God Can’t Use Me, Can He?

This is a very common statement/question among believers today. Many believers don’t not think that God can use them in any capacity because they have a specific inability, or their relationship with God isn’t strong enough. The problem with that thinking is that it’s just dead wrong. If we are truly followers of Jesus, then we say that we believe the bible and all accounts in it. Well, the Bible is full of both men and women that served God and were used despite an inability or a defect. In this series we will discover how God used 4 men in some different ways to do some really awesome things.

Moses

Moses was the man that God had chosen to bring His people out of Egypt. God hand selected him to do the Fathers will. God knew that Moses wasn’t perfect. He knew that Moses had inabilities, and weak points. But God looked beyond those and saw the abilities and leadership skills that Moses did possess. He sought Moses out, probably because He knew Moses wasn’t looking for this responsibility. God wants those that are humble. In the story of Moses life we see that at the original calling from God Moses is very hesitant that he is the man for the Job. What we are going to look at today is that in every circumstance that Moses is worried about, God uses him for His honor and glory.

1. Insecurity (Exodus 3-4)

At the burning bush in Exodus chapter 3 God reveals Himself to Moses by the way of a burning bush. This is how God shows Moses that He means business. He wants to use Him and he is not going to let moses off easy. He has an answer for every excuse Moses throws at Him. In my opinion, Moses is doing what most people do when trying to get out of something they are scared of or don’t really want to do. He is trying to talk his way out of it.
a. “What shall I say…?” (3:13)
Moses is questioning God here by basically saying “Even if I do this, what in the world would I even tell these people?” God has an answer for this question, “You say I AM sent you.” He also tells him that he cannot do it alone, but that he needs the help of a mighty hand. God says that he will stretch out His hand do it for him all he has to do allow the hand of God to work.
b. “They will not believe me or listen to my voice...” (4:1)
So after God answers his question, Moses responds by telling God that even if he does tell them what God said to tell them, they will not believe or listen to him. This is another attempt at basically telling God He’s got the wrong guy. God again gives him an answer by telling him that he has given him “a staff”, and that he is to use that as his sign that God is where he gets his authority from. God gives Moses ability to do signs and wonders. He turns his staff into a serpent. He turned his hand into a lepers hand. He also says He will give him the ability to use his staff to turn the nile river into blood if the people still do not believe him.
c. “I am not eloquent, I am slow of speech and of tongue...” (4:10)
Again Moses give the Lord another excuse as to why he cannot do what God has asked. He basically tells him that he is an awful speaker and that has never been good at it, and that it hasn’t gotten any better since God had called him to be the leader of the people. God responds by asking him a question “Who made man’s mouth?”. Then God says that He will be Moses’s mouth, and that He will teach him what he needs to say.
d. “Oh, my Lord, please send someone else...” (4:13)
Here we see Moses real heart. We see that He feels really insecure. He feels as though he is not capable of filling the shoes of the type of leader God wants. He doesn’t think he would match up to the type of person God would want. This response by Moses angered the Lord. So, God gives Moses a response that he can’t argue with. He responds by asking Moses “Can your brother not speak well?” With that said, God says that Moses will tell Aaron what to say and Aaron will speak to the people, and God will be with them both.

Application

Despite what we think about ourselves, whether we think we are incapable of fulfilling our calling or not, God has called each of us to a task. God knows what he is doing. He will not select someone that he knows cannot fulfill the task He’s called them to. God wants to use those that have inabilities and insecurities so that he gets the glory and not us. He wants to be recognized as the one who made something happen, not us. This week we are going to study other men just like Moses that have imperfections and insecurities and yet God uses them to do great and mighty things!!
