Hey everybody,
If you would, open up a Bible or access your Bible to . In just a few short days we are headed to Boston to go work and serve on behalf of Jesus and His Church.
The Bible calls things like what we’re doing beautiful and here’s what I mean.
Isaiah 52:7 ESV
7 How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.”
First thing I’d like to make known to you are the mountains referred to in this verse. Some of my all time favorite places in life have been mountaintop views or climbing an enormous beautiful mountain. Our student camp this summer was in deed on a mountain and it was gorgeous. And one of the most memorable spots was on top of a mountain where you could see for miles. It was gorgeous I love mountains and the breath taking views found upon them.
But...
The verse doesn’t point to the mountain, in fact it does almost the opposite. It’s as if you get to the top of the mountain, and this verse looks downward at what it’s describing as beautiful instead of outward. And instead of pointing to the view it refers to “feet!”
Now… I don’t know about you, but I know my feet stink, sweat, and are not something I’d refer to as beautiful. Especially if I had just been walking a mountain. There’s probably a rock inside my chaco, some mud on the heel, and one of my feet probably has a bruise or scratch on it from hiking.
So my question is why would this verse call feet beautiful especially in light of the mountains it referred too? Good question.
The Bible is doing something regular here to remind us of a much larger picture taking place. The Bible is referring to “redemption” in a very cool way.
Here’s what I mean:
Feet can be nasty, smell, and look rough at times. Especially during these times. These people most often walked everywhere and didn’t have nice socks to wear in their sandals or protect their toes. But if those feet are holding up someone who’s bringing some very important, life changing news then they are by all means beautiful and necessary.
The life changing news discussed here is that there is salvation and hope for broken sinners in this world. There is a message of a God who restores and reconciles people back to himself. One of my favorite parts about this message is that this God uses people like you and I with stinky feet to bring a beautiful message of restoration and hope.
We may see some rough situations this week and get to serve in them. No matter the face of the person you’re serving, don’t overlook a conversation of bringing good news of happiness and hope for that individual. Share the good news of a man nailed to a cross for us so we could have hope. Share the good news that there is a way to know God through Jesus His Son who resurrected out of the grave for us. Share the good news that God sends the most unlikely people out to declare His message of redemption.
