The person who has received the new birth from the Gospel of Christ should be a doer of God’s Word!

Christians should receive God’s Word.

As Christians, we are called to prepare our hearts and lives to receive God’s Word.
I have a bad habit of not preparing myself to receive instructions from Kristen. I should put my phone down, or sit up and mute the TV, but instead… I don’t. This creates issues later.
James tells us what to do to receive God’s Word, or his instructions.
Anger blocks our reception.
Moral filth gets in the way.
I think because of what James said in verses 16-18 that he may be talking about when we are given a biblical rebuke, that these shouldn’t be our responses.
We have to get ourselves ready to hear the Word because it can lead us to salvation if we receive it!

Be a doer of the Word

Christians don’t just hear the Word and agree, they act.
I get a hair cut twice a week, every week. On Tuesday night and Saturday night… Sometimes, I miss a spot. So I walk out of the house looking goofy, with a little (or big) patch of hair on my otherwise bald head. I have a huge mirror in front of me when I shave, but if I don’t use it then it’s no good!
Hearing and even agreeing with the Word is useless if it isn’t followed with action.
It’s a wast of time to hear the Word and not do it.
What if you looked in the mirror and forgot what you saw? Forgot you didn’t have pants on?
This is worse!
Romans 2:13 ESV
For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified.
Two ways to understand the metaphor...
You look in the mirror and flaws are exposed and you do nothing about it.
You look in the mirror and see who you are and do not act as such.
The one who looks and does God’s Word understands the freedom it offers (vs 25).
That person is blessed in their actions because they are doing God’s Word, that is itself a blessing!

What a doer of the Word looks like.

A true doer of the Word is controlled and cares for and serves others.
Ever heard that saying “if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it must be a duck”? I saw a story one time about a duck that saw a dog when it hatched, so it thought the dog was its momma...
James gives two examples of what truly Godly people look like in their lifestyle.
Someone who truly loves God controls their tongue.
Luke 6:45 ESV
The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
this means “his heart is being deceived”
God has a special concern for the “orphans and widow”.
Orphans and widows in Scripture...
God loves and cares for the oppressed, He is just. Those who love Him will be too.
We have to control our tongues, care for the needy, and all the other things Christians are instructed to do, which we learn about by being quick to listen and humbly receiving the Word!
