I)       “Coronation of the King”

A)    File:  matthew 3v13to17 coronation of the king.doc

B)    Audio:  Coronation of the King

C)    Series:  Matthew

D)    Preached:  October 21, 2007

II)    Introduction:  Matthew:

A)    Jesus (Joshua) – Yahweh is Salvation

B)    Christ – Anointed One

C)    Son of David – Heir to the throne

D)    Son of Abraham – Son of the promise

E)     Conceived of the Holy Spirit – Heavenly Father – Heir to the heavenly throne

F)     Magi – Some recognizing his kingship already.

III) V13:  Jesus’ appearance

A)    came – just like John the Baptist and the Magi – a public arrival / visitation with a purpose.

1)      Mark 1:9 – from Nazareth in Galilee to John

(a)    After this – no longer with family – just visits Nazareth and is full-time ministry.

(b)   No mention of anyone with Him.

B)    with a purpose – “to be baptized”

C)    a public ceremony – Luke 3:21 – “when all the people were being baptized”

D)    Jesus has come with an intention to be baptized publicly by John.

IV) V 14:  John’s resistance:

A)    John Resists:

1)      “John would have prevented Him,” John kept trying to prevent Him.

2)      “I need to be baptized by you” emphatic

3)      “Iyou and youme?”  All emphatic.

4)      He is totally bewildered

B)    Why did John resist?

1)      He understood who Jesus was

(a)    “Lamb of God who takes away sins of the world.” John 1:29.

(b)   His own job told him so:  to be the forerunner of Messiah in the spirit of Elijah as the angel told Zechariah. Luke 1:17, 1:43, 1:66ff

(c)    He would know from scripture that Messiah would be righteous – no need for repentance.

(d)   His parents would have told him:  Mary – 3 mo. w/Elizabeth called Mary “Mother of my Lord.” Mary and Elizabeth were cousins.

2)      John knew his was a baptism of repentance

3)      John resisted because he knew that Jesus did not need to repent!

4)      Now we understand John’s resistance but why did Jesus want to get baptized by John?

V)    V15 Jesus insistance

A)    “to fulfill all righteousness”  - obviously to fulfill God’s will – only God can decide what is righteous.

1)      Give an example of obedience

(a)    Show submission to the will of God “righteousness”

(b)   Matt. 17:25-27, taxes.

2)      But what was God’s purpose in it?

B)    As an endorsement of John’s ministry

1)      Matthew 11:11 “Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist.”

2)      Could you imagine the conversation if Jesus had not been baptized by John?

3)      There is no clearer link between John’s ministry and Jesus – a mutual endorsement.

(a)    By doing so, Jesus is showing wholehearted approval of John’s ministry.

(b)   By baptizing Him, John gives an occasion for this public announcement of Jesus’ ministry.

C)    To identify with sinful mankind

1)      Isa. 53:12 “was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.”

2)      The beginning of the mission:  To go where the sinners are and bring them back.  John MacArthur said this: “He who had no sin took His place among those who had no righteousness.  He who was without sin submitted to a baptism for sinners.  In this act, the Savior of the world took His place among the sinners of the world.”

3)      “in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh” (Rom. 8:3);

4)      He “made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor. 5:21; cf. Isa. 53:11).

D)    Jesus was baptized because it is what God wanted.  God probably wanted it because it endorsed John’s ministry, it endorsed Jesus’ ministry, and it identified Jesus with the sinners He came to save.

VI) V16: Spirit’s assistance

A)    v16:  “the heavens were opened”

1)      Showing Jesus’ complete access to the Father

2)      like Isaiah, like Stephen and like Paul’s trip to the 3rd.

B)    v16:  “He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him”

1)      Fulfills a promise to John (John 1:33) The ‘one who sent’ John said, “‘He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.’”  This was God’s sign to John.

2)      Dove:  offered for sacrifice by the common or poor.  Wealthy – bulls, middle-class – lamb.

C)    Purpose of the Spirit:  “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and freedom to prisoners” (Isa. 61:1)

1)      His divinity did not begin here – it always was being the Son of God.  The Spirit came upon Him for empowering.

2)      His strength for the mission!  He was human – tired, hungry, needed strengthening for miracles, casting out demons, raising the dead, preaching the gospel!

3)       “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure.” John 3:34

4)      The Spirit will lead Him and strengthen Him.  Matt. 4:1; Luke 4:14.

D)    Spirit summary:

1)      To empower Him.

2)      A sign to John (and everyone else).

VII)          V17:  Father’s acceptance

A)    Hebrew 8:1-8

B)    Not as much position as Son – but one in nature and in essence.

1)      John 14:8-11

2)      John 5:22-23 “He has given all judgment to the Son, 23so that all will honor the Son even as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.”

VIII)       Applications:

A)    If we are going to follow Jesus, we get baptized.

B)    The Trinity

C)    Personal acceptance as King – true subjects, truly following.

1)      Summary:  Those who heeded John’s announcement that the kingdom was at hand here witness their king coming for the public announcement of his reign – a coronation ceremony.

(a)    Personal endorsement by the herald, John.

(b)   Testimony of the Father concerning Him.

(c)    Evidence of the Holy Spirit – as if receiving a crown.

Matthew 3:13-17:  “13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”[2]
