LAST WEEK

We finished
All 4 parts to that chapter are on iTunes, Youtube, and our website.
We concluded that there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God
That there is nothing that can stand in the way of God loving us
When it comes to the Daily Spiritual Battle, we need to know that if God is for us, who can be against us?

THIS WEEK

We are going to look at the heart behind Paul’s Passion
He has been preaching up a storm
Giving us Theological Clarity
But why?
Why preach so passionately about something?
Why expound on such valuable truths?

TURN TO

Romans 9:1–13 NKJV
1 I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen. 6 But it is not that the word of God has taken no effect. For they are not all Israel who are of Israel, 7 nor are they all children because they are the seed of Abraham; but, “In Isaac your seed shall be called.” 8 That is, those who are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God; but the children of the promise are counted as the seed. 9 For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, “The older shall serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.”
Romans 9:1–33 NKJV
9 For this is the word of promise: “At this time I will come and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, “The older shall serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.” 14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! 15 For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” 16 So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy. 17 For the Scripture says to the Pharaoh, “For this very purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My name may be declared in all the earth.” 18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He wills, and whom He wills He hardens. 19 You will say to me then, “Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?” 20 But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, “Why have you made me like this?” 21 Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor? 22 What if God, wanting to show His wrath and to make His power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath prepared for destruction, 23 and that He might make known the riches of His glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had prepared beforehand for glory, 24 even us whom He called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles? 25 As He says also in Hosea: “I will call them My people, who were not My people, And her beloved, who was not beloved.” 26 “And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, You are not My people,’ There they shall be called sons of the living God.” 27 Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, The remnant will be saved. 28 For He will finish the work and cut it short in righteousness, Because the Lord will make a short work upon the earth.” 29 And as Isaiah said before: “Unless the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, We would have become like Sodom, And we would have been made like Gomorrah.” 30 What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith; 31 but Israel, pursuing the law of righteousness, has not attained to the law of righteousness. 32 Why? Because they did not seek it by faith, but as it were, by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumbling stone. 33 As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Romans 9:1-
PRAY
Romans 9:1–5 NKJV
1 I tell the truth in Christ, I am not lying, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit, 2 that I have great sorrow and continual grief in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my countrymen according to the flesh, 4 who are Israelites, to whom pertain the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the service of God, and the promises; 5 of whom are the fathers and from whom, according to the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, the eternally blessed God. Amen.
Romans 9:1-
THINK ABOUT THE ONE PERSON IN THIS WORLD THAT YOU LOVE THE MOST . . .
THINK ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU LOVE THEM . . .
THINK ABOUT WHAT NOURISHES THAT LOVE . . .
ISN’T IT GLORIOUS?
IT WOULD BE VERY EASY TO TAKE A HIT FOR THAT PERSON
TO TAKE THE BULLET FOR THAT PERSON
TO DIE FOR THAT PERSON
NOW THINK ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND . . .
WOULD YOU BE WILLING TO GO TO HELL IN ORDER TO ENSURE THIS PERSON’S PASSAGE TO HEAVEN?
WOULD YOU BE ACCURSED FROM CHRIST AND YOUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN ORDER TO SEE THEM ACCEPT CHRIST INTO THEIR LIVES?
PAUL WAS CONCERNED
BURDENED FOR PEOPLE
EMOTIONAL ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL STATE OF HIS JEWISH BROTHERS AND SISTERS
This burden within was the energy behind his passion
This concern was the fuel for his ministry

For Paul, the more God revealed to Paul the depravity of his Jewish brothers and sisters, the greater his Passion to preach the Risen Christ.

PAUL IS SO BURDENED FOR THEM, HE BEGINS TO EXPRESS THE POWER OF THESE FEELINGS
HE BEGINS TO EXPRESS THE POWER OF THESE FEELINGS
HE BEGINS TO FEEL WHAT MOSES FELT
Desiring to be accursed
Desiring to be accursed
Desiring to taste all that hell has
Desiring to be separated from God
In order for many others to experience the Love of God
HE BEGINS TO FEEL WHAT JESUS ACTUALLY WENT THROUGH
CHURCH, THIS IS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE HEART OF A TRUE SHEPHERD/PASTOR/LEADER
IT IS SOMETHING THAT EVERY FATHER KIND OF FEELS AT ONE POINT OR ANOTHER
Where you wish that the pain that another is going through would be transferred to you in order to see them well again.
When you desire to absorb the pain of another, at the expense of your own well being.
This is kind of what Paul was feeling
I say “Kind Of” because he didn’t take the full brunt of this desire
This is actually what Jesus went through
Tasting the Pain of Separation from the Father
Tasting the Pain of Sin and Death
Paul desired to be accursed for the sake of his brethren
Though that was a good thought
Though it expresses his gospel centered motives
God wouldn’t cosign his feelings for a couple of reasons
#1 Because it would make Paul co-redeemer with Christ
#2 It would magnify their entitlement
The History of the Jewish People is saturated with evidence pointing to Jesus as Messiah
It is unbelievably marked by God’s fingerprints
Paul even says it
To them pertains the adoption
They got to see the Glory
They know the covenants, and continue to be in covenant with the Lord
They were the ones in charge of the Law, the Word of God
They were the first to serve God
They were the ones that first heard His Promises.
Through their lineage, Christ came
How much more evidence do they need?
What else must God do to get their attention?
Is God’s word not enough?
Is the work of Yeshua not enough?
Has God’s word failed?
Romans 9:6–13 NKJV
THE WORD OF GOD IS NOT THE VARIABLE
In fact, we could truthfully say, that God’s word has been the only constant in the history of the Jewish people.
The Word of God wasn’t the problem
THE PROBLEM WAS THAT SOME ISRAELITES HAD BEGUN TO RELATE THEIR SPIRITUAL CONFIDENCE TO THEIR RACIAL IDENTIFICATION
THEY HAD BEEN CLAIMING THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH FATHER ABRAHAM
BUT THEY HAVE YET TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE PROMISES MADE THROUGH ISAAC
AND FOLLOWING THAT PROMISE THROUGH JACOB AND NOT ESAU.
IT HAPPENS IN EVERY RELIGION
SO MANY PEOPLE ALIGN THEIR SPIRITUAL BELIEFS TO THEIR HERITAGE
When they are asked, what do you believe, they don’t answer the question
They answer with the system . . .
“What do you believe?”
I’m Christian
I’m Catholic
I’m Jewish
I’m Mormon
Isn’t it crazy that Jesus didn’t ask his disciples how their heritage shaped their beliefs
Mark 8:28–29 NKJV
28 So they answered, “John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets.” 29 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered and said to Him, “You are the Christ.”
Their very heritage pointed to Jesus
This is why He asks them “Who do people say that I AM?”
He asked His disciples “Who do you say that I AM?”
EVERY RELIGION AND ITS CONGREGANTS WILL BE JUDGED ON WHO THEY SAY JESUS IS.
PAUL IS BRINGING ATTENTION HOW FATHER ABRAHAM WAS THE FIRST TO HEAR OF THE PROMISE OF MESSIAH
HOW THE FATHER THEN HAD A PARTICULAR PLAN FOR THE COMING OF MESSIAH
IT WASN’T THROUGH ABRAHAM AND HAGAR
BUT THROUGH ABRAHAM AND SARAH
IT WASN’T THROUGH ISHMAEL
BUT THROUGH ISAAC
IT WASN’T THROUGH ESAU
BUT THROUGH JACOB
GOD HAD A PERFECT AND CLEAR PATH FOR MESSIAH TO COME
HOWEVER THE JEWISH PEOPLE DIDN’T SEE IT
IT WAS WRITTEN ALL THROUGHOUT THE SCRIPTURES, BUT THEY WOULD NOT ADMIT THAT THE SCRIPTURES POINTED TO JESUS.
THEY WERE MORE FOCUSED AND SATISFIED WITH THE WORKS OF THE FLESH, THAN WHAT THE SPIRIT HAD TO OFFER
THEY W
THEY WERE MORE CONFIDENT IN THE FLESH/HERITAGE THAN THE SPIRIT/KINGDOM
Sometimes, Heritage fights against the work of the Holy Spirit
Sometimes, Heritage and Comfort cause friction within our Spiritual Formation
For the Jewish people, their Heritage enslaved them to a system, while Jesus desired to set them free.
But its not just the Jewish People, this is everyone.
Humanity is stuck in their own ways, doing what is right in their own eyes, until Jesus is factored into the equation
Until we invite the fresh work of Jesus and the Holy Spirit, we will never fully know what the Father has preordained for us to experience.
Everything short of that, is not His Best for us.
For our Jewish friends and neighbors
We must know that God is still at work
We must know that they are still the Apple of God’s Eye
We must know that their is still a remnant that will come to Jesus
But for the rest of them
The Work of the flesh limits them to a kingdom made with hands, and prevents them from experiencing the Kingdom made by God.
SO WHAT ABOUT VERSE 13
WHY DOES GOD SAY THAT “JACOB HE LOVED AND ESAU HE HATED”
WHAT PAUL IS DOING HERE IS MAGNIFYING THE SPLIT IN GENEAOLOGIES
HE IS BRINGING TO LIGHT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE PROMISE MADE BY THE SPIRIT AND THE WORKS OF THE FLESH
The Promise was made to Rebecca that the Oldest would serve the youngest
This was against the norm of their heritage
This was counter cultural
As we look at , we see that from the beginning their was a wrestling between Jacob and Esau
Genesis 25:22–23 NKJV
22 But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her: “Two nations are in your womb, Two peoples shall be separated from your body; One people shall be stronger than the other, And the older shall serve the younger.”
Genesis 25:
This was against the norm of their heritage
This was counter cultural
How it all went down still wrecks me
Esau went out to hunt and came home weary, thinking he was about to die
Meanwhile, Jacob was cooking a red stew
Upon asking Jacob for some
Jacob responded with “Sell me your birthright for this bowl of stew?”
Esau thought he was too weary to live on
And responds “I am about to die, what is this birthright to me?”
He swears, and so begins the reign of Jacob, the youngest, over Esau, the oldest
This decision followed Esau for the rest of his life.
Later on in their life, Isaac asks Esau to go hunt for him and prepare a meal for him, so that He would bless Esau.
This blessing was very different from the birthright.
It was focused on what God would do through him.

The birthright specifies property and wealth passed from one generation to the other—this has already been given to Jacob by Esau and such an action would be irrevocable by Isaac (25:27–34). The blessing focuses on future wealth and posterity—most profoundly seen in receiving Yahweh’s covenant blessings

THIS WHOLE SITUATION IS A GLIMPSE OF WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE NEGLECT GOD’S PROMISES
IF ISAAC WOULD HAVE REMEMBERED WHAT THE GOD OF THE UNIVERSE HAD SAID TO REBECCA WE WOULDN’T BE IN THIS PREDICAMENT
IF THEY HAD REMEMBERED WHAT GOD HAD SAID WHEN THEY WERE IN THE WOMB, THEIR WOULD BE NO NEED FOR STEALING OF A BIRTHRIGHT OR DECEIVING ONE ANOTHER.
AS REBECCA FOUND OUT WHAT ISAAC HAD REQUESTED
SHE QUICKLY GRABS JACOB AND TELLS HIM WHAT IS GOING ON, AND ASKS HIS TO GET THE INGREDIENTS NECESSARY IN ORDER FOR HIM TO ACT AS ESAU AND RECEIVE THE BLESSING.
ALL OF THIS DECEPTION
ALL OF THIS STRUGGLE
BECAUSE THE WORD OF GOD WAS NOT BELIEVED TO BE TRUE
BECAUSE THE PROMISE OF GOD WAS MADE OF NO EFFECT BY HUMANS.
YOU KNOW THE STORY,
ISAAC IS DECEIVED BY JACOB
JACOB RECEIVES THE BLESSING FROM ISAAC
THOUGH ESAU IS ALSO BLESSED BY ISAAC, IT WASN’T THE BLESSING ACCORDING TO THE COVENANT
SO ESAU SAID IN HIS HEART
Genesis 27:41 NKJV
41 So Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father blessed him, and Esau said in his heart, “The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”
IN HATING JACOB, HE INDIRECTLY DESPISED THE PLANS OF GOD
IN HATING JACOB, HE HATED THE WORD OF GOD
NOW, BACK TO OUR TEXT, PAUL QUOTES
Malachi 1:2–3 NKJV
2 “I have loved you,” says the Lord. “Yet you say, ‘In what way have You loved us?’ Was not Esau Jacob’s brother?” Says the Lord. “Yet Jacob I have loved; 3 But Esau I have hated, And laid waste his mountains and his heritage For the jackals of the wilderness.”
WE CAN SEE THIS TWO WAYS
GOD IS SPEAKING TO THE EDOMITE NATION
#1 DID GOD REALLY HATE ESAU
I believe that Paul is expressing the difference between election and rejection
IT’S KIND OF LIKE US AND OUR NEIGHBORS
When God elects one thing, the counter is the rejection of another
When God said, the older will serve the younger
When God said that Jacob would reign over Esau, and continue the promise made to Isaac
He is in turn rejecting Esau
#2 CONTEXTUALLY SPEAKING
Malachi is speaking to the Edomite Nation
A nation that served Israel at one point
That fought against Israel at another
And whom never was satisfied with their status.
ALL BECAUSE THE WORD OF GOD WAS MADE OF NO EFFECT BY HUMANITY
All because humanity chose not to believe the word of God
IT’S KIND OF LIKE US AND OUR NEIGHBORS
IT’S KIND OF LIKE US AND OUR NEIGHBORS
GOD SAYS LOVE YOUR NEIGHBORS
WHO IS OUR NEIGHBOR?
WHO IS OUR NEIGHBOR?
WE WONT EVEN SAY HI TO THEM SOMETIMES
WE DON’T
HOW ARE WE LOVING OUR NEIGHBORS?
ARE WE PROACTIVE IN THIS COMMAND?
Or does this word from God not apply to us because we are going to heaven
This is the problem with Chrsitianity
We are satisfied with our belief system, so much so, that we believe there is nothing else to do.
We are just like the Jews
Satisfied with a System
At the expense of a Relationship with the Lord
