What would you do if suddenly you received a huge and unexpected inheritance?
What would you do if in the morning you woke up just a normal person, completely poor, living in a desert place, and at night you had become a very rich person, sleeping on a palace?
We see a lot of that in “novelas” - Atual Maria da Paz (boleira) virou milionaria.
In this world, there are examples of people who came from prison to palaces: Nelson Mandela, and also biblical characters, like Joseph. Daniel is another example: from captivity to the Babylonian palace.

The message today is not a “novela”, it happened in real life, and it’s about kindness, second chances, and about a covenant that changed completely the life of a man called Mephibosheth.

1 Preguntó David: «¿Ha quedado alguno de la casa de Saúl a quien pueda yo favorecer por amor de Jonatán?».
2 Había un siervo de la casa de Saúl llamado Siba, al cual llamaron para que viniera ante David. Y el rey le preguntó: —¿Eres tú Siba? —Sí, para servirte—respondió él.
3 El rey le dijo: —¿No ha quedado nadie de la casa de Saúl, para que yo lo favorezca con la misericordia de Dios? Respondió Siba al rey: —Aún queda un hijo de Jonatán, lisiado de los pies.
4 —¿Dónde está?—le preguntó entonces el rey. Siba respondió al rey: —Está en casa de Maquir hijo de Amiel, en Lodebar.
5 Entonces el rey David mandó a traerlo de la casa de Maquir hijo de Amiel, de Lodebar.
6 Al llegar Mefi-boset hijo de Jonatán hijo de Saúl, ante David, se postró sobre su rostro e hizo una reverencia. David le dijo: —Mefi-boset. —Aquí tienes a tu siervo—respondió él.
7 Luego David añadió: —No tengas temor, porque a la verdad yo tendré misericordia contigo por amor de Jonatán tu padre. Te devolveré todas las tierras de tu padre Saúl, y tú comerás siempre a mi mesa.
8 Inclinándose él dijo: —¿Quién es tu siervo, para que mires a un perro muerto como yo?
9 Entonces el rey llamó a Siba, siervo de Saúl, y le dijo: —Todo lo que fue de Saúl y de toda su casa, yo lo he dado al hijo de tu señor.
10 Tú, pues, le labrarás las tierras, tú con tus hijos y tus siervos, y almacenarás los frutos, para que el hijo de tu señor tenga pan para comer; pero Mefi-boset, el hijo de tu señor, comerá siempre a mi mesa. Siba, que tenía quince hijos y veinte siervos,
11 respondió al rey: —Conforme a todo lo que ha mandado mi señor, el rey, a su siervo, así lo hará tu siervo. —Mefi-boset—dijo el rey—comerá a mi mesa, como uno de los hijos del rey.
12 Tenía Mefi-boset un hijo pequeño, llamado Micaía. Todos los que vivían en la casa de Siba eran siervos de Mefi-boset.
13 Pero Mefi-boset, que estaba lisiado de ambos pies, vivía en Jerusalén, porque comía siempre a la mesa del rey.

Context
This story happens in Jerusalem, about 1000 years BC. The nation of Israel was an established Kingdom, and after many battles with many nations, king David had conquered peace all around. David was on that time one of the most powerful men in the world, if not the most powerful one.
Then, He remembered his good friend Jonathan, and the covenant he made with him concerning their future. That covenant was made when David was still trying to escape Jonathan’s father, king Saul.
Let’s take a look at the covenant between David and Jonathan:
13 Pero si mi padre intenta hacerte mal, traiga Jehová sobre Jonatán el peor de los castigos, si no te lo hago saber para que te vayas en paz. Que Jehová esté contigo como estuvo con mi padre.
14 Si para entonces estoy vivo, usa conmigo la misericordia de Jehová, para que no muera,
15 y nunca apartes tu misericordia de mi casa. Cuando Jehová haya eliminado uno por uno a los enemigos de David de la faz de la tierra, no dejes que el nombre de Jonatán sea quitado de la casa de David.
16 Así hizo Jonatán un pacto con la casa de David, diciendo: «Demándelo Jehová de manos de los enemigos de David».

The man we read about it in the main text, Mephibosheth, was Jonathan’s son, and lived far away from Jerusalem, beyond the Jordan River, in the south of Galilee, in a city called Lo-Debar. Mephibosheth was cripple from both legs.
The accident with Mephibosheth happened when he was 5 years old, when his nanny was probably running for their life. That can be read on 2 Samuel:

Because of the pact made, king David decides to do something that would impact Mephibosheth for the rest of his life. Today, we will concentrate on the results of his decision.

The same way Joseph brought his family because of the famine in Canaan, David brought Mephibosheth from Lo-Debar. Lo-Debar means “no pasture” “not having”, a land of the forgotten.

It was a costume that the new king would kill all the royal family of the previous king. David, however, wanted him close by, in the palace. Mephibosheth was probably terrified with the king’s decision of going after him.
Let’s think for a moment about the royal delegation arriving at Lo-Debar... “We are looking for Mephibosheth!! He must have been petrified with fear!
He was just left in Lo-Debar by someone and he just accepted it. But that was about to change!
But the Covenant between David and Jonathan also brought:

Now Mephibosheth is in the presence of the king… and this is what he says:

See, he was NOT a dog, but he thought of himself to be like a dog. Many times our situation is not a condition, but a mindset!
But king David was just starting...

2. Honor and Belonging
Mephibosheth now was a guest of honor in the king’s palace. Now, he was going to seat at the king’s table!
Mephibosheth was given the honor as royal family that once he had back.
Let’s think about the scene during every dinner…
There would come Joab, the general, Abisai, a powerful warrior, Zadok and Abiathar, the priests, the Scribe Seraiah, prince Absalom, princess Tamar, all the chief ministers, and all the royal court, and then king David. Suddenly, someone else also comes in: it’s Mephibosheth, with his crutches, proudly dragging himself into the room!
3. Inheritance
All the properties of his grandfather, King Saul, and of his father Jonathan as the firstborn, which was a great inheritance, would now belong to Mephibosheth now and his descendants forever!
We have to understand that we are joint heirs with Christ.

Now he would be considered one of the King’s sons! No more wasteland, his home now was Jerusalem!
David adopted Mephibosheth! No more shame, no more hiding. Maybe king David put him with the best physicians in town… one thing is certain: Mephibosheth is forever granted in the house of the king!
FINAL APPLICATIONS
FINAL APPLICATIONS
The story of Mephibosheth is the story of all of us. It is the story of how God, because of King Jesus, decided to call us back from a land of sin and desolation and bring us back to the restoration and inheritance of the Kingdom of God.
We all are crippled, we all came from Lodebar, we all were received by the wonderful grace of the King and were accepted into His table forever!
Everything was set, Mephibosheth had only to ACCEPT IT. Can you imagine it if he just had said “No, I want to come back to Lo-Debar...”

Let’s think now of that great day where all of us will be part of another King, the Son of David, Jesus Christ, in the eternity: Abraham, Moses, David

The same way David did because of Jonathan, God does because of Jesus. (GRACE: God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense)
on v. 13 he still was a lame, but in the palace, like us. We will always need the grace. Lame in the beginning, lame at the end.
Today may be your last day in Lo-Debar! someone may have dropped you, but God wants to restore the time you lost.
