Last week in Romans

So we currently have peace with God through Jesus Christ our Lord and we stand in this grace rejoicing in future glory.

But what about the difficulties of life now?

This is exactly what Paul deals with in our text this morning.

The word Glory here is the very same word used in verse 2 where it is translated rejoice.

That is the meaning here and it is used to mirror vs 2 where we rejoice in the hope of future glory and not only that but we also rejoice in tribulations.

Paul is connecting these two concepts of future glory and present tribulations.

they are interlinked in our lives.

Christ was our example of suffering

So coming back to our text this morning, after Paul says that we rejoice in tribulations he then gives us the “why”.

and Vs 4 gives us this chain reaction to trials in the life of the Christian.

Which are tribulations produce perseverance, perseverance produces character or proves our character and proven character produces hope which brings us back to vs 2 that we rejoice in hope so that because we rejoice in hope we also rejoice in tribulations because the product of tribulations is hope.

So lets look at this chain of events that begins with tribulations.

The first thing that trials or tribulations produces is...

Perseverance

The greek word translated “perseverance” or “patients" in the KJV refers to a person who is not swerved from their deliberate purpose and loyalty to faith even in the greatest trials and sufferings.

So in our passage it says...

So it is tribulations that test our faith and strengthen our resolve.

This is in agreement with James

Again we see a progression.

The trying of faith produces patience and patience continues to work it perfecting work in us.

So Paul gives us this work in more detail in vs 4 of our text

so the next thing in the chain is...

Proven Character

The greek word here means an approved and tried character.

The more that our faith is put to the test the more steadfastness we develop as we see God’s hand of deliverance time and time again in our life.

This in turn develops in us a moral fortitude and strength of character.

We gain experience in faith and trusting in God so that we are more quick to persevere in the face of the next trial.

So God is doing his work in us producing the image of Christ in us by developing the character of Christ in us.

Tribulation was the path that Christ took to the cross which ended in His glorification as the redeemer of mankind.

So tribulation is our road to glorification with Christ.

This is the joy that is set before us this is why we rejoice, not because we enjoy the pain of tribulation but because we know its end result is perfection.

which brings us to the third product of our tribulations which is.

Hope

Paul has now brought us full circle we rejoice in hope of the glory of God in verse 2 we also rejoice in tribulations because it produces hope of the glory of God.

God is woking out the his glory in us.

so that we will be glorified together with Him.

This glory is beyond our comprehension.

If we can catch just a glimpse of the glory that will be revealed in us then we would gladly endure whatever suffering that God see fit to bring us into that glory because the price in not worthy to be compared.

We do have a glimpse of this glory in the person of Jesus Christ.

Finally look at this assurance we are given in vs 5.

Hope, this hope, does not disappoint, the word means literally that it does not dishonour or disgrace, put to shame the one who hopes.

How does hope put to shame?

When the thing hoped for never eventuates.

David prays in ...

His prayer is that God would come through for him because he had put his trust in God.

Paul gave the reason in vs 5

The reason that we can know that our hope will not disappoint is because the Holy Spirit has been pour out into our hearts.

We have not yet seen the redemption of our bodies otherwise we would no longer need to hope “for what a man sees why does he yet hope for”? but we have the earnest.
