1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.
A simple life with only the necessities are better then the rich house that is full of fighting.
2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
2A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.
If a son can’t control himself the father will set a servant over him with the authority to hold him accountable.
Will be rewarded by the grateful father
3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.
Everything is tested
As the assayer test the purity of silver and gold, God tests the purity of our hearts.
4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.
The Message: Evil people relish malicious conversation; the ears of liars itch for dirty gossip.
Evil people relish malicious conversation; the ears of liars itch for dirty gossip.
the ears of liars itch for dirty gossip.
5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.
Criticize someone - criticize their Creator!
Happy at someones misfortune, you will be punished!
Ties to:
(KJV 1900) 40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.
(KJV 1900) 45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.
6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.
Love this verse- any grandparent understands the first half
The second is a little tricky!
NIV - parents are the pride of their children… WHAT? SINCE WHEN?!
MESS - Children take pride in their parents… NOT EVEN GOOD KIDS!
Define Glory:
Glory (כָּבוֹד, kavod, יְקָר, yeqar, δόξα, doxa). A key theological term in the Bible that features in God’s work of judgment, salvation, and blessing.
The Lexham Bible Dictionary
Sooo grandchildren are the joy of grandparents...
But the judgement, salvation and blessing of the children is the father!
7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.
Not good, even foolish for a fool to be eloquent
Worse for a leader to be be a lier
8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.
Many translate this as the NIV: A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn.
A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it;
My study shows something different… which is why you need to do more that look at different translations.
they think success will come at every turn.
Precious stone: Hebrew - “stone of grace”
Precious stone: Hebrew - “stone of grace” or offering of grace.
(KJV 1900) A man’s gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men.
16 A man’s gift maketh room for him,
9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.
And bringeth him before great men.
9He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth veryfriends.
Again, different translations make this something it is not.
This is not someone covering up sin to garner favor...
How do I know that?
Scripture interpits scripture!
(KJV 1900) 12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: But love covereth all sins.
12 Hatred stirreth up strifes:
But love covereth all sins.
This goes back to sons. How do you know your a son? You cover your dad’s weaknesses… Not hide them but protect him.
Also, verse 12 and 15 deals with rewarding evil for good...
So we know it can’t be about hiding the sin of another so he will love you!
But when you repeat the sin, you drive a wedge between long time friends!
10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.
11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.
Hard to get an evil man’s attention...
12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.
Ovoid a fool at all cost!
13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.
Stop wasting the water in the barrel… turn the spigot off before you get in trouble.
Stop an argument before it happens!
15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.
16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?
ESV: Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom when he has no sense?
Why should a fool have money in his hand to buy wisdom
17A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
when he has no sense?
Grandpa used to say, he has more dollars then sense.
17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
Note: To love does not mean to embrace all someone does - to disagree does not mean that you hate them
18A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
Last half has been said to mean, a friend loves you and your brother fights you...
Clearer translation - a brother is born for a time of adversity.
18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.
Only a fool cosigns
19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.
To love strife is to love sin
Brag about how strong you are and you will fail
20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.
A corrupt heart will not prosper
Remember your momma’s advice, “watch your mouth, son!”.
21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.
22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.
Happiness is good medicine
Sadness brings depression
23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.
ESV: The wicked accepts a bribe in secret to pervert the ways of justice.
The wicked accepts a bribe in secret
to pervert the ways of justice.
24Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
ESV: The discerning sets his face toward wisdom, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
The discerning sets his face toward wisdom,
but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth.
The grass is NOT greener on the other side of the fence!
25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.
26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.
RSV: To impose a fine on the innocent is not right, or to flog the noble for their integrity.
27He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
or to flog the noble for their integrity.
The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.
27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.
28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
Better to be thought a fool then open your mouth and prove it
