II. BODY
A. The Spiritual Gift working of miracles
a. Miracle: supernatural intervention by God in the ordinary course of nature
1. This is often through a person by the empowering of the Holy Spirit.
2. A natural birth is beautiful & amazing cause God nits that child together in her/his mother’s womb
i. But, isn’t a working of miracles in that God is doing an amazing thing through natural means
3. A birth by a woman who couldn’t conceive because God supernaturally intervened…That’s a Miracle
i. Sarah recieved a child after she was too old
ii. Sam’s mom conceived a child even though she was barren
iii. In the NT Elizabeth, like Sarah, conceived a child even though she was too old
iv. Marry didn’t have sex & she conceived
b. Miracles are God’s power in action
10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.
1. The word miracle here is “dynamis”: literally explosive power in action
1. The word miracle here is “dynamis”; literally powerful acts
i. dynamis is where we get the word dynamite
i.
ii. Thus: our main vs might read: “to another the working of explosive God power”
-Working miracles are God TNT
iii. When Paul writes to Tim in...
7 for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
-the word power here is dynamis… explosive power in action
c. Miracles often confirm the Gospel preached
(describe acts 13)
Acts 13
1. Paul & Barnabas in Paphos
i. a leader there heard of these fellas & called a meeting
ii. became more like a stand off…a western style dual
iii. a “magician” was there in the court trying to turn the leader away from Jesus through apposing Paul & Barnabas
iv. Look @ God’s explosive work through Paul:
10 and said, “You son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, full of all deceit and villainy, will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?
11 And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and unable to see the sun for a time.” Immediately mist and darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.
12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had occurred, for he was astonished at the teaching of the Lord.
2. The early church prayed that our miracle working God would confirm the word as well...
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Holy Spirit And His Gifts Study Course . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,
30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
Acts 4:
i. Let’s look at the gift of miracle working in the OT
B. Elijah was empowered to work Miracles
(tell the story )
C. ??? was empowered to work Miracles
a. miracles aren’t always for Gods people
1. Sometimes God doesn’t send us to where we want to go, but to where God needs us to go
i. & that’s not always the most comfortable place
ii. God sent Elijah to enemy territory to demonstrate God’s awesomeness against the backdrop of failed Baal worship
-Zarephath was in the middle o a drought
& that’s not always the most comfortable
16 The jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty, according to the word of the Lord that he spoke by Elijah.
7:
God showed himself real & faithful to an enemy of God
b. Miracles can be a bridge to turn God’s enemies into his people
1. God showed himself real & faithful to an enemy of God
i. Miracles aren’t always colossal but they are always supernatural
ii. this miracle didn’t change the world, but it did save a woman’s life…changing her world
C. Jesus was empowered to work miracles
(Tell the Story Water 2 Wine )
5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
a. If we want to see a miracle done we must do as Jesus tells us
b. God provides extravagantly
Catching a lrg # o fish Lk 5:3-10
6 Now there were six stone water jars there for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons.
7 Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
(Describe some more)
draw some & show to Master o the feast
1. 20-30 gallons of wine provided
i. wasn’t just lots o junk wine (describe the scene)
Jn 2:10
10 and said to him, “Everyone serves the good wine first, and when people have drunk freely, then the poor wine. But you have kept the good wine until now.”
2. the best wine provided
c. Miracles often draw people toward faith
This was an interruption in the system of nature as we know it
storms happen all the time
11 This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee, and manifested his glory. And his disciples believed in him.
1. Jesus used this as an opportunity to show his disciples who He really is…& they believed
Jesus spoke to the wind & waves & peace miraculously interrupted what normally happens
Hagin, Kenneth E. The Holy Spirit And His Gifts Study Course . Faith Library Publications. Kindle Edition.
2. notice John described this miracle as manifesting his GLORY - POWERFUL PRESENCE & CHARACTER
i. The glory of Jesus was revealed both in his ability 2
The glory of Jesus was revealed both in his ability to change water to wine, and also in his grace in providing an abundance of quality wine to spare the bridegroom embarrassing loss of face. Second, the evangelist says, his disciples put their faith in him.
-change water to wine (alter the substance o a thing 2 something else) &
-in his grace in providing an abundance of quality wine 2 spare the bridegroom embarrassing loss of face.
