From work I rest or from rest I work?
From work I rest or from rest I work?
There are two ways to orient your life. They are fundamentally apposed to each other and boil down to a simple question. Do you believe God made you to be a human-doing, or a human-being? Is the primary purpose of your creation to do the will of God, or is it to be in relationship with Him? Do you find your identity and value in what you do and the things you’ve accomplished? … Well most of us do. Most of us live in the notion that we are human-doings which then ultimately answers my next question before I even ask it.
When considering the rhythm of your life, how you have it structured, would you say your mantra is: “From rest I work” or :From work I rest”? If you’re having trouble answering this question ask yourself how you manage stress. Do you find yourself living for the weekend? As soon as your vacation starts are you in a hurry to get away?
Coping Mechanisms
Coping Mechanisms
Life is stressful.
Coping mechanisms are the strategies people often use in the face of stress and/or trauma to help manage painful or difficult emotions. Coping mechanisms can help people adjust to stressful events while helping them maintain their emotional well-being.
I have 3 coping mechanisms: Eating, Shopping, Call of Duty. Thats all fine and dandy until your doctor tells you your morbidly obese class 3 - so theres no more rest in eating. Shopping can be a wonderful distraction but its hard to ignore your credit card bill.
When your coping mechanisms are invaded by stress you begin to realize how feeble they were in the first place and how strong your stress has become. Sleepless nights, unproductive days. You run from work just to try and find a scrap of rest - in anything.... but it you come up wanting.
Perfect Peace
Perfect Peace
do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.
Peace comes from God because we trust in him.
Psalm 46
Psalm 46
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore:
Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling. Selah
A river runs through it.
A river runs through it.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.
It was the ancient practice of building a wall around your city to protect it from being invaded. Walls were the most effective way to protect the city for thousands of years because it was very difficult for the enemy to get inside it. But there is a draw back. Walls do a wonderful job of keeping people out, but reflexively they also do a wonderful job of keeping people in.
