1 “If a prophet or someone who has dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you,
2 and that sign or wonder he has promised you comes about, but he says, ‘Let us follow other gods,’ which you have not known, ‘and let us worship them,’
3 do not listen to that prophet’s words or to that dreamer. For the Lord your God is testing you to know whether you love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul.
4 You must follow the Lord your God and fear him. You must keep his commands and listen to him; you must worship him and remain faithful to him.
5 That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he has urged rebellion against the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the place of slavery, to turn you from the way the Lord your God has commanded you to walk. You must purge the evil from you.
6 “If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let us go and worship other gods’—which neither you nor your fathers have known,
7 any of the gods of the peoples around you, near you or far from you, from one end of the earth to the other—
8 do not yield to him or listen to him. Show him no pity, and do not spare him or shield him.
9 Instead, you must kill him. Your hand is to be the first against him to put him to death, and then the hands of all the people.
10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
11 All Israel will hear and be afraid, and they will no longer do anything evil like this among you.
I. What you believe, and who you follow matters.

A. There are many who claim to speak for God, who are frauds.

Illus: There has never been a day when quality content has been more accessible. Think about it, today if you wanted to restore a 57 Chevy, all you would need to do is look it up on YouTube. If you wanted to remodel your house, every step along the way can be found in DIY videos and websites.
At this present time information about every topic under the sun from politics, to nature, to your favorite hobby is available to you.
In the midst of a deluge of information, there are plenty of amateurs who will post content which may look right, but are not right. IN the same way, an entire genre of news has arisen which does not honor the facts but purposely skews them to one political opinion or the next.
In our day and age quality preaching has never been more accessible. You can listen to Matt Chandler, Jared C Wilson, or even the Late Billy Graham with just a few clicks of the mouse.
The ease of access to this quality preaching, and resources has also created the accessibility of tons of content which may look and sound christian from the outside, but does not line up with scripture.
Anybody can launch a podcast, can post sermons, can write a blog… and the most cleverly disguised ones pull at our deepest desires whether personal failings, material desires, political ambitions, or whatever floats your boat.
There are many many ear ticklers out there who will deliver EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT to hear.
Unfortunately we generally give most people who claim to speak for God a pass in what they say, assuming they say it with the right intentions.
13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who go through it.
14 How narrow is the gate and difficult the road that leads to life, and few find it.
15 “Be on your guard against false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravaging wolves.
B. We have embraced a shallow faith.

Illus: Do you know how you can spot a fake…
1. Look to see how they handle scripture.
This is what I mean, Do they use scripture to support their own ideas.
Do they read a passage of the bible at the beginning of their sermon, but really only teach you stories from their own life and good feeling truths?
Do they teach in such a way that you doubt the truth of the Bible.
are they teaching you their thoughts or the Bible’s thoughts?
2. To truly see whether someone is teaching you the word of God or not, you must study the Bible for yourself. If you rely only on my preaching for your understanding of God, you will be starving for truth. YOu must spend time in a consistinet, and purposful reading of scripture.
- I am talking about more than a devotional which uses one verse and then goes it’s own way.
I am talking about letting the Bible be your primary devotion. Read it through in a year. Read through the new testament.
We look and say, I want to hear from God and then never spend any time in the word he has given us.
As believers we need to become serious about the word of God. We need to let it guide every decision in our lives. We need it to guide the way we understand life, politics, family, justice, and even our church. For the the God breathed Word to guide us, it means you have to seriously study it.
1 But know this: Hard times will come in the last days.
2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, proud, demeaning, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 unloving, irreconcilable, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, without love for what is good,
4 traitors, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5 holding to the form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid these people.
13 Evil people and impostors will become worse, deceiving and being deceived.
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you,
15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness,
17 so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
II. Is God your first love?

A. Genuine faith in God chooses God over those we are closest to in this world.

Illus: Take a moment and soak in the radical nature of the Bible. It is good for this passage to shake you.
This passage teaches how radical a commitment God expects.
If this is the commitment God expects of you (which it is) are you on board?
As the dad of two incredible girls, I struggle with this.
I will gladly sing “I’d rather have Jesus than silver or gold”, But I struggle to sin “I’d rather be his than have my two girls”.
No matter what pulls at your heart today, God has to be first. If anything comes between your allegiance and God, God wins. If anything leads you astray God wins.
How many lesser things are we not willing to sacrifice for God, hobby's, jobs, addictions, you name it.
If they lead you to a lesser relationship with God and commitment to His bride the church, your priorities need to be evaluated.
25 Now great crowds were traveling with him. So he turned and said to them:
26 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, and even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.
27 Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
B. In the Old Testament, understand the timeless principle separate from the civil practice.

10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away from the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
(always allow the NT to interpret and apply the timeless principles of the OT)
Illus: It is important to understand God wrote his timeless words to a people at a certain point in a certain time.
IN Deuteronomy God was giving these final words to the people as civil law heading into the promise land. God was protecting his people, and his plan of reconciling men through Jesus.
Behind the civil law was a timeless principle which is emphasized over and over in scripture.
Just a basic way to understand how to read your bible, the New Testament helps us understand how to apply the Old Testament today.
Separating the consequences specifically for Israel from the timeless principle of allegiance to God can be done by studying what the New Testament says.
Just watch as 1 Corinthians helps to reiterate the timeless principle within the body of the church.
11 But actually, I wrote you not to associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister and is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or verbally abusive, a drunkard or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
12 For what business is it of mine to judge outsiders? Don’t you judge those who are inside?
13 God judges outsiders. Remove the evil person from among you.

Illus: As you walk away I my challenge for you is to 1st look at what your are consuming. Do the shows, the content, the blogs, the people in your life lead you to a greater and stronger relationship with Jesus, and
2nd look at your heart.
Do you love Jesus more than anything, do you surround yourself with people that challenge you to follow Him, or are you surrounding yourself with people who will lead you away.
God has given the church for you. My call, week in and out is to challenge you to look at places in your life which do not line up with God. Look at my job description:
1 I solemnly charge you before God and Christ Jesus, who is going to judge the living and the dead, and because of his appearing and his kingdom:
2 Preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching.
3 For the time will come when people will not tolerate sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, will multiply teachers for themselves because they have an itch to hear what they want to hear.
4 They will turn away from hearing the truth and will turn aside to myths.
5 But as for you, exercise self-control in everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.
