kill the Philistine giant and how the Lord brought a great victory to all Israel as a result? You were certainly happy about it then. Why should you murder an innocent man like David? There is no reason for it at all!” So Saul listened to Jonathan and vowed, “As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be killed.” Afterward Jonathan called David and told him what had happened. Then he brought David to Saul, and David served in the court as before.
Let’s Pray

Fortress - How to Find Refuge

Thick week - One thing I kept noticing - People are weary
people are weary,
Christians/Churches - Run to God! … Great… How?
What leads me to refuge in God’s presence
When you want to learn something well you look to the expert, our expert is David.
1 Samuel 19:1–7 NLT

But Jonathan, because of his strong affection for David, told him what his father was planning. “Tomorrow morning,” he warned him, “you must find a hiding place out in the fields. 1
This is a historical account of King David before he was King David.
David was in a situation that was incredibly uncomfortable.
David was:
David was a musician in the King’s court
Jonathan’s, King Saul’s son, best friend
Musician in the court of King Saul
Married to Saul’s Daughter
Saul’s most famous and celebrated Army General - This was the main point of contention
Married to Saul’s Daughter
David learned from this situation and many others:

Peace is not about Comfort

In the midst of this situation these are the words to David’s song he wrote:
Psalm 59:1–9 NLT
Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, Lord, though I have not sinned or offended them. I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me! O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, wake up and punish those hostile nations. Show no mercy to wicked traitors. Interlude They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords. “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer. But Lord, you laugh at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations. You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress.
David is brutally honest. He says what is in his heart.
David is brutally honest
There is no comfort in this situation, but David does not lose his confidence.
Peace is not about comfort, it’s about confidence.
Confidence is what brings about peace. “You are my strength”
Confidence is what brings about peace. “You are my strength”
Adi in the swimming pool - Confidence is built in embrace
David understood even being in the confined place of Saul’s court, he had a refuge...

Refuge is not a place

David knew that he had very little control over his circumstances.
Psalm 59:10 NLT
In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies.
Refuge is not a place
David knew that he had very little control over his circumstances.
We are blessed to live in a nation with the freedom we have
But our freedom has created an illusion of control.
When we become uncomfortable we change jobs, living situations, friends, churches, marriages...
Seeking a place of refuge… a place where everything is gonna be alright
Refuge is not a place, but an embrace.
Psalm 73:28 NLT
But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign Lord my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.
Psalm
The nearness of God is our fortress...
Not his blessings, not his benefits, not even his pardon… it’s Him
Psalm 59:10 NLT
In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies.
Psalm 59:
Psalm 59:9 NLT
You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress.
Ok, so how do we get there...
Psalm 59:14–17 NLT
My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied. But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love.
“Life’s the worst right now, but I will sing about You”
This is nuts and bolts of how to find refuge, to sing. Not just any singing.
Praise.

Praise postures for His Presence

Praise reminds us of Who are are to be confident in!
A lack of praise indicates a lack of confidence in the goodness of God!
Psalm 56:4 NLT
I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?
Psalm 35:10 NLT
With every bone in my body I will praise him: “Lord, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”
Praise postures our heart, it helps us remember the God who controls all things
Psalm 5:11 NLT
But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them sing joyful praises forever. Spread your protection over them, that all who love your name may be filled with joy.
Psalm 27:6 NLT
Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At his sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music.
Psalm 42:11 NLT
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again— my Savior and my God!

3  But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

Psalm 57:7 NLT
My heart is confident in you, O God; my heart is confident. No wonder I can sing your praises!

3  But thou art holy, O thou that inhabitest the praises of Israel.

Psalm 35:10 NLT
With every bone in my body I will praise him: “Lord, who can compare with you? Who else rescues the helpless from the strong? Who else protects the helpless and poor from those who rob them?”
Praise is the ground in which God pitches His tent.
You weary? Need refuge from life?
Praise God. Literally, Praise God.
