Jacob

Over twenty years since he had run away and now the Lord speaks to him, “Time to Go Home”
Time to go back...
Remember when Jacob deceived his family and had to run for his life…rememeber the nigth and the dream/vision.
So Jacob makes the journey back, about 700klms He brings his family with him Leah and Rachel
His brother hears and comes out with 400 men
Jacob is alone the night before he is about to meet his greatest fear, for the moment, meeting his brother.
The fight begins with someone who Jacob cannot see. Perhaps it was at hitman sent by his brother.
It continues throughout the night...
At some point he realises it is the Lord whom he is wrestling. The moment when he stops fighting and starts to cling…not let go!
A story where Jacob is renamed, blessed and sent out...
v24
People who struggle to know who they are try to be the people they admire…Jacob will give back everything to his brother, he stops trying to be his brother and become who he is. This is the start of the that change.
The example of baptism in many traditions when an individual would be given a new name.
People change in Holy Scripture and it is God who begins and completes the change. Counter to today’s culture were people take it and believe it is their right to change and be who they want to be.
Who shapes our identity?
Jacob has indentified himself in relation to his brother...
God says, Jacob it is time...
Have you, have I been fighting who we are and who God has created us to be?
That Moment!
Jacob is wounded and as a result he clings to God.
In God he experiences...
“God out of love becomes the enemy of our old selves”...
Jacob is around sixty and God hasn’t finished with him
God reshapes Jacob and as a result wounds him.
He is Renamed
He is being reshaped for a purpose…His reshaping would be for the blessing of the nations. (Story of a person who had changed) God does use people who have come through difficult and painful experiences in life. God can use you to be a blessing wherever He has you.
Is God rehoning you? Take time to reflect? Don’t forget! Respond...
