Outside of wrestling practice, there is only one person I have ever punched in the face in my lifetime.
My brother was 4 years older than me and one day he dared me to punch him and so I did.
I landed one right on his cheek.
It was not that hard and he looked at me and said you just punched me and I said yes yes I did.
My brother was a great brother growing up and though he had good reason to hit me on many occasions he never did.
We got in to many arguments over the years but one really stands out in my mind.
My mom was pregnant with my younger sister.
I was 14 and my brother was 18.
We had been told to go stack the wood in the yard.
I remember it was cool outside.
My mom was pregnant.
I was the baby of the family for 14 years.
I had never experienced a pregnant mother.
My mom is one of the kindest people you will ever meet.
She doesn’t think anyone does anything bad and she is always willing to give someone the benefit of the doubt.
Now pregnant mom was a different story.
I would hangout at my neighbors house for long periods of time just to avoid pregnant mom at times.
This day my brother and I were told to stack the wood pile and my mom was pregnant.
We were stacking the wood pile and I am sure my brother was working and I was messing with him while he worked.
As I was messing with him, I threw a rock in his direction.
He picked up the rock and took it inside to mom and said, “Mom Jonathan threw this very rock at me while we were stacking the wood”.
Now, I am sure there is a reason why we were outside stacking wood in the first place and that reason was probably because we were driving my mom crazy.
Remember non pregnant mom we could never drive her crazy but pregnant mom we drove her crazy at times.
My brother tells my mom what happened and pregnant mom rips the rock out of my brothers hand and proceeds to THROW the rock at both of us and said get outside and get the wood stacked!
My brother and I IMMEDIATELY went back outside and started stacking wood.
From that point on, during my mom’s pregnancy, my brother and I would figure out how to solve disputes without involving my mom.
Today we are in and the text shows us that the Christians in Corinth are having a hard time resolving disputes among themselves and this is causing them to struggle with their witness.
In the previous chapter, Paul addressed the sexual immorality in the church and the fact that the church was proud that this was taking place and they had not dealt with it in a timely manner.
He continues to discipline this church at Corinth.
Corinth was a philosophical city that was proud of wisdom.
The ways of the city have made their way into the church and Paul writes and addresses these things that don’t belong in the church.
Lawsuits
1 Corinthians 6:1
He says you as brothers in Christ go before unbelievers to settle your disputes.
You are not taking these disputes to each other or before saints but you are taking them before unbelievers.
v.2 Or don’t you now...
This structure only appears 3 other times outside of the new testament and in this chapter it is listed 6 times.
This city and church prided itself on what wisdom it had and Paul writes to them and says you should know.
He says you should know that the saints will judge the world and if the world is judge by you then you should be able to handle the small cases.
Saints will judge the world...
Luke
1 Corinthians
v.4
When you as Christ followers have cases pertaining to this life, you choose men who have no standing in the church to judge among you.
You are taking worldly men and letting the settle disputes among you as Christian brothers.
v.5
I say this to shame you.
There must be someone among you in the church that is wise enough to handle these disputes among the brothers.
Remember this is a church and city that prides itself on wisdom and Paul is saying you should know these things and surely there is someone among you that can judge these things among you.
v.6
Instead believers are going against believers and that is before unbelievers.
Imagine how this destroys the witness of the church when brothers are disputing against each other in front of unbelievers.
1 corinthians 6:7-8
v.7
Christians do not win when they have legal disputes among themselves.
Christians may win individual lawsuits but the church loses when Christians have lawsuits against each other.
Makes me think of a sports interview after a player gets the game winning hit.
You hear them say, I am just happy we could help get the team a win.
After a loss, you don’t hear them ever say yeah I played good but I don’t care that the team lost because I played so well today.
In the same manner, Christians lose when they take each other to court.
The gaining of a win matters little and the body of Christ is damaged when Christians fight in court.
Jesus
Jesus gave us this example as well
1 Peter 2:23
v.8
You as believers are acting unjustly and cheating each other.
Paul is very clear that the church does not win when believer take each other to court.
The church does not win when people in the church fight among each other.
Unbelievers are not drawn to churches that fight with each other.
When believers fight with each other, the name of Jesus is not lifted high or glorified.
1 Corinthians 6:9
v. 9
He list sexual sins and he will address this later in this chapter.
v.10
He list sins against each other.
Thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers.
How to handle disputes in the church
Matthew 18:15-
Respect walls and care about the feelings behind the walls.
When you don’t respect walls it does not build trust.
You can build trust by respecting walls
