Matthew 7:1–6 NKJV
“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
Matthew 7:1–6 NKJV

Main Idea: God desires for us to judge rather than be judgmental.

v. 2 The intensity or severity of the judgement you use will be the same used toward you in your judgement.

Key Question: Are you quick to be judgmental?

1 Corinthians 15:33 NKJV
Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”
Psalm 1:1 NKJV
Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful;

1. A judgmental person is not the same as a fruit inspector. (v. 1)

v. 3-5 We must make sure we are careful to examine our own lives before we criticize someone else’s.
v. 6 - Is our righteous judgement or “advice” consider pearls?
Matthew 7:1 NKJV
“Judge not, that you be not judged.

Romans 2:1–2 NKJV
Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.
Romans 14:10–13 NKJV
But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us shall give account of himself to God. Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother’s way.

2. A judgmental person is not as critical of themselves as they are of others. (v. 2)

Matthew 7:2 NKJV
For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.
James 2:13 NKJV
For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
2 Corinthians 9:6 NKJV
But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

3. A judgmental person never looks in the mirror. (v. 3-5)

Matthew 7:3–5 NKJV
And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; and look, a plank is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
Galatians 6:1 NKJV
Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted.
John 8:7–9 NKJV
So when they continued asking Him, He raised Himself up and said to them, “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

4. A judgmental person has no discernment. (v. 6)

Matthew 7:6 NKJV
“Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you in pieces.
Proverbs 9:7–8 NKJV
“He who corrects a scoffer gets shame for himself, And he who rebukes a wicked man only harms himself. Do not correct a scoffer, lest he hate you; Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
2 Peter 3:14–16 NKJV
Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.
