Introduction

The truth is God made us all very uniquely. We each have our things that make us unique about each other.
There are many things we are we have to be honest about, but we can lie about to cover it up. Maybe we are selfish. We struggle with pride, or not getting along with others. We are short tempered. We lose our patience. We yell at our parents.
We can do all of this and not be honest with our selves, and then not be honest with others. We then aren’t honest with how God made us to be.
He wants us to be honest so we can be honest. That are friendships are true.
Genesis 12:10–20 ESV
10 Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, “I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance, 12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake.” 14 When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful. 15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house. 16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels. 17 But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go.” 20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.
This story shows us Abram who is promised by God that he will have a chosen people through him.
But Abram gets to this point where he is in a foreign land. The land of Egypt, and he tells his wife to lie. To lie about who she is and who he is.
She is a beautiful woman. The most beautiful you have ever seen. He did not want the Egyptians to know who he was. Instead of telling the truth about them being husband and wife, he said they were brother and sister.
They did not want to stay
Now Abram lied to the Pharaoh about who he was. Look what God did to Pharaoh.
Genesis 12:17 ESV
17 But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife.
The pharaoh couldn't have known that because Abram was not honest.
Abram lied to protect himself, but he caused harm to others. When we lie to people we keep them from knowing the real us. people can’t learn about who we are.
God wants us to be honest so that people will trust us and we can be open with people. That we can be honest with our family, our friends.
Let’s look at another passage
1 John 1:6–10 ESV
6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
1 John 1:8–10 ESV
8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
If we as Christians, claim to be walking with God but we are in darkness then we lie. If we say we do not sin, we lie. then look at verse 10
1 John 1:10 ESV
10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
So we lie, then we deceive ourselves and then in verse 10 we make him a liar. God who is the source of truth, and when we do not confess our sin. When we are not honest before God, we make him a liar.
Lets look at the purpose of honesty
Exodus 20:16 ESV
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
It is God’s command.
We have been talking about being honest with one another.
2 Corinthians 8:21 ESV
21 for we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man.
We understand that all lying is sin, no matter how small.
Colossians 3:9 ESV
9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices
To be honest with our actions we must be willing to confess sin when it is there. We need to be open with God, open with those around us. We want to expose sin into the light. To walk in the light as God is the light.
This then we can be honest with ourselves, we can be honest with friends. We get to learn about our friends as they learn about us.

Prayer

Dear God,
Teach us to love ourselves enough to be honest about who we are, and bless us with real friendships and friends who love us the way we are.

Memory Verse

Proverbs 24:26 ESV
26 Whoever gives an honest answer kisses the lips.
