Brief review: (i) Jesus command over sea - (ii) Shepherd motif -
, Note the word “reject”. The opposite of this is to “declare invalid”. The word validate mans to demonstrate or support the truth or the value of it. So, when we speak of validating the commandment of God, it means that we obey it, and make no excuse for disobedience of it.
The word validate mans to demonstrate or support the truth or the value of it.
Why is this such a big deal?
Why is this such a big deal?
- God is holy!
- God is holy!
Who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like thee, glorious in holiness, Fearful in praises, doing wonders?
- God’s people are to be holy!
- God’s people are to be holy!
And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel.
- God’s people are to be holy!
- God’s commandments reveal how holy God is!
- God’s commandments reveal how holy God is!
I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.
Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy.
And ye shall be holy unto me: for I the Lord am holy, and have severed you from other people, that ye should be mine.
Thus the commandment of God is good, and obedience to His commandment shows:
Thus the commandment of God is good, and obedience to His commandment shows:
God is the authority!
God’s commandment is being believed! This is a heart or faith matter.
God is worthy (worship)
God is holy, and man has to be made holy.
Brief impromptu application
Thus, for someone to invalidate the commandment of God is the same as having a heart that does not believe or obey God no matter how religious their deeds may be. ()
This is an important application for both non-Christians and for Christians.
Proposition: Wholeheartedly validate the commandment of God ()!
(1) Those who invalidate God’s commandment
(1) Those who invalidate God’s commandment
This Pharisaical tendency is not uncommon in our human nature. We all tend to have customs that we hold to, and if someone else does not, we “find fault.”
This is the mark of someone who has either never received true biblical salvation or is not living by the faith of the Son of God.
(2) The One who wholeheartedly validates God’s commandment
(2) The One who wholeheartedly validates God’s commandment
This is the “tassel-wearing” () Jesus.
He quotes where God’s people are given a spirit of slumber…impending judgment.
(3) The example of those who invalidate God’s commandment
(3) The example of those who invalidate God’s commandment
The example from , ,
Jesus sets forth the indictment again, “they invalidate the the word of God by their tradition.”
This is a significant indictment. This shows that they have hearts that are far from the LORD though they are engaged in religious practices, but what is so startling about what they are missing?
It is what the law teaches them. The law teaches them
(i) how holy God is, and how high his standard is.
(ii) how unholy man is, and how he needs a HEART change
(iii) how desperately man needs the “tassel”-wearing Jesus
Paul said it best in
Paul said it best in
Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

The sinful tendency of man that is revealed here is a rebellious heart. It is one that does not want to be under authority, unless it is self-authority. Why is this significant? If you remove the accountability that the law causes to surface, then men become proud in what they can do. (this happens to both Christians and non-Christians alike).
(1) There is no religious (Catholic, Baptist, Protestant) tradition that God will accept. He demands/deserves perfect obedience.
(1) There is no religious (Catholic, Baptist, Protestant) tradition that God will accept. He demands/deserves perfect obedience.
(a) No mere man can offer to God perfect obedience from the heart
(b) Jesus did what we could not do - He is the “tassel” wearing One.
this is what he has been doing throughout the book, healing the sick, demon-possessed…more a healer of souls....
(c) Only those who believe on Jesus Christ as their LORD have his account of obedience imputed
(d) Do you believe?
(e) Does your life prove that you believe?
(2) The commandment of Scripture should have deep meaning for the biblical Christian
(2) The commandment of Scripture should have deep meaning for the biblical Christian
(a) the law is continually bringing us back to how holy God is
(b) consequently, we are reminded how desperately we need Jesus
(c) this leads to deep humility over our sin because of the price Jesus paid - “dead” is the term
(d) this leads to deep, intentional submission to the lordship of God and not sin - ,
(3) Examples:
(3) Examples:
(i) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we heartily obey and honor our parents
(ii) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we love the brethren
(iii) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we battle the desire to sit around and watch for faults in everyone else
(iv) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we remember that we still battle our fleshly desires (hearts)
(v) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we don’t gossip and tear down each other
(vi) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we use your tongues to edify one another
(vii) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we don’t allow covetousness to rule our hearts
(viii) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we don’t find our identity in our careers
(ix) Because of the tassel-wearing Jesus, we don’t find our ultimate worth in our ownselves
(x) Because fo the tassel-wearing Jesus, we don’t find our ultimate value in our grandchildren
Because Jesus Christ did what we could not do, we find that our sufficiency is in Jesus Christ. If our sufficiency is in Christ, then our lives should be lived by faith in this sufficiency, which means we will be obedient.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
