“SPIRITUAL GIFTS AND MINISTRY”

 

(1 Corinthians 12:1-26)

I.    DEFINITION OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

A.  Spirituals (“pneumatikos”: a manifestation of the Spirit)

B.  Gifts (“charisma”)

A manifestation of the Spirit...through which God’s spirit demonstrates or manifests Himself in the ministration of (ministering) God’s grace unto the edification of the body, ultimately to the glorification of God.

II.   DISTRIBUTION OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS

A.  God gives spiritual gifts to every believer

B.  Not all gifts are the same

1.   Believers have different gifts and different functions in the body

2.   Tendency to compare themselves with other believers with different gifts and different functions

III.  CHARACTERIZATION OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS (1 Peter 4:11)

A.  Verbal category (“If any man speak”)

Apostleship, prophecy, evangelist, pastor teacher, exhorter, teacher, person who dispenses wisdom, knowledge, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

B.  Manual [service] category (“If any man minister”)

Giving, ruling (administration), showing mercy, faith, healing, wisdom (according to the Old Testament), helping, miracles, pastor-teacher

IV. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GIFTS AND TALENTS

 

A.  Talents

1.   Given mediately at birth

2.   Can be developed or cultivated

3.   Given to unregenerate people

B.  Gifts

1.   Given immediately at spiritual birth

2.   Supernatural ability or enablement

3.   Given to regenerate people
